Not to come white knight a dead artist but…That’s not a painting by Jackson Pollock, that’s a painting currently being sold for 265 dollars online by Jesse Milano. Jackson Pollock didn’t brag to critics at all, he was a struggling alcoholic of a reclusive nature and likely had bipolar disorder. He often used his art to express angst more than anything else as well as probably a coping mechanism.
The only people bragging Jackson and his work were his friends, commissioners and acquaintances. Critics weren’t too fond of him and he was mocked on several magazines. The peak of his career was in the 50s, a few years short of his death.
In 1951 he decided to use darker colours to express his anger and frustration, and NOBODY (literally no one) bought any of his works. He was forced to go back to his brighter colours in order to continue making money, but he fell deeper and deeper into alchoolicism because of the pressure that came with his popularity. He often expressed his frustration at the pressure that came with the demands from buyers. In 1956, at 44, Jackson died in a car accident because of his alcohol addiction.
His wife tried her best to keep his art alive after his death and was quite successful at it. Jackson’s works only began selling for millions in the 70s, long after his death.
While I despise pretentious assholes in the art industry, Jackson Pollock is not one of them. There are some paintings of him I consider aesthetically pleasing and some that I don’t, but he was undoubtedly passionate about his work, which he expressed himself through.
