Things that People Forget About When Writing Sword Fights
You donât have to dodge by a foot. You only have to dodge by an inch.
Not all swords are made the same way. You wouldnât fight with a katana the same way you would fight with a broadsword.
You donât need to aim for the heart or the head. Get the vein in wrist, and you could incapacitate that hand.
Small cuts matter. If youâre cut up enough, youâre going to start suffering from blood loss, and thatâll put you at a disadvantage.
The blade isnât the only thing that matters. There isnât some set of rules in sword fighting where you can only stick the stabby end into the other person. Hit them in the head with the hilt, and theyâll feel it.
If there are multiple attackers, you want to incapacitate or kill each one as quickly as possible. Endurance matters, especially when youâre not only swinging/stabbing/aiming something that is 2-5 lbs (ceremonial ones were a lot heavier, but wouldnât be generally fought with) but also taking/blocking heavy blows from at least one opponent.
You donât have to dodge
by a foot. You only have
to dodge by an inch.
Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
That final haiku actually makes for a pretty good maxim!
All the above.
Also, regarding the not-just-the-stabby-end advice: significant sections of the numerous medieval-and-newer swordfighting manuals now available in translation are devoted to the art of clobbering or otherwise messing up people with the hilt of your sword in numerous inventive ways. Many of these are potentially quite lethal, and mean you wonât have to waste time cleaning your blade.
âŚAlso feeling the need to mention a favorite move of my iaido master, back in the day: the one where you spear your [seated across from you] opponent in the gut with the hilt of your katana as youâre drawing it⌠then finish the draw and chop your opponentâs head off. The move is called âMutinyâ (donât ask me what it wouldâve been in Japanese; if he ever told us, I canât remember). But I canât tell you how many times Shihan made us practice that damn move. There was just something about it that appealed to him.
Anyway, generally speaking: if youâre going to write swordfights, you may not have the time, inclination or money to study the sword yourself, but you can at least read the fecking manuals. Theyâre easily found. Hereâs a link to one of the best-known ones, circa 1459.* These will break you quickly of the idea that medieval-period swordfighting was some kind of boring bash-clash-bash-clash operation.
âŚOh, and re the recommendation about not going for the heart or the head: This is definitely on the money. If I was in a swordfight and was in a rush to get it over with, the femoral artery would be my choice. Wait for your opponent to expose it (or get them to, usually by you stepping back out of range so they have to step forward, exposing any opportunities offered by their leg armor while itâs flexing). When they do, chop deep on the inside of the leg above the knee. Then get out of range again so your opponent doesnât fall over on top of you. Two minutes or so for them to go profoundly shocky: then five to seven minutes for them to bleed out. But regardless of the timings, since youâll likely have bisected one or more of their adductor muscles on that side, they definitely wonât be getting up to run after youâŚ
*Particularly directing your attention to the plates illustrating judicial divorce combat.
thinking about the dynamic between the self-made cynic and the bleeding heart
the self made cynic; created with bared teeth and bloodied knuckles. clawed their way out of hell and didnât come out quite human. every thing about them is a carefully constructed persona - you canât hurt someone who doesnât exist, and they will never be hurt again. faithless through and through. the only savior they believe in is themselves.
the bleeding heart, on the other hand is fundamentally incapable of being anything other than themself. they love the way an open wound does. itâs hemorrhagic and contagious. faithful to a fault. they will jump without hesistation, though theyâll hit the ground consumed with guilt.
THE CLOSED WOUND AND THE BLEEDING HEART

For those writing a story set in space...
...looking for good, informative and engaging resource material? Consider Chris Hadfield.
Chris Hadfield is a retired Canadian Astronaut, engineer and fighter pilot, who spent a total of 166 days in space. His method of teaching is sure to keep you up into the earliest hours of the morning.
Linked below are videos he's participated in:
Astronaut Chris Hadfield answers the Webâs most searched questions
Chris Hadfield reviews Space Movies, from âGravityâ to âInterstellarâ
Astronaut Chris Hadfield debunks space mythsÂ
What I learned from going blind in space | Chris Hadfield
Chris Hadfield on 13 Moments That Changed His Life
Chris Hadfieldâs Life Advice Will Leave You SPEECHLESS - One of the Most Eye Opening Speeches
And in this playlist (linked below) you can find videos he did while on the International Space Station, in which he demonstrates how gravity works onboard the ISS (and space in general).
An Astronautâs Guide To Life in Space (playlist)
Fun fact, he's also covered David Bowieâs song âSpace Oddity,â even going as far as recording a music video for the song, onboard the ISS! You can check out that video here.
On Masterclass, he's contributed with 28 videos (7+ hours of content) in which he teaches Space Exploration. Youâll learn everything there is to know about astronaut training, launching rockets, navigating a space shuttle, and spacewalking! DISCLAIMER: Masterclass is not free. This material you have to pay for.
Last but not least, in 2013 he released a book called An Astronautâs Guide to Life on Earth, which I also recommend.
Video transcript:
Person 1: Did you know that employees are quitting instead of giving up work from home?
Person 2: So, as someone who was not able to work from homeâum, Iâm in a manufacturing facility, I, thatâs not an option for me. Iâm in this bitch right now on a Saturday. So, really not an option.
But. I wanna be really clear that we support y'all. The people that can work from home fucking should. Cause itâs better for us too. Thereâs less traffic, parkingâs easier, uh, thereâs just, thereâs less stress in the whole world which benefits everybody.
People in this plant can work from home. And when they do, I can park outside easier. And I can still get up with them by calling their phones, emailing them or whatever.
This should be normal now. This should be normal. We were told it was the new normal and they tried to take us back. Fuck that shit. Work from if you can and quit if they wonât let you.

Strider did this to him too, wayyyyy back when. Just showed up there in Bree, smoking in the corner. Refused to leave or let the story go on without him.Â

Like wow you have no idea how conversation works but boy are you giving it your all - I will stand here and look mildly surprised the whole time and when youâre done Iâll say âreally?â And you will nod and look so victorious.
no no thatâs a bop, i love it
âWoman!â cried I, somewhat tearsome,
âWho are you to stand so fearsome
With your wavy locks of auburn hair and eyes of emerald green?â
Quoth the woman, âIâm Joleneâ
stop using hospitals as horror settings
fun alternative: cruise ships. cruise ships exploit workers and can pollute as much as a million cars on a daily basis while dumping endless shit into the ocean and endangering all passengers on board because the on board air quality rivals some of the most polluted cities in the world while being a breeding ground for disease. cruise ships deserve to have negativity associated with them
also all crimes commited aboard a cruise ship is under the juristiction of whichever country theyâre registered to once theyâre a certain distance away from land so you have the added bonus of the crimes being very unlikely to be properly investigated (due to usually being physically so very far from the actual police whose juristiction theyâre under)
terrifying!
On top of THAT cruise ships tend to have their own morgue, as people tend to die on ships all the time. Good for those spooky scenes.
plus u can just likeâŚleave a hospital. good luck escaping a killer or a monster or a curse or w/e in the middle of the fucking ocean
As an ex cruise ship employee, let me give you some stuff to work with!
Water tight doors! You get a special training video on interacting with these correctly because they will literally cut you in half if you try and go through them while theyâre closing!
Freezer vaults for food in the sub decks - you can only get into these with the correct code and they have very thick walls. Good luck if you get shut in one of these just after the last round of checks bucko
There are cameras everywhereâŚexcept in the crew cabin corridors. Also there are no windows down there because unless youâre an officer, you live below the waterline. Day and night have no meaning because everything is in the same slightly unsettling yellow light.
Donât piss off the guys who deal with the rubbish. They have machines down there that can crush metal barrels
As well as morgues, cruise ships usually have one basic operating theatre with all the attendant horrifying equipment in it
One cigarette thrown carelessly in the wrong place WILL start a fire that will gut half the ship.
When weâre pitching side to side, the anchor swings out and then back in, striking the metal outer shell with a noise that shakes half the ship
People disappear overboard more often than youâd really want to be a thing
A lot of cruise ships now have theatres on board (usually towards the front) with all the potential for dark corners, creepy costumes and electrical calamities you could want.
And as op says, you canât really escape a ship in the middle of the ocean. Particularly during a storm, as then you canât even evacuate to lifeboats unless the whole ship is going down. On the upside being on board during a storm means most guests hide in their cabins and the staff walk around like drunks, which would likely throw off a skilled murdererâs plans.
Takes notes
You also have the bonus of a corporate overlord who doesnât give a shit about anything but profits and can be reliably counted on to downplay any disaster in an attempt to avoid publicity.

In every story I write I want there to be a multitude of accents. Different countries and cultures would have different accemts anyway, I don't want them all to sound British. I want Icelandic elves chatting casually about the weather with dwarves who sound like they're from Canada. I want Scottish humans haggling with German halflings. I want utter chaos in marketplaces as people walk through a cacaphony of accents.
More favourite tropes:
âUnfortunately, [thing that would ordinarily be described in much stronger terms than âunfortunateâ].â Â
âFortunately, [thing that is in no way fortunate].â Â
âUnfortunately, [thing that would be fortunate in nearly any circumstance except the particular circumstance at hand].â Â
âFortunately, [very minor benefit that absolutely does not offset the considerable drawbacks of whatever just happened].â Â
âUnfortunately, [the exact, word-for-word thing that somebody just expressed that they hope wonât happen].â Â
âFortunately, [complete non sequitur].â
