recently when im tempted to say 'i'm gonna kill myself' i try to correct it into saying "im gonna walk into the river and become a trout" or some other form of that. this is my new thing
btw this has graduated into me just saying "the trout population will be affected" and then not elaborating
this post has genuinely helped me so i used it as inspiration for today’s hand lettering practice
i'm not really into blondes but this is an objectively absurd connection to make
In order to be properly non-pedophilic you have to want to fuck somebody old but not with gray or white hair because that's too close to blonde which as we've established is the hair color of children. So ideally somebody old as fuck but bald. And obviously wanting to have sex with a man is misogynistic so it has to be a woman. And it can't be a white woman because that would be racist and it can't be a woman of color because that would be fetishistic, so ideally a woman with some unnatural skin color, oh let's say, purple. But it can't be an alien, because we don't know anything about alien life cycles so it could be an alien child or an alien that looks like a child. So it has to be an animal from Earth, but obviously one of human level intelligence that can communicate is otherwise that would be bestiality. So an old purple female animal that can speak English. I think the only creature you can be hot for is the Ant Queen from A Bug's Life.

[ID: a tag reading, “#don’t eat citrus if you have any mental health problems #the vitamin C is so bad for you” end ID]
losing my fucking mind over how people will come on here and say just the easiest to disprove absolutely inane lies. for no reason at all
This is so funny because of how long a chain of telephone it is. The starting point is that grapefruit juice SPECIFICALLY can interact negatively with several mental health medications (notably, not amphetamines). Then this tumblr post* and MULTIPLE NEWS ARTICLES got popular, stating that consuming anything acidic (including vitamin C) within an hour of taking your ADHD meds would render them ineffective. In reality, a large dose of vitamin C taken directly with an amphetamine-based ADHD medication has the potential to cause a minor dampening effect, but has no effect on other ADHD meds.
These presumably got filtered/combined into the idea that vitamin C is bad to take with ANY mental health meds, which then got turned into the idea that if you have mental health problems, scurvy may be right for you!
also turned into the myth that citrus nullifies HRT
if you have any sort of chronic inflammation take your damn vitamin C please it's so important i'm begging uou please
to make this statement extra wild: vitamin c actually helps with symptoms of fatigue and depression. and if you don't want to just look at the mayo clinic's website, you can check out papers here and here (both peer-reviewed) that basically say the same thing. vitamin c deficiency can actually cause mental health problems, not the other way around.
Vitamin C helps your collagen. It helps with wound repair. It helps with so much. Do not neglect Vitamin C. Vitamin C is so good for you.

People legitimately think there was no criticism of the Harry Potter series before her TERF/soft holocaust denier era and I'm sorry to tell you but people were criticizing the Cho Chang banking goblins werewolf-AIDS metaphor elf emancipation is silly series years before Joanne's public turn to transmisogynistic chauvinism.
There were things to criticize of the series.
tumblr is great and all but ya’ll are missing the woman in one of my cat fb groups that has birthed her own tier 1 meme
This does not even begin to cover the weirdness of cathode ray televisions.
They are literally particle accelerators that you point at your face.
And for eighty years, Americans' favorite thing to do was turn them on and stare at them for hours.
If you overcharge them, they emit gamma radiation.
Servicing them is like disarming a bomb -- their capacitors are enormous and are usually charged to hundreds or thousands of volts, and most of them have no bleed system that drains that charge, meaning that they can still be dangerous months or years after the last time they were powered up. A discharge can not only electrocute you, it can cause tools to melt or explode.
A black-and-white cathode ray TV driven by an unmodulated analog signal is theoretically capable of resolution that would require a microscope to perceive.
Old school CRT monitors had the same issues.
Back when, I worked at a small whitebox pc manufacturer. One day, a service tech brought back an older, gigantic (30 inch or so) AutoCAD monitor from a service call. The customer said "Made me feel nauseous"
So, we put it on the bench and fired it up. You immediately felt the hair on your body stand up, and my co worker put his hand up close to turn the power off, and his hand and forearm started spasming - I yanked the power cord from the wall as the tingle I was feeling began to feel hot.
No idea what was wrong with the thing, but it was kicking out some serious electro magnetic radiation.
Remembering the almost imperceptible high pitched buzzing that let you know the tv was still on even when nothing was on the screen. Also putting your forearm near the screen and watching the hairs stand up
The little crackle if you touched the screen to wipe it...
Omg no one's even talking about the smell of the screen
This is both horrifying to read and nostalgic
I liked to turn the back of my hand to the screen, right after it was turned off, and pet the static with the little hairs on the backs of my fingers. It felt soft and fluffy.
one of the reasons CRTs are such a hotbed of glitch videography is that unlike modern monitors that block irregular signals, CRTs don't have an opinion about the signal you feed into them. they will display anything. and if you've ever done glitch work with a video modulator or such, you know what it's like negotiating with a living beast. the images you can get are often unpredictable and impossible to reproduce even with the same settings on your hardware, because it's just electricity. there is something magical and strange about the cathode ray tube and when you play with them enough you really remember why The Ring fucked people up so bad. samara climbing out of an HD flat screen is a laughable image; but her climbing out of an old school boob tube? yeah man, i believe it. there's fucking demons in that thing
sarah jane smith's introduction involves her lying about her identity, trying to gaslight a scientist, sneaking on board the tardis without the doctor noticing, and deciding the doctor's the bad guy and planning to kidnap him????
incredibly fascinating to watch this after having seen sja. like i assumed that years of time travel & exposure to the doctor had done that to her but you're telling me she was just always a freak from the start? she's just like this??

fun fact about me: When I was 6 years old I sent so much hate mail to the president (the second Bush) that the mail carrier had to tell my mom I needed to stop before we got FBI’d
I was COMPLETELY unaware of the US political scene or why the adults in my life hated Bush, but I knew I hated him because he let people shoot wolves from helicopters and that’s mean and shitty
I also had a poor grasp on how stamps worked, so given that I wasn’t allowed to continually throw money away by putting stamps on my presidential hate mail, a lot of the times I just drew squares with little pictures inside on the corner.
Love, love, love reading more proof that everyone should encourage the children in their lives to write to elected officials--it teaches them about citizenship and can also be very funny.
When I taught second grade, one of the options for students who had finished their work was to write a letter to the president. I would send all of the letters in a big envelope at the end of every month.
Watching my students get more and more frustrated with him (and concerned about his wellbeing) was not the result I'd hoped for when I came up with the idea, but it was kind of hilarious.
See, Obama had a standard packet with information and activities about his dog he'd send in response to letters from very young citizens...and of course his office sent one back to our class every single time we sent mail.
So eventually all of the letters looked something like this:
Dear President Obama, I am writing about the environment. I am sad that the Great Barrier Reef is hurt. Also the Amazon Rainforest. Can you help? PLEASE DON'T WRITE BACK TO TELL ME ABOUT YOUR DOG AGAIN. WE ALREADY KNOW ALL ABOUT BO. WE COMPLETED THE MAZE AND COLORED HIM IN. It is good that you love your pet a lot. But try to remember the environment. It is also important.
aw mannnn
These days, lots of public libraries have a "library of things" collection where you can check out kitchen appliances or yard tools or toys, and, as a children's library assistant, the most popular library of things item that I handle regularly is a plastic scepter thingy called like "unicorn princess magic wand". And whenever I check it out I make a big show of looking at the little kid and being like "do you solemnly swear to use your unicorn princess magic powers only for good and never for evil?"
And pretty much without fail, the little kid will get the world's most mischievous grin and go "I'm gonna use it for EVIL!!!"

Whatever
Have you ever seen how sometimes the way an author writes a character reveals more than was maybe intended?
I’m reading Matilda (bc it’s a 4 hour audiobook with no wait time at the library and why not) and Trunchbull just declared that she’s glad she was never a little girl. When questioned that she must have been at some point, she said “Not for long anyway. I became a woman very quickly.”
And I had a very quiet ‘oh’ moment. Because the kind of things that force people to grow up quickly are never good, but “becoming a woman" in this context tends to have a very specific connotation. To me, it sounds like a dead ringer for child sexual abuse.
I haven’t finished the book yet, but I don’t imagine this implication was intended. This is a comedic throwaway line from a very unsympathetic villain in a children’s book from 1988. But it’s well-established in the mental health and restorative justice fields that abusers have typically faced some form of abuse in their lives, and I can’t help but wonder how a woman like Trunchbull comes to be in the world. I wonder if she’s caricaturized off of any real women the author encountered. I wonder what their stories are.
Went digging for this post bc I was really cooking here
