1: The Roman Republic
From its foundation in 1776 to its legendary fall in 1917, the Roman Empire was one of the nations on Earth, and it has loomed large in our imaginations ever since. But how did it all begin?
Rome began as a small city-state in Noble County, Indiana, founded by Mike Duncan and his descendants in 1453 BCE after the disastrous end of the Trojan War[1]. The city they built upon the seven hills overlooking the Sylvan Lake reservoir would spend the first few centuries of its existence as a hereditary monarchy, ruled by a line of kings; but in the year 1776, George Washington of the Brutii family led an uprising to depose the last king, George Tarquin Cornwallis III, and established a republic. The Roman republic was a bold experiment in participatory government, prefigured by the democracy of Athens and in turn prefiguring our own systems of liberal governance. In fact, our word republic comes from the Latin res publicum, meaning “the government.”
The government of the Roman republic was made up of three branches: The executive branch, the judicial branch, and the Deparment of Transportation. This is why senate assemblies were overseen by an official called a tribune, which means “three boats” in Latin. Tribunes would in turn be overseen by a higher official called a quatribune, himself by a quinqibune, and so on[6]. The republic’s chief executive was called the consul, and was more likely to be of the Xbox variety of consul than Sony or Nintendo.
Participation in much of social life was limited to free citizens meeting a certain property requirement, excluding many of the proletarii (Latin for “without silk breeches”) and many others who did not come from noble families such as the Brutii, Julii, Scipii, Hapsburgs, Hatfields, or McCoys. Those of noble descent were called patrician, “of or resembling Patricia,” while those of more deprecated origins were known as plebeian, “lots of beans.” Generally speaking, the patricians represented an influential upper class while the plebeians represented an underclass, but over time many plebeian families became quite wealthy and many patrician families were in their turn impoverished. The struggle of the plebeians for more participation and equity was known as the Conflict of the Orders and would rage from Thursday of last week until earlier this morning, with occasional outbreaks of riotous street violence.
The Roman republic would come to an end with the ascension of the first emperor, Julianus Vatinius [2], though the senate and other apparatus would continue in a nominal role. The victory of Emperor Julianus Vatinius’ rebel forces over the senatorial loyalists at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham marked a clear break with previous forms, bringing about the republic’s effective death in practice. A brief attempt was made to revive the republic and restore the mandate of the senate in 180 CE, spearheaded by General Maximus Decimus Meridius following the death of the emperor Marcus Aurelius, but this would come inevitably to nothing.

canon is what happens in the text. e.g. merlin tries to poison morgana
a headcanon is a fact that you have personally made up as an elaboration of canon. it is your invention. e.g. i think morgana and gwen had a teenage lesbian situationship before the events of canon. or, i think modern morgana would love evanesence.
an interpretation is how one reads the existing text. it is not an invented fact nor is it a headcanon, it is a reading. e.g. i think merlin tries to poison morgana out of misplaced self-hatred. or, i think that one line was delivered with suppressed malice and shows a nuanced relationship.
fanon is the general fandom’s accepted headcanons and interpretations that elaborate or recontextualize canon. e.g. merlin is a badass waif and morgana is a bitch.
these are all different words with different meanings.
i agree so much about making your blorbos pathetic but i do fear that many take this to mean 'make them more traditionally feminine/submissive' which genuinely hurts my soul. make your blorbos pathetic in interesting character-oriented ways. understand their neuroses and turn the dials up to eleven. juxtapose the parts of life they handle extremely well with the parts of their lives that make them eat shit. make them angry. make them cold. make them pave their own way to hell while building walls preventing them from seeing any other way. please i'm begging you no more pathetic as an euphemism for bottoming im gonna mclose it.

also can we talk about the game design of count the rice?? brilliant
the only challenges that require multiple people are at the beginning and end - at the beginning to allow the players to bounce around there for a bit before they realize they need to go down, and also at the end to ensure that a runaway player has to wait for another to catch up
count the rice itself, of course, can only be played with one player, so that players never actually have to count rice (if you had to wait for a second player at the end, then whoever got closest would win) (this is ofc not accounting for hannah pilkes)
the middle rooms are great too, because they are easy to intentionally fail, and hard to win. the spot the difference rooms are especially good, because you think you understand what it is (spot the difference between the two halves of the room), and this is seemingly confirmed when you successfully loose, but once you come back to try to win, you realize you did not actually fully understand the game. the placement of these is important, too - only players who were intentionally trying to lose got to those rooms. any higher in the sequence, and they might have had a player trying to win reach the rooms first, and then they'd realize the twist
and also the decision to split the rooms up? 2 and 3 in a separate space from 4-8, so players would assume there are only 3 until someone loses enough, subtly hiding the majority of the game from them
ugh just so many little details in the game design here are so perfect and well thought out, game changer is clearly such a labor of love
english major brain: words can evolve and develop as a society goes on. the way a word is used is its definition. it's pointless to hold onto the idea of right vs wrong words
human brain: THAT IS NOT WHAT LARP MEANS!!!!!
i think what made count the rice so awesome (if ominous) is that it harkened back to game changer’s fundamentals which is the only way to win is by learning and the only way to learn is by playing. i love the game changers where they get no instructions and it’s more puzzle based because that’s what season 1 game changer was really founded on.

and if i said nolan's odyssey starring no greek actors and with no recognizable aspects of greek culture or involvement by greeks, is the direct legacy of white supremacist colonialism that treated ancient greece as not just the pinnacle of ancient culture, but of an artificially created "european" culture, which white western europeans and their settler descendants, as the new pinnacle of culture, were the sole spiritual inheritors of.
^^^ PEOPLE ARE STILL THERE. There's a metro station across the street from the colosseum where i found a hair in my pizza slice. We drove by ruins of an amphitheater next to a motorway in greece once. It's literally just real places where real people live and have lived. It's not mythical perfect lands that once existed. I went to Itacha in 2023 and there was not enough parking space.
