hey if you're not a mobility aid user, and you want a simple way to make public spaces more accessible to those of us who are, i have a tip for you:
push in your chairs when you get up from tables.
when people don't push in their chairs, people with bulky aids like wheelchairs and rollators can't get through. also a lot of people who use canes have wider gaits than able bodied people, and having a chair in the middle of their walking path is a real obstruction. while some of us are able to push chairs out of our way, a lot of us are not, and wind up boxed in/out because somebody didn't push in their chair.
so if you want to do something simple that can make a big difference in terms of like. navigating an outdoor food court or a cafe or what have you. push in your chairs.

In the era of corporate sanitization never forget it was leather daddies and S&M folks who protected some of the earliest pride parades.
Three years after that last comment and the corporate backers are fleeing as the moment the political tide turned - the kinksters aren’t.
I would actually go as far as to say that MOST abuse is unintentional. I think most people will go through their lives without ever experiencing intentional abuse. People are abusive because they're selfish, because they're stressed, because they care more about what society thinks they should do than the impacts of their actions on their children and partners, because they think what they're doing is correct, because they've made it make sense in their own heads, because they think they can fix their victims, they think they can fix their relationships, they think they can stop you from leaving, they think they can make you a better partner to them, they think that means you need to do what they want. We've sort of constructed mental illness in a way that doing this shit to other people counts as a form of mental illness because it is anti social behavior in the literal sense— it is behavior that causes social harm.
I don't say any of this to excuse it. I think everyone needs to be more aware of this because if you think abuse has to be intentional you will never realize you are capable of abusive behavior. You will never realize you are being shitty to the people you love, because YOU know what you mean, YOU know you don't mean any harm. But you're doing harm. You need to pay attention to the impact you have on other people, and you need to do it all the time, Especially when you feel least capable of doing so. Sorry! You live in a society. Get your head out of your ass.
THE CHAFF PROJECT
Hi! Are you cis in the UK and you'd like to support trans rights? Great!
How: buy a trans flag pin and wear it in public.
Why: chaff is an overwhelming amount of false positives so that when a missile gets close to the plane, it hits the chaff and not the plane.
In practice: the goal is to make it DIFFICULT to identify trans people to target with bathroom bans, and to create many FALSE POSITIVES for businesses.
Basically, you might get accused of being trans and kicked out, because of the badge. You say: I wear the badge because trans rights matter.
You follow up with a letter to the business saying you're fucking furious because some nosy dipshit just tried to play fucking genital police with you in the loos. You know lots of trans people (don't name any, if you do) and you wear the pin in support and you're disgusted at them for allowing this.
Blame the business for allowing the behaviour.
Businesses see that their cis customers are getting bothered over a badge and may clarify trans-inclusive policies, so they can kick out the bathroom botherers instead of nice cis allies.
You only need to buy and wear the badge, and you are protecting trans people. You can be genuinely heroic. Even one cis person doing this helps, and everyone you get to join in helps even more.

Okay so I wanted very quickly to discuss this set of lovely tags from a lovely person:
An "I'll go with you" tag does a wonderful job of signalling that you are a safe ally to trans people and it makes a trans person feel safer to use the loo or the other appropriate sex-segregated facilities wherever you are, and that is not nothing. Even if nobody asked this wonderful person to accompany them directly, I guarantee many people have felt safer going alone for seeing it.
That said- it does not work as chaff if the most restrictive laws are in place, because it clearly positions you as an ally and not as a trans person; it's in that category of badges like "maybe I'm trans" or "proud ally" where it signals to trans people that you are a safe cis person (this is a wonderful thing to signal) but it does not give anyone the impression that you might yourself be trans, and if you want to be chaff that's what you need to do.
Now being chaff is a Deliberate Political Liberation Action! It has risks and it can get you into good trouble, which when you're in it will just feel like trouble. Wearing a visible ally badge boosts visible acceptance of trans people and it's huge, it helps shift the culture, and I love it and I love you for doing it; it's just not functional chaff, and that's okay. ❤️

my notifications are once again devolving into a spirited debate about the ethics of actions that could potentially make someone uncomfortable, and at risk of sounding like someone about to get a lot of irate anons I think we're frankly giving way too to much moral weight to hypothetical discomfort
the thing about discomfort is that it's an extremely nebulous category that can be triggered by virtually anything and that's far too broad a category to have any inherent moral quality to it. like. my mom was mad uncomfortable when I stopped shaving. that didn't mean I was doing violence against my mom it just meant she needed to get over herself. many such cases it must be said.
there's not a single example I could give that's better than this
anyway rn my notes are full of a lot of "you should never try too hard to befriend people because you might make them uncomfortable" and "you should never tell people you're attracted to them because you might make them uncomfortable" and I guess I'm just wondering why we're acting like a little social awkwardness is the worst thing that could happen to a person
So I actually started running some Monsterhearts (the "oneshot" is becoming a short campaign because it turns out that there's no time to advance _plot_ when everyone is doing social drama, who could have foreseen this) and God, it has actually been kinda invigorating. Actually finding my footing with this GMing thing and getting a rush when my players finish a session all abuzz with delight at how everything panned out.
It's definitely doing a lot to build confidence! I think I can see where my weaknesses are, like struggling with "embodying" NPCs and that, but I have played to mitigate them by going for a very player-led game. Plus, enough investment in certain NPCs has now been built up that the horror movie of it all can start feeling more pressing, and that's when the PCs aren't mauling them themselves. 🥰

and while we’re at it, fuck this idea that ONE ACCOUNT has to belong uniquely to ONE PERSON. This is the same thing these silicon valley fucks want; their vision of the future where everyone has a unique biometric ID code implanted in their body is the ultimate extension of Netflix’s “no password sharing” policy. You want to use your friend’s car? Sorry, you can’t, you need to be an authorized user. Your mother wants to let you look something up on her OED account? Too bad! That’s only for her! The concept of perfect market efficiency gives them greedy little money bag eyes.
If I pay money to have a newspaper sent to my house, they don’t charge me extra when I show it to my dad. This password sharing thing isn’t just a Netflix problem; don’t be surprised if it shows up elsewhere in other forms. Stamp this idea out now or we’ll be stuck with it.
