Been having a lot of thoughts about Peter Burke's oh-so-briefly touched on minor league baseball backstory. I feel like in the vast majority of cases, when a character is forced to make a choice between pursuing what they love at a high personal cost or abandoning it, we are told that a life lived following your passions is worth every cost- that there is a right path to take here and it's the one where you slowly destroy yourself. The fact that Peter Burke DOES abandon that particular passion and we don't even learn about it until 3 seasons in, when he is already firmly established as a character who HAS a fulfilling passion and fulfilling relationships, who has been living a personally meaningful life all this time and can look at what he chose to give up as a different chapter of his life that was no more or less meaningful, is remarkable. I think it's a worthwhile and kind of rare message: there isn't ONE thing worth living for! If you leave one passion you can find others!
In my opinion it also serves to highlight an important difference between him and Neal- that Peter is NOT the type to destroy himself for love and Neal IS. This is in that part of season 3 where anything and everything is being used as a metaphor for the choice between staying and leaving that Neal is faced with (up to and including gay marriage but that's a different post haha), and it's like. Well. Well Neal is destroying himself for love RIGHT NOW. He's living this life where he has no freedom and no privacy because it's the most meaningful thing he's ever had and he's trying desperately to convince himself he can keep it up forever. The narrative is impressively morally neutral on the matter- neither man is right or wrong, and they have good reasons for thinking what they do. (Why might Peter believe more chances will come along while Neal thinks he only ever gets one shot? What in their upbringings gave them such different levels of perceived stability)? It's just a rather tragic difference between the two. And all packed into 5 minutes at the end of the fucking baseball heist episode
Crying because Neal Caffrey isn’t a runner. He doesn’t actually want to run. He wants to be chased. He wants to be seen, preferably by one Peter Burke.
The cons alone are not enough for Neal. Sure he enjoys them, gets a rush off a particularly complex one, but mostly he wants to be noticed. He wants to impress, leave a mark like the artists he admires so much.
Neal was raised in witsec for the great majority of his childhood. He was raised to vanish in a crowd, pass as unremarkable and unmemorable. Never leave an impression. So naturally, when he left he started doing everything he could to prove that he was alive. He existed. He was here. He mattered. Any attention is good attention to him (similar to a toddler).
Then Peter shows up and notices him. And then Peter stays. He chases Neal for years and no one has ever made Neal feel more alive or more known. That feeling is addicting. Neal doesn’t want to run. He wants Peter to chase him. He wants Peter to keep pushing him and teasing him and seeing him and wanting him. Peter loves that Neal Caffrey (specifically) is in the world and no one has ever wanted that before.

The beginning of season 4 is really funny from Collins perspective. Like ok you're a ruthless bounty hunter type tasked with retrieving a recently escaped convicted conman. So far it's Tuesday. You ask the last FBI agent who caught said conman (twice!) what you need to know about him. He refuses to tell you anything useful but gets a far away look in his eye when talking about him. You've never been homophobic before but you think it might be time to start. Ok whatever you pursue your conman to the remote island where he's hiding out. The agent gets put on leave and follows you there?? He's underfoot every time you turn around and some of the shit he's pulling to protect this guy is definitely illegal, not that you're one to talk, it's just weird. You're not really sure what's going on between him and the conman but they're invested in one another to a kind of unhinged degree. You learn they've only been apart for six weeks. You're definitely considering the merits of homophobia. THEN they make the arrest of a lifetime and offer to frame it as YOUR WORK!! You say to the agent ok you probably want shared credit huh. He says no I want to be handcuffed to my favorite criminal again. You ask the favorite criminal if he wants like his freedom or something in exchange for this he says no I want to be handcuffed to my favorite cop again. You realize they're serious. You realize you hate them. You take the offer.
I believe there are two morals to white collar. 1) if you’re too good of a liar no one will trust you, and 2) if you never trust someone they’ll have no reason to be truthful.

peter and neal are so insane abt each other what the hell. peter keeps a photo of neal (and yeah okay the whole team but neal front and center) in his bedroom. neal sees it while breaking into peter's house because peter is (correctly) suspicious of neal having stolen a billion dollar treasure and it makes neal so emotional he pretends he didn't find what he was looking for because the thought of running away and leaving peter behind hurts more than the idea of never being truly free again. neal has a quiet breakdown in peter's bedroom while staring at a photo of peter and Elizabeth. peter is so psychically linked with neal that he senses the emotional torment and calls neal to ask if he can do anything for him and if he's doing okay after his recent breakup. they're insane.
