Someone wrote that my stuff looks serious but is silly 80% percent of the time and I laughed but now I'm slighty nervous about posting too much silly stuff.

the thing abt luthien and what makes her especially sexy is that she rejects the terms and conditions, the existing calculus of elvish politics - the premise that men should be vassals, seen but not heard, used but never treated as equals; that the high elves are superior to men & that marriage to a noldor prince would reinforce their political power; that a woman might have the right to choose over her father's right to choose for her - and instead makes a series of choices entirely on her own terms, with a vision of a world "order" that flies in the face of accepted elvish wisdom. self-interested choices, yes, and compelled by "love", but very much so political ones - embracing beren as an equal, as someone worth risking exile over, as someone worth dying for, in a reversal of what is assumed the correct hierarchy of men dying for their feudal elvish lords. this is what, i think, eventually propels her to take on sauron and morgoth and reject the inevitability of defeat that pervades the elves elsewhere - and then eventually even to refuse the shape of fate itself in accepting beren's death.
ofc bc tolkien has his thumb on the scale, her actions ultimately adhere to the ur-fate of the world i.e. eru iluvatar's design for men to lead and elves to heal and make way for them; therefore her actions are allowed to succeed. however, its worth assessing how much luthien's actions and insistences - including her ultimate rejection of doriath, which is not unfounded considering doriath represents an old and hierarchical order whose only concession to not killing her for "unruly" desire was to lock her up where she could still see starlight - would have appeared in the light of heresy; therefore, also, how much her actions are desperately recouped and smoothed away, to subsume her back into this defanged heroine of the epics, who only acts on innocent love, who operates solely by the rules of fate.
