thinking about it more, I just have a difficult time imagining durin to comfortably wear wanderer's hat, so here is my wanderer hat theory: (courtesy of durin's horns)

two possibilities:

wanderer makes the alterations permanently to his regular hat, justifying it by saying it helps with hat hair circulation

or he has two hats that he cycles between (one durin approved, and the other not durin approved) and switches them out depending on if durin is travelling with him.
