Thinking of the larger context of LOTR and like, the fellowship swapping old war stories and shit and Sam just says βYeah I killed a huge spiderβ¦Shelob, I think?β
And Gandalf just blinks and is like, βYou what now?β
βYeah, killed it. Had to save Frodoβ
Gandalf elects not to tell Sam that he killed the spawn of a primordial demon.
the daughter of the embodiment of darkness which ate the original sun and moon and almost ate the devil.
That's not important. What is important is that it was a danger to Mister Frodo.
Time for me to info dump about Sam and Shelob.
In lord of the rings lore, there are three tiers of deities. The highest tier and most dangerous includes Morgoth - Sauronβs master, and Ungoliant, Shelobβs master. The middle tier includes Shelob, Sauron. Then thereβs the lowest tier, which includes the wizards Gandalf and Saruman as well as the Balrog (this is why Gandalf couldnβt 1v1 the Balrog). It also explains why Gandalf doesnβt take the ring, the magic of a tier 2 deity would absolutely corrupt him. We even see that happen with Saruman and the Palantir.
This leads to the start of the answer to some interesting questions. Why does Sauron tolerate Shelob being in his territory, and why does Sauron tolerate there being a secret back door into Mordor?
On the surface, he does it because he might not be able to beat Shelob in a fight, after all theyβre the same tier of deity. And since Shelobβs domain is the secret way into Mordor, he canβt close it off, and he seriously doubts anyone can use it to get in. He doesnβt monitor the path with guards either - Shelob would eat them.
It gets more detailed than that though. Sauronβs boss, Morgoth, and Shelobβs boss, Ungoliant, made a deal. Theyβd attack the tree of life together. Morgoth would drink the nectar, and Ungoliant would keep all of the jewels and magic they earned along the way. Morgoth broke this deal because there was a particularly powerful gem he wanted (the gem in Sauronβs helmet), and as a result Ungoliant went to war with Morgoth.
Ungoliant won, Morgoth barely escaped with his life.
So not only does Sauron maybe lose if he attacks Shelob. Even if he were to win, it might provoke Ungoliant into attacking Morgoth again, and Ungoliant wins that fight, sheβs already done it once.
With all of that established, how the hell does Sam hurt a deity that powerful?
Well, to start, itβs impossible. Shelobβs hide is so tough Sam could never pierce it with all his might. However, Shelob had grown old and arrogant. During the fight, Sam winds up directly underneath Shelob, and Shelob decides to crush Sam with all her strength.
Unfortunately, Sam is pointing sting straight up.
While Sam lacks the strength to hurt Shelob, Shelob herself is plenty strong. She accidentally impales herself on sting, finding herself injured for the first time in thousands of years. Which is the sort of poetry I really appreciate about Tolkienβs writing.
No matter how powerful or evil or ancient or indestructible your foe, if you stand for what is right and hold your sword out, they will impale themselves upon it.
Samβs backstory in this scene is much simpler. He has to save Frodo.
I love it when tolkien fans reblog posts with the deep lore receipts. Thank you
I'm an adult
You're a dumbass who the fuck says something like that
a few months ago my friend called me and told me she was moving back up near me from 7 hours south in the middle of nowhere and asked if i would help her because she couldnβt move the furniture by herself and the town was so small there was no moving company (there were actually only 5 or six businesses in the whole town including both restaurants) and she had no one else down there to ask.Β
And even though money is pretty tight for her, she told me I could name my price if I would help her, because it was so far away.
I told her she was a dummy for thinking i would take her money but that i would accept the traditional helping-a-friend-move price: a meal (i know she would feel wrong about herself if she didnβt do something for me in return, thatβs just how she is) Tradition suggests pizza and beer, we opted for enchiladas and a margarita.
we crashed on the floor of the empty place and left back north in the morning - when we got back to the city three more friends met us at her storage place (the place she was moving into wouldnβt be vacant for a couple months) and we started to move all her stuff up to a storage room on the THIRD FLOOR (because large city storage places be like that)
we had just taken the first box out of the truck when the (only) lady working there walked by and told us they closed in an hour and twenty minutes, and she couldnβt stay even a little late because she had to get to her other job.
One hour twenty minutes. To completely un-jenga a large uhaul and re-tetris it back into a similar sized room on the third floor.
We all just, shared a look, took off hoodies, and got the fuck down to business.Β
It was actually.. I still cherish look we passed around. The tiny eyebrow quirks and chin nods. The eye glints. The bigger breath we each took as we prepared to kick it up several gears. That moment of wordless connection, when we all just silently agreed that we were damn well going to do the impossible and didnβt even waste the time it would take to say anything, just got to it.
And we did it too. Finished with exactly two full minutes to spare. And then we all went for dinner and drinks to celebrate. And my friendβs friends that came to help? Two of them were acquaintances/friends of mine already. Like I lived with one for a year a decade ago sort of thing. But this experience? Brought us all closer. Made myself a new friend too.
And the friend i helped move? She and I are closer than ever because of it.
When i left our storage success diner to go home, she asked me again if I was sure i wouldnβt take any money.
I saidΒ βI ever tell you when I was 22 I went down to Hollywood to try that scene out? Anyway ten months later, when I just couldnβt do it anymore, and needed to come back, I called one of my best friends and said i canβt do this anymore i need to come back. You know what he said? He said: Iβll be there tomorrow. Not how much will you pay me, not what do i get out of it, not will you be able to cover my gas, just: Iβll be there tomorrow. Okay? Youβre my friend. If you need help, Iβm going to be thereβ
If helping someone move ruins your friendship, youβre doing at least one of those two things very wrong.
Reblogging for the last line
I'm very adult, and I will always help a friend move.
Finally watched the Addams Family Values recently! and honestly. my main takeaway is
Debbie slays. And Joan Cusack is a QUEEN
Joan Cusack has never appeared in a film that she did not steal.
And as for Debbie, I will always repost my stance on her end.
Iβve said it a million times - if Debbie had listened to what the Addamses were saying in response to her tales of woe, sheβs have realized that they understood completely. She had found her people, and was too wrapped up in herself to realize it.
If they could have, theyβd have burst from their bonds, hugged the stuffing out of her, bought her a Bentley (and a vintage Ballerina Barbie) and declare her an Addams.
She could spend the rest of her life trying to kill Fester, and heβd love her all the more every time she tried. And the rest would keep offering helpful suggestions. βNo point in trying poison, Debbie my dear - heβs been putting strychnine on his cornflakes since was sevenβ.
they would have been such good friends

ik itβs late af and not many ppl are on,,,, but i got my bookmarks in and im OBSESSED π look how pretty they turned out π₯Ήπ₯Ήπ₯Ή
not only that but it's a really well maintained flat dirt road. My power wheelchair could take that road.
For the record, this road looks nicer and better maintained than the road that my parents' house is on.
Hey, it's been a hot minute. I've not done a lot the last couple months, but I do have a Killua and a Mr. Handy for you.

Yeah, trains are pretty much the most efficient transit system known to man and it is maddening that we chose other methods at any chance
it was racism!! it was good ole american racism!!! this cannot be forgotten. any discussion abt this topic without racism front and center as the PRIMARY REASON for this change is toothless and impotent.
the auto companies created the term "jaywalking" to demonize walking on streets, associated it with stupidity and "undesirable people", and offered automobile ownership as the solution. they convinced the white upper and middle classes that public transit was a waste of money and did they really want to sit next to Those People on a trip to the park? and CONVENIENTLY built highways through communities of color and immigrant communities, neatly displacing them and gentrifying the surrounding areas in one fell swoop. it was because of RACISM and CLASSISM. the auto companies weaponized racism and classism to sell privileged white people on a stupid technology that actively harms everyone on the planet themselves included.
electric trains are an efficient technology that does a lot of good for communities and is extremely necessary in the coming years of climate catastrophe but we canNOT discuss this with discussing class and race and protecting people affected by pro-public-transit policies while implementing them. we MUST protect vulnerable communities liable to get ousted by luxury apartments built next to the new metro station. rent controlled apartments and redesigned zoning laws are a MUST.
In the 1920s, auto groups redefined who owned the city streets.
For reference on the history of jaywalking
