Itβs finally happened! In a perfectΒ Derek Craven Day celebration, our Trailblazer conversations continue this week with thee Lisa Kleypas, historical romance royalty, who changed the game when she brought working class heroes to historicals. We discuss her four decades of work in romance, from historical to contemporary to magical realism and now into historical fiction, touching on the Kleypas hero, the way she builds series, and the ways that she continues to push herself as a storyteller. And yes, she was kind enough to play a round of Derek Craven Would Never. π
I hate when men smirk and gloat and say shit like βWomen are attracted to powerful men,β like that negates any feminist impulse, like they think that at the heart of all women is this little, mincing girl that wants to be dominated.
I just roll my eyes because, dude. If you ever read the second half of any fucking harlequin novel ever, and saw how the hero always ends up blubbering on his knees and saying shit like βI canβt live without you! You unman me!β youβd realize that being attracted to powerful men is just the first part of a two-step plan.
The second step is to completely fucking annihilate him.
Apparently this is the most important thing Iβll ever say.
*clears throat* Allow me to quote Jayne Ann Krentz: βIn the romance novels β¦ the woman always wins. With courage, intelligence, and gentleness she brings the most dangerous creature on earth, the human male, to his knees. More than that, she forces him to acknowledge her power as a woman.β (βIntroductionβ from Dangerous Men and Adventurous Women: Romance Writers on the Appeal of Romance.) The romance hero may start as a total alphahole, but by the end of the novel, as stated above, HE HAS TO CHANGE. He needs to become respectful and treat the heroine as an equal partner, otherwise it wonβt work. This is why Elizabeth Bennet refuses Mr Darcy the first time but accepts him later. This is what so many people miss. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this post.
Iβve read something about this elsewhere β¦ one of the key elements of a harlequin romance is βthe grovel.β
Itβs when the dude (or the person filling the role filled by the dude in a βtraditionalβ romance) gets their head out of their ass and goes βI was wrong, and I apologize.β The specific flavor of the grovel depends on the story and the characters, but itβs always there and itβs important because it puts the power in the womanβs hands.

I made a deck of historical romance novel recommendations by trope!
Ufffffff Mila Finelli did it again.
Ever since I heard Mila would be writing a story about an Italian mob boss in a small town in New York, I was so excited, and did not disappointed, I LOVED it so much!!!
This book has everything: sensuality, a mafia boss who falls at the feet of the heroine, (both characteristic of Mila's books), and even has parts that are funny, (π chicken parm π)
I also loved the cameos of beloved characters from the Kings of Italy seriesπ
Can't wait for the rest of the series!!!
Thanks to Valentine PR and Mila Finelli for the eArc
Can you recommend a book where the FMC falls in love while getting over a previous heartbreak?
Right off the bat here's what I can think of:
Prince of Dreams by Lisa Kleypas: Nikolas threatens the guy who's seriously courting Emma into dumping her (to be fair... he is a fortune hunter) and Emma comes straight to him for consolation...... sex. She doesn't actually fall for him until after they're married though.
Married by Morning by Lisa Kleypas: Veeeery similar situation to Prince of Dreams; Harry Rutledge outs the guy who's courting Poppy to his disapproving father and the dad puts his foot down, so Poppy is dumped.... shortly after which Harry publicly compromises Poppy, ensuring they're married.
What I Did for a Duke by Julie Anne Long: Moncrieffe offers to help Genevieve make her the guy she has a crush on jealous after he proposes to another friend and she's super cut up about it.
Say You'll Be Mine by Naina Kumar: Similar to What I Did for a Duke but contemporary; Meghna is heartbroken when her ex/current friend/crush proposes to someone else, then asks Meghna to be in his wedding party. She asks Karthik, the guy she was arranged-marriage set up with to pretend to be her date to the wedding.
Giuseppe Dangelico Pino, Silver Surrender paperback cover, 1996
The Best of Everything by Maris Soule, Harlequin Temptation
