Emily Brönte was right I wish I were a girl again, half savage and hardy, and free... Why am I so changed? I'm sure I should be myself were I once among the heather on those hills.

not every piece of art centered on a straight woman is "hetslop" and at some point it becomes misogyny to dismiss art abt women with that term
first reply that really annoyed meeeee (if i'm remembering correctly, idk it's been a while since i looked at this post)
there is nothing to be gained by acting like women aren't oppressed by men, and nothing to be gained by acting like straight and bisexual women have nothing interesting to say abt their relationships with men. and as several ppl have pointed out in the notes, the term "hetslop" is often levied at Black women especially as well as other women of color. so like. just don'tttttt be annoying on my post like this thank you
having a multi year long character obsession becomes like a abstract thought experiment at some point
Evangelion 5.0: You Can (Not) Go to Bed
Unfortunately NGE hits the best when you're like 12 miles deep into the mental health spiral
The parallel between E5 and E6 of Evangelion with first Gendo and then Shinji forcing open the entry plug to get Rei inside kills me.
Firstly, because of how Gendo and Shinji's motivations oppose one another. Gendo cares for Rei only as a tool to advance the Human Instrumentality Project/caring for Rei as an afterimage (to him) of his wife. Meanwhile Shinji cares about Rei as a person (if we ignore the misogyny his character exhibits) and a fellow Eva pilot/sufferer.
But also because Shinji's tears, his obvious relief, are the first time that Rei has received positive attention related to herself as a human being. It's the moment when she realizes that maybe she can learn to connect with people, even if she also doesn't know how to react in the situation. And to me it's the beginning of Rei's path to recognizing her personhood, the beginning of some kind of healing (and also realizing that Gendo Ikari is like, the literal worst).

NGE really is my white whale because it is both one of the best pieces of television ever created and also kneecapped at every turn by its misogyny
