"This gorgeous green, / this searing lilac, / this heart that is nothing but mystery.”
— Alejandra Pizarnik, “Poem 9″, Diana’s Tree (trans. Yvette Siegert).
I find it super tedious when people tell American women that they have no right to complain about sexism because women have it worse in Afghanistan.
First of all, I have little faith that anybody doing Afghanistan whataboutism cares about women whose oppressors are men of color and second of all, I'm three generations away from my great-grandmother being married off at 13 to a man a decade older and outliving 6 out of her 13 children, and just two generations away from my grandmother being married off as a teenager and having three kids by the age of 20 and her youngest son dying when she was just 22.
My life is that of my ancestors' wildest dreams, whether or not they realized it, and it makes me angry that other people don't realize and value how precarious our privileges are.
I sometimes feel like my parents actively insulated me from experiencing racism when I was a kid. I think that they really wanted me to grow up like any white American kid and never see myself any less because of the color of my skin, and for better or worse, it worked.
Former NFL kicker Jay Feely, who is running for Arizona's 1st Congressional District, knows potential opponent Amish Shah from their New Yor
Like, I told my dad about this Congressional race and he straight up was like "There's zero way an Indian doctor can beat a former NFL kicker in a Trump+3 district" and I didn't realize he was that ... blackpilled about American racism and resigned rather than outraged about it.
Then again, my father is not a complainer, not publicly and not even in private, which I can't say of myself, and it's arguably the most American quality of them all.

My collective Wario is all the pathetically male-centered women of Substack that think their badly written and completely unedited journal entries about their ops, who don't even register their existence, are worth publishing.
Just profoundly undignified behavior all around.
Living rightly with Jia Tolentino
I take no stand on whether Tolentino should drink iced coffee, or fly, or order from Amazon, or do Ballet Barre, or contribute to NYT Opinion. I am not moralizing about how she should spend her money or her time or her political capital. I am merely pointing out that shooting and crying is not a way to be moral, it’s a way to do away with the demands of morality altogether.

To say what everybody else is whispering, this is about Hillary Scholten (D-MI) and John James (R-MI)
Scholten's soon to be ex-husband filed for divorce under objectively horrific circumstances (not disclosing the details publicly because it's not anybody's business), there isn't even a power imbalance here, and her only mistake is having an affair with a married man.
Given how many Republicans and progressive Democrats are gloating about this (Scholten is a moderate/Blue Dog that flipped a Republican-held House seat and now wins it by double digits), it's perfectly obvious that they don't care about the sinfulness of infidelity (I do for the record) or John James' wife's feelings, they're just reveling in Scholten's humiliation and hoping they electorally benefit
If Scholten underperforms this fall, this is likely why
