watching a documentary (about the exotic animal trade in the US) right now and just learned that in 2011 in ohio a private zoo owner released at least 52 animals from their cages before killing himself and that all of the animals were killed, in case anyone here still supports animal captivity/ownership.

genuinely wondering, where did the idea that vegans don't care about the welfare and conditions of the people who are picking fruits and vegetables? and why do non vegans make themselves exempt from it, as if they're eating completely different fruits and vegetables we vegans don't have access to?

if anything, i've had the exact opposite experiences non vegans are claiming. every vegan i've come across agrees that no person should be working under harsh and dangerous conditions, or be exploited for their labor, and fully understand where the food we eat comes from and want these systems to be dismantled and changed and work/advocate for it

while the non vegans i've talked to pull the "no ethical consumption under capitalism so who cares about how i choose to do things" excuse and don't even bother engaging with or thinking critically about the subject unless they want to pwn vegans or whatever.

"Veganism is anti-Indigenous" is a talking point non-Indigenous people use to avoid accountability, and it's literally the noble savage trope. tumblr pisses me off so fucking bad why does no one ever wants to talk about WHO is working in the slaughter houses and under what conditions. everyone is always like ‘oh you care more about cows and pigs than the exploited farmers having to produce your quinoa’ (as if only vegetarians and vegans eat quinoa but w/e) and its like girl who the fuck do you think is slaughtering these animals? Slaughter houses are shady & dangerous places w/ a long history of failed regulatory oversight. not to mention the mental aspect of having to slaughter animals on industrial scale every single day. These workers are mostly immigrants and refugees and they’re being exploited. Fourteen year old children were found working in slaughterhouses in California like lollll yeah and you paid for that. calling yourself a ‘leftist’ and defending the industrial breeding and killing of animals is hypocritical it just is. and thats fine like we’re all hypocrites but let’s get off that high horse and get a bit real okay?
