I like the idea of Din Djarin never bathing in the waters of the mines of Mandalore to atone for breaking the creed. Even after re-taking Mandalore.
He refuses to do so because he refuses to see removing his helmet for his child as a transgression, a sin. Foundlings are the future and his child means everything to him. If that means he cannot be seen as a mandalorian by his covert, so be it.
I am so back to the Star Wars fandom (now this Din-pic is available as print💅)
The difference between Luke Skywalker single-handedly freeing his friends from Jabba the Hutt’s palace and Luke Skywalker standing on top of the stairs and whispering “I will not fight you, Father” is already a story about how “heroes are actually just people”, we never needed that to be deconstructed further.
I think a lot of people forget that Darth Vader being Luke’s father wasn’t just added for a twist, but as a deconstruction of revenge. It’s so easy to want to kill this monstrous cyborg but what if he was related to you? What then? It doesn’t change anything he’s done but it does sure change your perspective. Star Wars has always been subversive. Luke doesn’t get the girl, he doesn’t defeat the Empire, he doesn’t win against Darth Vader. It wasn’t the Jedi who triumphed in the end. It was the little farmboy who just wanted his father to come home.
#Star Wars#Luke Skywalker#something I love about the throne room scene is that Luke’s victory has NOTHING to do with his force powers#or his lightsaber skills or anything like that#it has everything to do with who he is as a person#(same with Vader’s victory over Palpatine)#everything that happens there is tied to character saving Ranger’s tags @thirddoctor
Okay but this iconic moment, right?
The full quote is of course:
The Emperor: "Your hate has made you powerful. Now fulfill your destiny, take your father's place by my side."
Luke Skywalker: "Never. I'll never turn to the dark side. You failed, Your Highness. I am a Jedi, like my father before me."
The Emperor: "So be it, Jedi."
And YES AMAZING ICONIC
BUT
Why Your Highness, Luke?
The proper address is Your Majesty, that's an Emperor.
But consider that this guy is a Tatooine moisture farmer and his exposure to royalty at this point in his life is exactly Princess Leia Organa.
And she doesn't address herself by any special title, so his mental file of royal titles actually comes from Han and Leia bickering at each other
So his entire understanding of royal protocol comes from exactly two sources:
Han Solo
And being a menace
And Han doesn't actually say Your Highness most of the time!
Luke's mental filing cabinet of "ways to address royalty" consists of: Your Highness, Your Highnessness, Your Worshipfulness, Your Supreme Exalted Pain In My Ass
It's actually a combination of a minor miracle, a supreme act of will, and a smidge of luck that he whipped out "Your Highness" at all, that could have gone sideways fast
Picture:
Luke is exhausted, emotionally compromised, and running on approximately four hours of sleep accumulated over the last week.
He opens his mouth.
"You have failed, Your High—"
And somewhere in his brain, Han Solo's voice echoes across the years:
Highnessness.
Luke has to fight for his LIFE, not against the dark side but against the intrusive thought.
"You have failed, Your High—"
highnessness
"—ness. I am a Jedi—"
Meanwhile Vader, under several dozen layers of other stuff happening at the exact same time, whose formative experience with royalty was with a QUEEN, is internally flabbergasted by his insolent child
For Force sake, Luke, that's an Emperor. It's "Your Majesty."
And then immediately: Actually no, wait, keep being rude. That's my boy.

in light of Leia's Force-insight abilities, I propose that the reason Han was so offended by Leia calling him a 'scruffy-looking nerf-herder' was because this was her pulling directly on his own self-image issues and doubts
this also implies that Tarkin was self-conscious about the way he smelled, Luke hated being reminded of how short he is, and that Darth Vader might have been wrestling with the idea that he's a literal attack dog leashed to Tarkin

STAR WARS REBELS 2.06, Brothers of the Broken Horn
Okay but I can never think about this too deeply because like most throwaway storylines in Star Wars it is above and beyond insane when you dig into it because the tragedy is utterly compounding.
The thing is - Hondo and Obi-Wan weren’t friends. They were platonic nemesis. Amusing opposites in terms of character, morality and generally speaking of the Law.
But they could have been friends. They knew each other through some harrowing self-induced shenanigans. Got to know and perhaps appreciate each other’s sense of humor. Admired each others wily cunning. Had an understanding, I think you would call it.
And Hondo was probably fond of Obi-Wan in the way you are almost compelled to be fond of someone who amicably thwarts your villainous deeds but never quite so well as to actually arrest you for them. That practically makes him an enabler, really, in a pirates point of view.
So this guy, right, this funny, tricky Jedi, it’s sort of a good day whenever you run into him, even if he’s always peskily getting in the way of your grand schemes and quest for riches. Whatever, he’s a damn fine drinking partner regardless!
Those are good times, all told. Good times.
And then one day you find out he’s dead. You find out that he was murdered. That every single one of his people, who, in your experience, are pretty similar under the surface ( they never give you too hard a time, after all. Good sports, and all that) has been murdered.
You liked him. You liked rather more than a few of them, actually.
You’re not sure if the two of you were ever actually friends.
(Surely you were, right?)
(You could have been.)
(There is no one left alive to ask.)
And it’s not - not this huge deal, right? I mean really, you barely knew the guy. Barely knew the funny young knight that was with him, or the spunky little padawan, or those brave and dastardly younglings.
But you just… think about that, sometimes. About them.
And you wonder.
The Law says they were all traitors. The government says they were corrupt. Says they bewitched people. Says they stole children and coveted power.
Hondo Ohnaka is a pirate. He’s never been on the right side of the law, or the government.
(Turns out we were both outlaws, eh?)
(So they say. So they say. I doubt it’s true.)
There is no one left alive to ask for the truth.
Whatever they were then, is whatever Hondo decides they were. There’s no one left alive to correct him.
So they were friends, he decides.
(We were friends, weren’t we? )
He just… would like to be able to have said they were. In the end.
(The Jedi still had friends in the galaxy. They did. They do.)
