#look. i am as excited as the next guy to see hudson williams in another thing #i will say that the canadian film industry is not often turning out bangers #and by bangers I mean like. shows with broad/international appeal #when they hit they hit good. heated rivalry obviously. schitt's creek is another one that blew up beyond our borders #to name a few #but there is a lot of tv that gets produced here that is either mid or weird (affectionate)#i would love to see yaga be another banger but i also think we might get more of a weird (affectionate) series with this one #anyway im gonna set my expectations at the same level i would for any piece of canadian media #and see what happens

AND another thing. shane with undiagnosed ocd is so important to me. you’re telling me this guy is catastrophising throughout the long game, obsessively thinking about how everything could fall apart if he does anything wrong, if his eyes linger on ilya for a second too long, if he acts out, if he doesn’t act at all, if he notices, if he doesn’t, and it’s just never reflected on? he has compulsive, intrusive thoughts, right down to crucifying himself for things outside his control, and it’s just never addressed?

ocd is often misunderstood as like. strict habits that comfort someone, when in reality they are obsessive rituals that become obsessive to try and alleviate harm. if i think a certain way, the world won’t end. if i think the world will end, then i have to protect myself by disrupting the thoughts with repetitive, invasive action until the thoughts abate.

back to shane. he is a hockey robot. his life is perfectly structured. then everything goes wrong. everything happens just like he thought it would. he should have been more careful. he should have listened. he didn’t do it right so he manifested it into being. if only he’d been more cautious. if only he’d loved ilya more. if only he hadn’t thought about it at all. maybe if he’d eaten better, put his left skate on first, knocked three times then again till he got it right, count the number of forks in the drawer, check to make sure the oven was off, gone out on the ice last, waited three seconds before opening the door, done his tape from right to left, and keep doing this over and over again until he gets it perfect then maybe this never would happened. maybe he would’ve been safe

#ive read a couple ocd shane character studies and they're so good #always heartbreaking #he tries so hard to control for everything #the things he's afraid of are Real and they Can hurt him #and he's doing everything in his power to stand in the way of his fears being realized. but he can't #no one could but he carries the knowledge that he can't in a different way #because he tries so hard. constantly #sometimes in ways that make sense externally and sometimes in ways that only make sense to him #there is so much weight on his shoulders :( my shane...
