I don't think new tennis fans realise the insanity of playing the same mind games with your rival for 25 years and never speaking about it until you retire.
Andy Roddick in his podcast said the most liberating thing about retirement is that you can actually TALK about tennis with the people you played with your whole career.
Tennis is the most physical non-contact sport. Especially in the early 2000s before sports analytics took over, a lot of the game strategy is based on how a certain opponent 'feel' when you play against them, how they hit the ball, approach a serve, react against your forehand, etc (see Federer's interview with Trevor Noah for reference).
When you play them long enough, say like Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, you knew your rival's entire gameplan and became strangely intimate with their tennis vocabulary. It's like having a silent 20 year long conversation with someone through your racket and strings alone.
What's fascinating is both side of the players would know exactly what's going on but this wouldn't be obvious to the outside eyes. Both Federer and Nadal, in completely separate interviews, different times after they retire, describe their match-up in exactly the same words.
They specifically use the term "a game of chess", where they both know each other's strategies: Nadal trying to damage him against his backhand, open Federer wide enough so he can pass him down the line or force errors, Federer trying to take the ball early, hit aggressive with his forehand and break his rhythm.
Then it comes down to a battle of wills, each trying to dominate the match with their strategy, seeing who will relent, who plays better that day and on which surface. As Nadal said, "there wasn't any secrets", and when Federer was asked whether there's anything from Nadal's game that still surprises him, he said that after 20 years he "knows everything there is to know."
Courtside tennis and tv coverage don't really capture the nuances of how this game is played at a pro level. A tennis match, especially at tour level, is almost like a silent 4-5 hours mental debate in front of millions of people where only two people are privy to what's actually being said.
I don't think people grasp how intensely intimate career-long rivalries are and how soul crushing it is to lose them. When Federer retired, Nadal said that he'd have a really tough time coming to terms with never being able to 'feel the feeling of playing against Federer' again. Beyond the mental loss, it's also a profound physical loss, where each player's style of play is almost unreplicable in a top 100 level.
It's the grief of knowing that in one day, it'll be the last time you're on the receiving end of that forehand, almost like an end to a 20 year long conversation you've been having with the same person on the greatest stadiums around the world.
Interview references:
many women are excited to get old and weird, but i have great news that it's fully possible to become weird now, before you get old. just imagine the heights of weirdness you will be able to reach in fifty years if you get started now. that's what I think

i love love loooove 'better than the fucking yankees' because shane's not just some hockey-obsessed jock, he's a straight up jock across the board. he's an all-rounder!!! he's a hockey player, and hockey players literally spend like 80-90% of their time talking about all the other sports they're watching. he watches sportscenter like it's the nightly news, has the baseball on in the background all summer. he's showing up at the olympics for sports simply because he knows the athletes, and as a top canadian athlete with his level of marketing and sponsorship, he's met and knows A Lot of athletes. he's getting invited to grand slam tournaments. he's reading all those high performing athlete biographies. he has an opinion on who's going to win the super bowl, who looks good in the nba, which teams will do best in the world cup, who's in form for the masters. in tlg he's participating in the great canadian pastime of putting on some late night australian rugby/aussie rules just for the sake of having some live sports running in the background. he and ilya put the tennis on later in the book for the same reason. that boy is a fucking jock!!!
if s2 was up to me i would 100% include shaneâs centre ice fantasy and iâd set it up like. ottawa vs montreal. theyâre skating up for the face off. the viewer thinks itâs a regular game. thereâs a whole crowd, two teams, the referees, etc. then they look at each other and theyâre both dropping their helmets glove-drop style and making out and desperately taking off each otherâs gear and with every layer that comes off thereâs another âbackground layerâ lost, like the teams disappear, the crowd noise fades out, etc. the last thing to go is the commentary. the whole thing is narrated like âthere appears to be a delay to the face off as shane hollander adjusts his helmet and- oh. oh wow. well. thatâs unexpected folks. i did not think this game would have many surprises for us but here we are. this will delay the puck drop for sure. i donât recall this ever happening on- oh good god letâs leave them to it we canât show that on the broadcastâ
and they fuck with ilya standing and holding shane with shaneâs legs around his waist (idc that this is not feasible itâs shaneâs dream and also mine). scene ends with shane all moaning and Lost In The Sauce with his head tipped back and his back arching and ilyaâs mouth on his neck. followed by a hard cut to him in the same position but half asleep in bed like in the book and ilya waking up beside him like đŤŞđĽľ
in the interest of fair whackings my favorite ilya flaw is his obnoxious martyr complex that is actually breathtakingly selfish and a way of avoiding intimacy to keep from getting hurt <3 there is just so much there to explore!!!
the sentence âshane obviously does not want to be in a relationship with the giving treeâ just popped into my head fully formed and of course i felt the need to share
Ilyaâs Iâd do anything for youâ and Shaneâs âI donât want that/god are you okay?â Is so meaty to me.
It betrays such a lack of self worth but it also has him assuming negative things about Shane and how Shane perceives him. Shane doesnât want Ilya for what he can give him and Ilya has such a difficult time internalising that it makes him resentful in his martyrdom ughhh. I love him
That one post
are you good at staying still?

hand: on cock. eyes: barely open. boy whoâs not quite my boyfriend yet but the love of my life: saying a million words to me in my second language after he just woke me up. but oh wait. oh. he wants to be together. with me. donât cry. kiss him. kiss him you fool. tell him you love him. now in a language you share. i love him. holy shit. he loves me. life is worth living. barebacking :)
1.05 -> 1.06 requested by @littlespoonevan <3 (in episode five, ilya conceals his feelings with language; in episode six, ilya feels safe enough to say that he's terrified out loud) (all because of shane's earnestynuke heading straight towards his walls)
