barrio triste was so good. it's probably difficult to find where to watch it outside of colombia but if you guys have the chance to watch it in theaters PLEASE do.... if not please at least check it out whenever it's on streaming platforms. instantly going to my found footage hall of fame. God, earlier today i came across an interview where somebody asked zendaya about her work with iconic cinematographers and she talked about how the camera sometimes is a character so the cameraman/cinematographer becomes a fellow performer. and i love love loooove that feeling of the camera being a character, and it's probably my favorite thing about found footage films specifically.
i'm not from medellín ir even colombia so i'm not like... fully connected with the history of violence here, i don't really feel things as i know people from here do. i'm really just learning every day how things used to be, how to some extent they still are, and how it all affects colombians, how they all still feel it and how it shapes the country as it is now. this movie was an incredible window into all that. it felt so real and so here. i watched it with a friend who is from medellín and she said there were parts where she wondered if it was a documentary. that's how real it felt...
also, original music by arca. INCREDIBLE sound experience if you watch it in theaters but be warned it is quite aggressive sonically. like overwhelmingly so. But there were also a couple of lovely softer tracks, there was a piano piece near the end that had me hypnotized. i neeeeeed them to release the score.
4.5/5 stars. it's a social drama/thriller that transitions beautifully into a surrealist horror (hence the backrooms comparison in my letterboxd review), but i do feel like that surrealist part near the dragged a bit much which is why im taking away half a star.
