The library (aka me and a quarter time person) are making the AI department sad and frustrated because we aren't coming up with a good project for a "tool to relieve some of the day-to-day burden of our work" and yeah man.
Like, 80% of my work is physical materials, 10% is research that I actually enjoy most of the time and would need to double check all the ai results, and like 10% the most basic email and data entry.
"but we want you to use it!" but it can't do anything I need help with and everything it """can""" do would add extra work
Can it move boxes? Can it deal with the 14,000 boxes of backlog in the warehouse? Can it research in the microfilm collection? Can it shelve this stuff in the library stacks? Can it take even one of the “hey can you deal with all these files in this office/closet/cabinet” I get? What about shipping materials from regional offices? Can it reformat any of these media types? No? Ok well those are the areas that I need assistance. I already have templates created for the emails and data stuff
i don’t think i’m exaggerating when i say that the average height for women in the US would increase by at least an inch if teen girls were allowed to eat as much as teen boys are
and not to bring my own clocky bitch ass into this but if cis women weren’t so consistently starved their entire lives you’d see a lot more cis women with the kind of bodies that we currently associate closely with trans women. the amount that the standards of feminine presentation are culturally defined by malnutrition is crazy
The heat’s been brutal this summer but we still gotta eat! If you’re like me, heat might suppress your appetite, and the last thing any of us want is to sweat over a hot stove and oven when it’s already boiling outside. Here are some of my favorite hot-weather recipes to keep hydrated and fed with when the weather is unbearable! (All recipes should be un-paywalled).
NYT’s best gazpacho (lives up to its name!!)
Persian cold cucumber soup (if you like tzatziki you will like this!)
Eric Kim’s cold noodles with tomato (infinitely riffable Korean flavor profile — for a creamier and less brothy take, try these cold sesame noodles too)
Vietnamese chicken and herb salad (this is an excellent time to get a rotisserie chicken so you don’t have to turn the oven on)
Radish sandwiches with butter and salt (and in a similar vein, if you dig this flavor combo you should try this Polish cottage cheese dip on some good rye bread or even crackers)
It’s still a little early in the season, but you can never go wrong with a BLT (or, if you don’t eat bacon, try this tomato furikake sandwich in its place)
Infinite iterations of pasta salad! You can use anything you got but here is a template I like.
Assorted dense bean salads. This back pocket canned salad is a weird combo of jarred ingredients but it slaps, this hoagie-inspired one is super satisfying, and cowboy caviar is a classic for a reason.
Poke bowls! Canned tuna mixed with some kewpie mayo and sriracha is a budget-friendly riff on the usual ahi and makes everything taste like a spicy tuna roll, but use whatever proteins you like, this is more of a loose template.
Please feel free to add some of your own favorite summer recipes in the replies and comments! We’ll get through this together. 🤝🤝🤝
my moms potato salad is really easy and also can be customized to your taste! recipe under the cut!
the amounts are mostly approximate, use your judgement as needed
5 lbs potatoes (i use yukon gold)
1/2 to 1 jar of pickles (i like clausen)
1 onion
6 stalks of celery
2 tablespoons pickle juice (or white vinegar)
4 tablespoons mayo
1 teaspoon paprika
salt and pepper to taste
boil potatoes (i like to cut them first into bite sizes and leave on the skin)
chop onion, celery, and pickles and add to large bowl
mix mayo, pickle juice, paprika until desired consistency, add more mayo if you want thicker, add more pickle juice to make thinner.
when potatoes are able to be stabbed easily with a fork, drain them in the sink and then add them to other ingredients and pour on the dressing. mix and voila!
ive been known to add chicken, carrots, eggs, green onions... whatever i have lying around that looks good!
Agua Fresca (esp if you’re not a Gatorade fan) < José el Cook on YT, adjust amounts to your needs. You can make it with a lot of different fruits, and he also has a recipe for agua de pepino, which is the cucumber version.
Gỏi cuốn or Vietnamese Spring Rolls, and Onigiri < basic recipe to save you the headache of recipe websites
Gỏi cuốn
Rice paper wrappers (check any Asian mart, but your grocery store might have them in the Asian/ethnic/whatever section)
Rice noodles (vermicelli kind)
Protein of your choice - traditionally cooked shrimp or pork but you could absolutely make it vegetarian/vegan with fried tofu, tempeh, etc
Whatever herbs/greens you want: mint, cilantro, Thai basil, green onion, leafy lettuce, etc. Herbs aren’t necessary but I HIGHLY recommend for flavor. Cucumber works too but you gotta slice it really thin so it rolls well and doesn’t tear the paper.
Optional: crushed peanuts + peanut sauce, soy sauce, or fish sauce to dip
ASSEMBLE!
Either cook your protien in the evening, or buy pre-cooked. I recommend pre cooked shrimp either way if going the shrimp route bc they’re such a pain to de-vein and I never trust raw pre-deveined shrimp.
Soak your rice noodles. You do not need to boil them. You can soak them in cold water if you have some time, or put them in boiled water for a few minutes and then transfer to an ice bath. They need to be bouncy.
Gently wet your rice paper. You can dip it (and I mean QUICK, like a couple of seconds) in a plate of cold water. Then transfer to your plate/cutting board or to some plastic wrap.
Layer in your ingredients. Don’t worry about stuffing it too full or under stuffing. The first roll is always like the first pancake. You’ll get a feel for it. Crushed peanuts can go here for extra texture :)
Wrap kinda like a burrito. If not using plastic wrap, wet hands help keep it from sticking. If you tear your rice paper don’t despair. Just wrap a second one around it.
Enjoy with sauce of your choice :) I like to make a bootleg shitty peanut sauce using peanut butter, sriracha, a dash of fish sauce, and a dash of soy sauce. Bonus if the PB is crunchy.
Very tasty and surprisingly filling. They’ll sneak up on you. Quick to make and nearly stove-free.
Onigiri:
Cooked white sticky rice (not the glutinous kind. Reg). Rice cooker is best because it doesn’t heat up your house and there’s no food safety risk from leftover cooled rice. Pre-cooked rice works too but it’s expensive and you need to get a Japanese/Korean brand to ensure it’s sticky. Warm rice really does work best here. If you need to cook your own, add a half cup to a cup or more (depends on if you’re cooking for you or a crowd) to a pot. Rinse with cold water a couple times until your water is basically clear. Then add water up to your first knuckle. Add a pinch of salt if you want, then bring it up to a boil. Boil for about 10-15min, then cover and shut off the heat completely and let it steam the rest of the way for about 15-20 minutes.
Nori (big sheets of seaweed) I rec getting this at an Asian store if you have access, bc it’s stupid how much it costs at a big grocer
Optional: Rice seasoning (various flavors, found crazily expensively in reg grocery stores in the Asian section or cheaply in an Asian grocery store.
Filling of your choice (you also don’t technically have to fill) - pickled plums and spicy mayo tuna are usually my go-to.
ASSEMBLE!
Using wet hands so it doesn’t stick to you, grab a handful of rice. Measure with your soul. You can just do this with your hands, spread it out on some plastic wrap, or use a fancy onigiri mold
Flatten it into a thick pancake shape, then add a spoonful of your filling
Wrap your rice around the filling like you’re packing a snowball, and shape. You can make it a disk, which is probably easiest, or a traditional triangle, or a lump idk I’m not your mother.
Give it some nori pants (or a nori cloak). Kitchen scissors work best to cut the nori. Wetting your knife or your scissors, or coating in some sesame oil can save you a headache.
Dip it in or sprinkle on some of your rice seasoning, if you’re using it.

Archaeologists uncovered a 1,000-year-old Viking textile production center near Aarhus, revealing large-scale cloth making and trade.
The site sits near Søften in eastern Jutland, about 10 kilometers north of modern Aarhus. Excavations by the Moesgaard Museum show a planned production area instead of a normal farming village. The settlement covered at least 100,000 square meters. Most of the work focused on making textiles, though other forms of handwork also took place there.
Researchers found an area where flax was prepared before workers turned the plant into linen. They also uncovered 82 pit houses, small sunken buildings linked with Viking workshops. Many held spindle whorls and loom weights, showing cloth production took place on a large scale.

a video essay/documentary followup to my trans nihilism video. this was difficult to make due to intense chronic fatigue and burnout. there are some audio issues as well. we carry on though! the wisdom and joy and love in this video and all the interviews was palpable and has deeply affected me and my relationship to my community and my friends. it also allowed me to speak extensively with a songwriting idol of mine. this was a wonderful opportunity.
often, trans suffering is a more palatable story than trans joy. many want to watch us suffer and go "wow thats sad", or to wallow. look at all the wonderful people in this video. enjoy our shared happiness and my friends wisdom. please. also ezra furman is there
