Collins is gone.
Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.
Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.
All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.
After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.
It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of years—far longer than settlers have been in Canada—and made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotēn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.
And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racism—like Kashechewan—because it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.
The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.
Right now, the AFN is currently accepting donations to help Collins First Nation. If you're able to, please consider donating.
ONWA (Ontario Native Women's Association) is another great place to donate to. They have outreach vans going to motels and inns and offering food, water, resources, and cultural support to those impacted by the wildfires.
Other places to consider donating to are Mikinakoos Emergency Fund, Red Cross, True North Aid, Indigenous Climate Action. You can also send donations directly to Whitesand First Nation via e-transfer ([email protected]) and they request that you add your full name in the e-transfer comment section to receive a tax receipt.
*Before sending money, verify that the appeal appears on an official First Nation, Tribal Council or registered charity channel.
If you can't offer financial support, please consider donating items of need. Moontime Connections is currently accepting drop-off donations. If you live in the Thunder Bay area, Namaygoosisagagun Health Office is also taking in donations! They can also bemailed to Superior Inn Hotel & Conference Centre at 555 West Arthur Street, Thunder Bay, ON, P7E 5P8.
items needed are: food, diapers, medical masks, men’s and women’s joggers (all sizes), children’s clothing (newborn to size 14), children’s shoes, summer clothing, men’s clothing, toiletries (lotion, Vaseline, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, etc.), strollers, adult depends-all sizes, dog & cat food

one time I went over to a friend's house and their housemate was making paper in the living room, and we saw this big tub full of water they were using to dissolve old scrap paper into a slurry, and everyone was immediately like "oh, you need scrap paper?" and started turning out their jacket pockets and producing expired coupons and bus tickets and crumpled receipts and old shopping lists and whatever else they'd been carrying round with them for no good reason, and passing it all to the paper-making housemate to make sure it was suitable before it got torn up and dropped into the tub, while people took turns stirring the slurry with a big wooden stick. it was strangely ritualistic, like presenting an offering to some kind of temple elder for inspection before placing it in a watery shrine to be devoured and reformed. pulp for the pulp god.
a 9 page labor of love after chapter 5 of equanimity and this poem <3
So beautifully done this is insane

Alrighty. I saw you in the PHM tag, but it wasn't clear from the guidelines if the request I'm thinking of would work, so feel free to delete if not.
May I please request an Eva Stratt x Reader or Ryland Grace reader with the song, Garosuilgil At Dawn please? ( https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XAd0Qv2dgAs )
Sure thing! I love Eva Stratt. This song was so fitting for her. I could see her relating the lyrics to Grace as well 😭. This song made me imagine nights where Stratt walks home alone, remembering what she used to have with you.
Tags/Warnings: 1.6k words, gn!reader but in my mind its lesbians, pre-PHM, Eva Stratt is Sad, Gen rating, no use of yn.
NIGHT WALKS
Eva slept at the office most nights now.
Before, when she was still trying to preserve a thread of work-life balance, late nights were routine, but she still made it home. Back when there was someone waiting.
Eva Stratt did not believe in fate or soulmates or anything so superstitious—at least not on the record. Maybe there was a God, but he was clearly not so concerned with the details that he directed the lives of individual humans so carefully. Or the species, for that matter, given the current state of affairs.
Secretly, though, she knew that something in the stars aligned to bring the two of you together.
stunning!
i was the exception to the rule. i should be the ambassador of the american dream. i did it all right.
we were dirt poor. my parents sacrificed a lot so i could be in an area where the schools were exceptional. we all bootstrapped. i paid my own way through college and grad school. i have student debt, but not a lot of it. it took me a long time and a lot of jobs and working and connections and luck and all of it.
now i make good money at a good (remote!) job with pretty good health insurance. I have vision and dental. they even offer pet insurance and 6 free meetings with a therapist. i work with an exceptionally sweet manager, i like my team, and i don't mind the job. i make much more than some of my friends.
so why the fuck can't i afford to eat.
i looked it up. ten years ago, my current salary would amount to 106 thousand american dollars. it was "well over" median wage.
my position's base salary (according to what i could find) has only increased by about 3 thousand dollars. after all, the work has not changed drastically. estimates say that for me to live "comfortably" in this city, i'd need to be making 139,776 dollars a year, before taxes. i am making half of that.
i always bristle when someone on the other side says something about how we just don't want to work, how it's really about me and my failure to succeed. that i need to be pushier, flashier, better; and then capitalism will work out for me.
in the car yesterday, she said that america is probably fucked. that the amount of damage trump is doing to america is largely permanent. i have difficulty arguing with her. prices went up during the pandemic, and then they just - stayed there. i want to believe in the inevitable rise of the human spirit (you know i'm an optimist) but the truth of the matter feels like a smeared handprint - i have no proof it gets easier.
elon musk becomes or unbecomes a trillionaire. we spend billions of dollars in a pointless war. health insurance companies kill people in cold blood. ai "takes over" jobs; assigns you a random number score for your resume so you are automatically rejected by the system. you're fired to make more profit for the shareholders; they rehire someone else for half of your pay. the government spends millions of dollars to destroy national monuments. the white house needs a ballroom. the fbi just posted that they can preemptively arrest someone for domestic terrorism for "extreme" beliefs about america. when i went to go check my facts about that - i found that the this fucking government website has an email sign-up popup that covers the entire page & i literally could not figure out how to close it.
so yeah, the price of eggs is not going to go down. the cost of RAM is not going to go down. why would it. in the free market, without regulation, all the companies really need to worry about is how else they can bleed a stone.
sometimes when people my age make fun of gen z or gen alpha for being unwilling to work; i think about the lie we've been telling them. because i am not an unusual case. so fucking many of us did it "right". so many of us put our heads down and agreed to the terms and conditions. this was how you do it, right.
almost none of my friends own a house. all of us are in our 30s.
it's apocryphal and likely didn't happen as written, but the myth goes that when Marie Antoinette was told that the general population was starving and had no bread to eat; her chipper reply was so let them eat cake.
there's a 250 foot ferris wheel breaking down on the national mall right now. i can't afford gas, but whatever. our nation's birthday is coming.
i am told to keep trying. do the impossible. solve the puzzle, open the portal. coupon your way to success, high yield savings, skip the coffee break. hustle harder, show up early, leave late. the problem is you, right. it's how you're living life. just keep going!
look forward to the cake.
i get so emotional every time i think about fanfic culture. it's just so beautiful that people are writing and anonymously posting these thousand-word stories about characters we all love and not even getting any money or public fame from it. it's literally just for the love of the game.
shout out to everyone who participates in fanfic culture, be it reading or writing fanfics. you are contributing to such a lovely thing <3
Hello fellow equanimity lover! I need people to talk to about this fic so I must ask what is your favorite chapter so far?
hello! Ramble under the cut I talk a lot
Chapter 4 also holds a special place in my heart <3 the way they orbit and yearn for each other and getting Ryland’s pov was such a treat. He just wanted to hold her hands!! And how he was not even focused on the fact that she had died but that she WAS alive at the same time as him 5 hours ago ahhhh. I’m so obsessed with how Eva is written and am excited and dreading chapter 6
everyone look at her please

to be alone - eva stratt x reader
summary: AU! the sun isn't being eaten by astrophages, Stratt doesn't have the weight of the world on her shoulders, and the most worrying thing you two have to think about is how to end a dinner party soon so you can be alone with each other.
pairing: eva stratt x reader
word count: 2.4k
rating: +18 (not smut, but very suggestive and a lot of sex talk lol so please don't interact if you're a minor)
warnings: whoooole lot of cigarettes these people can and will smoke, alcohol, very touchy-feely, very flirty, and mentions of public sex. ryland grace is in this cause i needed a scapegoat (platonic!), very canon divergent obviously, it's an AU fic. also, eva and reader are married omg that's a first <3 reader wears makeup and skirts in this.
notes: this is based on this lovely ask (which is about this fic of mine, you don't need to read it to understand this one though lol but it is my favorite work of mine!)
Eva Stratt isn’t very fond of crowds, even though you two live in one of the world's most crowded cities, and big dinner parties are not her favorite thing, either, although she’s surprisingly good at them. With a cigarette or two (or three), she can watch you cook and help you light all the candles. It’s common for you to host them; that’s how you two met: a bring-a-friend-nobody-else-knows themed dinner. “I made my peace with them, I knew what I was signing up to,” she tells you over a glass of wine when you ask if she’s not tired of hosting, her hand supporting her chin on the kitchen counter as she watches you stir the pot that contains an unholy amount of vodka sauce.
You chuckle, adding a pinch of salt to another mixture, “We have a way too nice kitchen, baby. It would be terrible not to use it,” she hums, shifting on the chair when you offer her a spoonful of the tiramisu you just made. “Good?” You whisper, leaning over the counter to come closer to her. She nods with a purr, leaning over so she can capture your lips in a soft kiss. “Good?” She asks quietly, breaking from the kiss and focusing on your lips. “Mhm, I might need another taste.”
She taps your face softly, passing her glass for you to drink. She chose the wine, a northern Pinot Grigio, and swore it would pair well with the pasta. Eva, for someone who was once so anti-crowd-in-our-house, sure loves to subtly arrange everything, from the menu to the fresh flowers she so nonchalantly decorated the loft with and the vinyl album she got on the record player because she thought the occasion asked for it.
My fav!
Commander - Eva Stratt x Reader
Prompt: Domestic life with Eva Stratt and the routines that come with living with Earth’s commander.
(TW: smut - minors dni)
(A/N: I’m gonna need all my Eva Stratt lovers to read Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Stat.)
(A/N #2: written on mobile - please ignore any formatting errors until I can fix at a later date :) )
“Eva, I love you, but I cannot do that again,” you say through gasps of air, fighting a losing war not to hurl.
“I told you to take the pills, did I not?”
“You know I can't swallow them! I still take liquid Tylenol for fuck's sake."
Her lips lift into an amused smile at this. "I know. I'm the one who has to buy it for you, dear."
"You should have crushed them up like you do for Salem."
She rolls her eyes. "Next time I will prepare your medication and the cat's at the same time. I can mix yours into a pack of tuna, as well."
"Thank you! That's all I ask." She shakes her head in fake exasperation, but you still catch her smile.
The overall travel experience had been, in your own words, a fucking nightmare. For Eva’s first few months leading the Petrova Taskforce, she was able to commute from your apartment. She’d be gone for a few days at a time, but would always return home for a wash of clothes and a quick fuck, if you were willing.
And you always were.
Loveee
HARNESS YOUR HOPES
Pairing: Eva Stratt x Reader
Synopsis: Eva finds you crying on the stairwell. She responds the best she can, and as always, it isn’t enough.
Contains: Angst, unrequited (?) love, sleep deprivation, crying, “maybe in another life,” slow burn? Idk, it’s kind of funny imo. Stratt character study.
Words: 1186 (unedited)
Notes: first fic kinda nervous… heavily inspired by that one scene in The Fall Guy
Your earphones are turned up just loud enough to soften the research facility.
It’s never quiet here. Beneath the music, a constant subsonic hum from the coolant pumps pulse through the walls. Nothing can drown those out— not even when you’re hiding in the emergency stairwell, knees drawn up to your chest.
Your shift ended hours ago. There was a time you stayed late because the work fascinated you. Astrophages were impossible creatures— violated everything you believed about biology. They drew energy from the sun, slowly diminishing the heat. Every paper answered one question and raised hundreds more.
You loved chasing those questions. And whenever you had an answer, you’d bring it to Stratt.
She never praised people lightly. She’d read through every line in silence, listen to your words with furrowed brows— most of the time she’d find a tiny flaw, a small miscalculation.
The rare times she didn’t, you’d revel in her short approval.
Sometimes, you wonder if you’d still be here if she weren’t. It’s a terrible, fleeting thought that makes your stomach churn. Without you, a quarter of the world’s population would die out in the next 30 years. And Somehow, somewhere along the way, your heart decided to make this about one person.
But Stratt belongs to this mission long before she could ever belong to another person.
You know that. You’ve always known that.
The song changes again, into something embarrassingly sentimental.
You slept maybe four hours a night for weeks. You’ve been camping out in the facility, going home just to change clothes and remind yourself you still have a life outside these walls.
Exhaustion has thinned down your defenses, letting the tender lyrics of unrequited love slip through. That irritating feeling in your chest tightens, and somewhere in between the bridge and the chorus, your eye starts to burn.
You let the tears fall, curling into yourself. It’s strangely relieving, knowing you’re alone in the stairwell, with nothing but the bittersweet melodies accompanying you. You close your eyes and mouth the lines, letting them carry the unexpressed thoughts you’ve spent months pushing back—
“What are you doing?”
Your eyes snap open at the voice, body jerking upright so quickly the earbuds tumble into your lap.
Eva Stratt stands above you, her ginger hair tied loosely behind her shoulders. Her eyes search yours with the same expression she’s worn the first day you’d met her, when she appeared at your apartment. It was a look of quiet confidence and exhaustion, calling you by your full government name, and escorting you into the sleek black government car that carried you to here, the project site.
“Eva.”
Your voice, embarrassingly rough, echoes throughout the metal stairs.
“Uh, just,” you clear your throat, hurriedly wiping your eyes. “Hanging out.”
She glances at the empty space around you.
“By the stairwell?”
“Yes.”
“Alone?”
You look down.
“…Everyone else went home.”
You cringe at how pathetic you must look— with the damp sleeve of your shirt, to the earbuds tangled in your lap. The faint tracks of your tears across your cheeks, beginning to dry.
“Have you been crying?”
“No.”
Warmth creeps up your neck. You don’t even know why you bother lying.
“Clean your face,” she says.
She waits while you rub at your face. Only then does she lower herself onto the step beside you.
“You’re upset.”
It’s not a question. You’re upset. If she’s curious about why, she does not pry immediately.
‘It’s better this way,’ she had said when you had asked her to dinner after another 14-hour day. You cried that day too.
“It’s nothing big.”
“Then it should be easy to explain.”
A pathetic laugh escapes you.
You wish.
“It isn’t.”
“Hm,” she hums. “You went home twice in the last eleven days.”
You blink. How does she know that?
“Your badge logs.”
“You check those?”
“I check everyone’s.”
You nod. Sure. As if she has time to check on everyone’s badge logs.
Hope is a dangerous thing.
“You’re exhausted. You need sleep. I don’t know why you keep refusing to put your health before your work. I need you alive.”
“I’m…”
You frown. The word ‘sorry’ catches in your throat. You’re sick of being sorry.
“…I can’t stop the sun from dimming. I can’t change the laws of physics. I can’t force Tau Ceti to give up its secrets any sooner.”
Eva says nothing.
“The only thing I can do,” you swallow, “is work.”
“You already work.”
“I can work better. Every problem I solve is one less problem at your desk.”
You risk a glance at her.
“…Maybe I can lift some weight off your shoulders.”
You try to laugh as you say it, as if it’s a joke.
It does not land on Eva Stratt.
She stares back at you, her lips tight. During the silence, you find yourself imagining the words she could be swallowing. By now, you should know better.
“You’re doing plenty.”
“I can do more.”
“I don’t expect you to. I already trust your calculations before anyone else’s.”
“Eva…”
“You’ve prevented two major catastrophic errors in the last four months.”
“I don’t want your professional respect.”
The words leave you before you can stop them.
You open your mouth. Close them. Try again.
“I want…”
You falter. Eva waits. When it becomes clear you can't finish the sentence, she does it for you.
“I can’t give you what you want.”
Something stings behind your ribs. It’s familiar.
“…Yeah.” Your mouth feels dry. “Okay. Figures.”
This time, the joke lands. A smile appears on her lips, the lines beside her eyes creasing as she turns her head back at the stairs leading down.
“My life belongs to this project.”
You try to listen to the tone of her voice, searching for an ounce of regret. Of guilt.
“It has to.”
You find neither of those things. Maybe you just don’t know how to. You were always better at solving problems and working on equations than deciphering relationships.
That’s why you’re here.
“If you continue like this, your health will deteriorate. Your work will deteriorate. You will eventually collapse.” Eva looks at you, holding your gaze. “How does that help me?”
God, you’re so sick of feeling sorry.
“I want to matter to you.”
“You do.”
“Not like that.”
“I am sorry,” she says, as gentle as she can. “that those are different things.”
When she sees that you have nothing more to say, she stands up, pulling out her phone from her pocket.
“I’ve called the car around.”
You watch as she heads to the door. Beneath the neon-green exit light the neon-green exit light, her ginger hair loses its warmth, fading into a dull color.
“If you really cared about me,”
Her hand rests against the handle.
“You’d sleep."
The door swings shut with metallic clang. The hum of the pumps comes back, layered with the faint sound of a song seeping out of the earbuds resting in your lap.
And because Eva Stratt told you to sleep, you push the earbuds into your pocket, and start down the stairs.
what's your favorite summerween vibe?
summer camp slashers- friday the 13th, fear street pt 2, sleepaway camp.
seaside town with secrets- jaws, widow's bay
pacific northwest cryptids- gravity falls, x-files
kids on bikes in a spooky small town - it, stranger things
summer fairground spooks - lost boys, us
some other option (write in pls!)
obviously a lot of overlap, but you get it.
ALL OF THEM ALL OF THEM
weir never gave eva stratt a middle name but in my head its maria. eva maria stratt. named after two biblical women, both of whom exist to move a story larger than themselves.
eva, as in eve: the woman at the origin of everything, the one who had to make the choices in the pursuit of knowledge. she who reached for what was necessary and was made a scapegoat for it, carrying the sins of her people.
maria, as in mary: the one who said yes to something incomprehensible and surrendered herself entirely to something larger than her own life. she who gave what she could not get back and interceded for the rest of us anyway. out of a faith and a love for humanity that did not waver.
the film makes a point of eva being a believer, and because she is a believer, the concept of sacrificial lambs is not new to her. she grew up singing about it, small and certain, long before she understood what it would cost. so of course she has a name for what ryland is. and so she sends him, someone she would not otherwise lose, and watches him go. her faith in the mission and her faith in ryland are not separate things. in the end the believer in her turns toward him, and she lets him bear it. she had to watch someone closest to her carry the weight of humanity’s survival. she chose to believe it was enough. and she knows, too, what role that leaves for her.
the scapegoat and the handmaid. the full arc of what it costs a woman to be the reason the world gets to live.
ps i also just really love the implication of eva naming it project hail mary because ave (eva) maria is its latin translation. a prayer, maybe. but more importantly, a testament of her faith in the project and in herself to bring it to fruition.
it’s basically canon to me

Eva hears him coming before he speaks despite the wind blowing through her hair. Most parts of the ship, especially those with metal flooring, echo steps in one way or another.
"Didn't know you smoke."
He stops on her right, mirroring her position and leaning against the railing. It's too early in the afternoon to see a proper sunset just yet, but she enjoys being out and watching the sky nevertheless.
There are a few spots away from crew and people alike, and somehow he still manages to find her in every single one.
"I don't," she responds, blowing smoke out of her mouth, and she feels him rolling his eyes. "Only when I'm stressed."
"When aren't you stressed?"
Grace is close enough for their elbows to bump together, the contact a searing point of warmth, and the corners of her mouth twitch. Sometimes he has a reason for seeking her out, though mostly it's simply for company and for her sake, not that he'd ever say so out loud; but she knows, of course she does.
"Only when I'm extremely stressed, then."
She takes another drag of the cigarette, then lowers her hand and watches the ash disappear in the air before it can hit the water.
"Anyone you need me to kill for you?" he asks lightly, and this time the smile actually reaches her lips. Beside her, he shifts even closer, angling his body to protect her from the wind as much as possible. Eva glances at him from the corner of her eyes, and his grin widens just enough to be noticeable.
"The British and French prime ministers for starters, and probably ten more men that have yet to master the art of taking turns when speaking."
Slowly, some of the tension in her shoulders bleeds away, and she takes a deep breath to dispel some more. It's nothing new, really, but today had been worse than usual and left her with the desire for a strong drink, a cigarette, or both. The promise of fresh air with the latter had won.
Grace hums thoughtfully, as if genuinely considering going on a killing spree for her, and she turns to look at him. He's wearing his hat but not a coat, dressed only in a thick sweatshirt, and while she knows he runs hot, it's definitely too cold for that attire to be comfortable. The frown appears on her face before she can stop it.
"Do you need anything?"
"Mh?"
"I mean, why are you here?"
Meeting her eyes, he hesitates before responding, "I— no particular reason, really. Just needed to get away from everyone for a bit."
Softly bumping their arms together, she tries to adopt the same tone he'd just used.
"Who do you need me to kill?"
Instead of a reply, he reaches for her cigarette, and she easily lets him take it, watching as he inhales deeply enough for his ribs to expand. There's an intimacy to it that neither of them pay any mind to, and it's both surprising and the most normal thing in the world.
"Only when I'm extremely stressed," he remarks before handing it back to her, and the movement leaves their arms pressed together from shoulder to wrist.
Comfortably warm, Eva has to resist the urge to huddle even closer.
It concludes their conversation for the moment, and together they stare out into an empty perturbed sea, the cigarette occasionally changing hands until she eventually stubs it out; there'd already been an ashtray here when she'd first arrived, probably belonging to one of the crew.
(She is capable of nuking the Arctic, but she draws the line at littering.)
"I do mean it," Eva says quietly once the first rays of sunlight make the waves glow orange, "if someone is giving you a hard time, I'll happily throw them off the ship."
After a second, Grace carefully rests his cheek on top of her head, and with a surprised yet relieved sigh, she leans in to lay hers against his shoulder.
The shared warmth seeps through every layer of clothing until it permeates into the marrow of her bones, and it's the most comfortable and relaxed she has been all day. There's a thank you in the gesture, from him, from her, from both of them with a shared sense of responsibility.
"I know," he tells her with a touch of roughness to his voice, and she feels the words more than she can hear them. "I know."
