She is a Haunting!! I love her!!!!
A Room With A View by E.M. Forster (Audiobook) - 3โญ/5
Well this was fun! I'm always down for a comedy of manners and while this is not entirely that, it's drawing from a similar well. And while the love story is fairly simple, the shades of satire are woven through it with great skill. I especially enjoyed the tension between Lucy and her dottering old cousin Charlotte who, as it turns out, may just have had her best interests at heart the whole time. It is interesting to see that this male author rewards his female lead for demanding her independence, despite a few digs at the rich not understanding what independence they already have, and that she is allowed to express to her male suitor that he is treating her like property and that is a good enough reason to end their engagement. Pretty progressive stuff!
But in the end I only found it compelling enough to finish and I don't suspect it will be one that stays with me. I might check out one of the film adaptations but it's not high on my list.
And now we're done with the two books I was reading as we started the new year!
Finished the first book of the year!
Haunted Ever After by Jen DeLuca - 3.25โญ/5
An easy breezy read, and a fun twist on the classic newcomer in a small town romance. Very loveable characters, especially the ghosts, and some solidly spicy scenes at the end. Spoilers below the cut.

Jessica Fletcherโs Facial Expressions Appreciation Post - Part 1
Part 2 / Part 3
Frodo's face was peaceful, the marks of fear and care had left it; but it looked old, old and beautiful, as if the chiselling of the shaping years was now revealed in many fine lines that had before been hidden, though the identity of the face was not changed. Not that Sam Gamgee put it that way to himself. He shook his head, as if finding words useless, and murmured: "I love him. He's like that, and sometimes it shines through, somehow. But I love him, whether or no."

I decided to set my expectations low and have my goal be 50 books this year and I just finished my 46th is think the key to meeting my goals is to violently underestimate myself

The thing about Alex Michaelides is that he's not good enough to be Donna Tartt but not brave enough to be Campy Donna Tartt and so his books just leave you feeling confused.
cant stop thinking abt ursula k. le guinโs essay abt the carrier bag theoryโฆ.. sheโs like, maybe the first human tool was not a weapon, but rather something that holds, a bag, a pouch, a vessel, something for gathering and storing and sharing. letโs shift the narrative of humanity from that of violence to that of safekeeping. and iโm like
and THEN sheโs like, a novel is also a carrier bag. thereโs the Heroโs story, sure, but thereโs room enough in fiction for every experience, for every little thing, and itโs that other story, the life story, that she seeksโฆโฆ. o|-<
turns out the entire essay is online (thanks, Anarchist Library) and i really canโt recommend it enough
*slaps novel on the hood* this bad boy can fit so many facets of human experience in it
