đ Regular reminder that while Hozier has amazing love songs, he is ALSO very outspoken about his leftist politics, specifically anti-fascism, anti-racism, reproductive rights, Palestinian rights and more.
Take Me To Church and Foreignerâs God are scathing critiques of organized religion, specifically the Catholic Church.
Momentâs Silence is about oral sex but itâs ALSO about how that specific sexual act is often distorted to a show of power rather than that of love.
Nina Cried Power is an homage to various civil rights activists from the US and Ireland and a call to follow their path.
Be specifically criticizes anti-migrant policies and Trump and his ilk.
Jackboot Jump is about the global wave of fascism.
Swan Upon Leda is about reproductive rights and the violent colonial oppression of Ireland and Palestine.
Eat Your Young is about the ruinous way the 1%/capitalism prioritizes short-term profit over everything else to the detriment of the youth/99%.
Butchered Tongue is about Irish and other indigenous languages being suppressed and erased by imperial powers.
If any of the above surprised you, please, please delve deeper into Hozierâs music, youâre missing such an important part of his work.

ty for stealing this one much appreciated
people in the notes suggesting it was "improper" for the juror to do this or that it "introduced bias" to the court proceeding đ the ice agent in question accused a moc of assaulting him / resisting arrest. how is the agent being a white supremacist not relevant. what universe are you living in
A juror was held in criminal contempt and fined more than $11k for researching his case online. The man, named as Stephen Miele, told other
As a member of the worldâs SECOND oldest profession, I assure you this is just one of many ways the justice system is systematically fucked up.
For anyone who wants to know how to fact check something you are told while on jury duty without getting fined:
First, you need to understand that the rule that jurors canât just google things is coming from a good place. Like imagine that you are on a jury thatâs considering, say, a medical malpractice lawsuit and one of your fellow jurors comes into the jury room and says to you, âI think the victimâs expert was lying because WebMD totally contradicts everything they said.â
And you might be like, âBut WebMD is notoriously unreliable website and the expert youâre talking about is a researcher from Mayo Clinic.â But this person cannot be swayed.
Like, we can all agree that would be bad.
So even though these rules can contribute to unjust outcomes as in the case above (and seriously, the fact that the defense attorney didnât fact check that is probably grounds for legal malpractice), they also prevent jurors from just looking up bullshit online and taking it more seriously than the actual experts the court has put on. And I think in the era of anti-vaxxers/QAnon/COVID denial/etc., we can all understand why itâs a bad idea to trust that people can tell fact from bullshit online.
So in light of this, how do you as a juror fact check something?
The key here is that you have to ask the court for information. Jurors can ask questions of the court during deliberations, so if something you said sounds off to you, you can ask for more information.
The key term you want to use here is âcredibility.â
The job of a jury is to decide what are called âquestions of fact.â Long before the trial even starts, lawyers will have hashed out all the âquestions of lawâ --- like, what the statute of limitations is; what laws, exactly, were allegedly broken; whether the court youâre in even has jurisdiction; stuff like that. Jurors are responsible for deciding which sideâs version of the facts has more credibility.
For instance, if the prosecutionâs witness says X and the defenseâs witness says Y, the jury is responsible for deciding which is true, X or Y. And you do this by weighing which one is more credible.
So in this case, if the juror had known to, he could have told the judge, âIn order to properly assess the ICE agentâs credibility, I need more information about his tattoo. I have doubts about whether he was telling the truth about it, which would impact how credible I would find his testimony. Can the agent please provide evidence that it really is what he says it is?â
There are a lot of problems with our legal system, and I think one of the biggest is that jurors arenât educated about what they can and canât do. Juries have a lot of power, if (and only if) they know how to use it.
Reblogging for that last post, because frankly, âwhat to do as a jurorâ is one of those things the schools should really be teaching us. Serving on a jury is one of the most powerful rights of citizenship and everyone should be educated in how to exercise it correctly.

Teach boys about periods
My mother also talked about periods to my brothers.
When I first got mine I had terrible cramps. Crippling cramps. I once was camping with my family and a few of my big brotherâs friends when my period came. My cramps were so bad that my mom gave me a full pain killer ( I was 13 and before that she only gave me pills cut in half).
I literally laid down on my parentsâ air mattress and cried in pain for an hour before the pill kicked in.
My brothers friend came in to the big tent and I was just curled up and sobbing. Now, I was quite the tomboy and was known to rough house with my brothers and their friends and made sure I wasnt seen as just âa little girl.â So my brotherâs friend was confused to see me openly weeping in the fetal position (seriously, these were the worst cramps I have had in my life. My vision went white). He asked what was wrong with me.
My big brother stood up immediately and suggested a nice long hike. During this hike I am sure he had a pretty awkward conversation with his friend explaining menstrual cramps, because when they got back the pain pill had (mostly) kicked in and I was sitting up at a table when my brotherâs friend sheepishly asked me if I was feeling better. I said I was better, and he said good.
When we made s'mores that night my brother and his friend kept me well supplied with chocolate.
Making sure sons know as much about periods and menstruation as daughters makes them better brothers, better sons better fathers, and better men. A man that understands a period will not lightly accuse a woman of âbeing on her periodâ if the woman is in an argument.
Raise better sons Teach them about normal bodily functions.
HIT REBLOG PLEASE
this reminds me of that post about that dude who carries tampons with him at the gym because âhalf the world menstruatesâ and âyou will build a whole guest room in case your friends want to stay the night but you wonât carry tampons in case they start their periods unexpectedlyâ or something and honestly they both give me life. <3
I am a 7th grade Science teacher and I regulate menstruation starting Day 1. I introduce them to the 'Self-Care Drawer ' it has deodorant, mini disposable toothbrushes, sunscreen, and a variety of pads. Of course when I hold one up to show it the girls are embarrassed and the boys say "ewww!" I quickly say, "You get twice to react like that to something like this. Once because you are conditioned to react that way and the second because it is habit. After that, it is completely unacceptable."
Of course the boys ask why they have to learn about periods and I inform them that they have mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmothers, and friends who go through this and it's better to learn their struggle and come from a place of empathy. I ask if they ever plan on having girlfriends which, of course, they do. I ask them what do they think would impress their girl more? Them getting grossed out and pulling away when their girlfriend is going through it, or asking what they can do to help? They always answer the second one.
Once that happens there is a beautiful transition in these boys. They start asking questions about the experience and try to understand things they have wondered, but never understood. I support that and their other scientific curiosity all year long. Teach them early.
