drug addicts deserve housing, food, water, and healthcare btw
So! This is a perfect case study in situations where you should be wary of misinformation.
Take a moment and ask yourself, a project like this requires a lot of time, money and dedication of resources, why would scientists dedicate that time to something that could just be done by a tree?
The answer is they wouldn't. So that means this claim requires further investigation!
This project is called LIQUID 3, and it's not meant for cities with wide open spaces, it's meant for cities like Belgrade in Serbia. These cities are densely populated and heavily polluted, to the point where pollution actually chokes out current trees and makes creating green spaces difficult.
Liquid 3 was a PhD scientists answer to these problems. The microalgae tank is intended for spaces where you either:
Don't have enough space to plant full trees, or
Don't have enough time to plant trees and wait for them to grow up.
The tank is extremely efficient when you consider the amount of space needed compared to the amount of CO2 turned into oxygen. The tank can operate throughout the winter. And most importantly, it can be quickly set up in areas that desperately need relief from air pollution NOW not in 10 years when trees are done growing. Children currently suffocating on polluted air can't wait for trees to grow, they need to be taken care of now, and Liquid 3 is one of the ways to take care of them. Depending on the species of microalgea used, a number have shown a pretty amazing capacity to pull heavy metals out of the air which is something trees can get choked up by.
The tanks aren't just tanks either! Liquid 3 have solar panels placed on top, they have lighting and mobile phone charging, and they work as public benches. The designers of it want to encourage green spaces where there's room, but where there isn't room or time, Liquid 3 can step in. Realistically, this isn't a replacement for trees. It's replacing boring metal city benches with new, cooler benches that also clean the air (and have at least some heating during the winter).
Not only that, but the microalgea that grows is native to Serbia and all that microalgea has a ton of great uses! It makes for great fertilizer, compost, wastewater treatment, cleaner biofuels and even for helping create new tanks for further air purification. They only require a quick algae divide once a month, and the produced algae can be carted off to where ever it's needed. This makes them effective solutions for areas that can't sustain complex installations.
So yeah, there's actually quite a lot of places that would like these. Lots of people currently breathing in terrible quality air would much rather have their boring city benches replaced with really fucking cool algae tanks that clean the air and can be used to help create + sustain future green spaces in cities. I dunno about you, but I'd take that over a dumb metal bench any day. Put these at every bus stop and I'd be delighted.
can ppl pls reblog this version
Well damn. I was also like wtf is this stupid slime tank and then I read the rest and my mind got blown

RIP Marjane Satrapi, author of the amazing graphic novels Persepolis about living during the fundamentalist revolution in Iran in the 70’s and 80’s. She also created the animated movie based on the graphic novels, which is where these gifs come from.

Reblogging in honor of Marjane Satrapi, one of THE great graphic novelists. Her comic Persepolis was a crucial text for shaping my belief that comics can deeply explore identity, culture, politics, and history.

sometimes people experiencing psychosis and/or mania will come up to you on the street and talk in confusing or upsetting ways. your job is to either have a regular human-to-human conversation with that person or politely leave. your job is not to call 911. do not call 911. you might kill that person if you call 911.
I don't even have the energy to screenshot and respond to your tags- what the actual fuck is wrong with you? "the cops are scared and rightfully so" "mental health calls are the scariest for cops" OH so this isn't about the safety of psychotic & manic people this is about piggy feelings?
and no, actually, this is not USA specific and no, actually, people from other countries should not ignore this post. police violence and sanism weren't invented in the US and they are certainly not unique to here. if you (or anyone) thinks that this bullshit doesn't happen elsewhere then you are not listening.

you have to be careful reading too many things that are good/smart/well-written bc then you encounter something that isnt and you get confused like ? why didnt they just make this good ? were they stupid
Me, before I saw this: old timey dancing in cartoons has to be over-exaggerated for effect
Me, now: old timey dancing in cartoons had to be toned down to promote a sense of realism because they were too good at it

When i say that anti trans laws will affect cis people too, I’m not saying “we’re all in this equally.
I’m saying it because cis people will never care for us on our own.
It’s not some hippie dippy kumbaya bullshit, it’s strategic and necessary. Sorry it doesn’t pass your purity test!
Some of you only care about winning arguments by submission and fail to consider that an outcome where you have rights but people are clueless liberals is still a marked improvement.
#youre right and you should say it#its the same as when people bring up how patriarchy hurts cis men too#and lefties will sneer at you ‘who cares? it hurts women more!!!’#like thanks dipshit i know that#but some of us are more concerned with getting people to fight on our side in the first place#rather than rejecting any potential ally that doesnt get an A+ on the moral purity test#(hint: when you create barriers to entry to your political movement rather than creating more pathways to join.#you end up with less allies and less power to achieve your goals.)
Peer-review passed, baby
Also, a clueless liberal ally is still on the path to becoming a leftist. Most people don't start out as leftists. It is something people have to become, and you are making it harder by being an ass.
These types of talking points and arguments are an entry point.
Yes, if you've been doing activism or advocacy work for a long time (or just existed as a marginalized person for a long time) it can be frustrating and tedious to hear people talk about the ways systems of oppression impact people in the dominant group, too.
Like it's true but that's not the point right now guys!
Plus, it's just depressing to think that other people won't care about people like you unless it affects them, too. That sucks.
And I get it. You're not wrong.
But here's the thing: If you want people to come to what I call a politics of solidarity --- a politics where we say "I'll stand with you even if our struggles are different because you'll stand with me and we're all in this together" --- then you have to start somewhere.
I believe so strongly and deeply that all our fates are intertwined. That there is no system that hurts only some people without unintended consequences. That there is no way to hurt one group without causing collective injury. That any system that divides us from one another hurts as all, even the people who are supposed to come out ahead.
But if you want people to believe that you have to start somewhere. You have to show them a concrete example of how their lives are made worse by a system that is supposed to hurt "other people."
Eventually, you can try to guide them to the idea that there's no such thing as "other people" actually. But you can't just hit people with that right out the gate.
So yes, tell people that there's no way to try to force trans people out of public life that won't also hurt cis people. Point out that patriarchy causes immense psychological damage to men. Explain that white supremacy is a tool of class control that hurts white people, too.
It's not the point, no. But it's a start.
Was driving with my grandmother and in broken English she says “no eyes… no nose… no face. Don’t trust.” To which I looked around wildly in search of this omen of ill portend.
Cybertruck. It was a cybertruck.
