ok ok i'm thinking color theory here because we know santos is wearing maroon in season 3 and mel has maroon accents with a white shirt
I didn't go back and look at each character in depth so please forgive me if i'm wrong or missing small details (also the note for Mel s2 is one of her socks is blue, but initially it was for my own use so, idk i'm sorry)
The darker the color, I think, the more dire the symbolism is. (Mohan's navy in s1 is lighter than others, indicating that her issue is not as serious. Robby and Langdon's greens are darker than Mel's, etc)
White - Perhaps "white flag" symbolism. Robby in s1 is attempting to work in spite of his trauma. Same with Dana in s2 (working through quitting and coming back after the punch). Perhaps Santos doesn't really fit this narrative in an obvious way? I could shoehorn her arc in s1 since I personally believe that Santos didn't want to be someone who whistleblows her first day (I think this is a contested point, but I really think the text supports that). The red accent might even be the indication that she can't let it sit. Collins is working through the morning sickness and then attempts to work through the miscarriage before Robby sends her home.
Maroon - Maroon seems to act as a foil to Robby specifically (alternate leader), typically by acting as a grounding force until a health issue that Robby has to confront. Collins is clearly the foil to Robby's deteriorating mental health in s1 until he sends her home after the miscarriage Mohan is, in my opinion, very grounded and doing very well as an R4 until her panic attack has Robby attacking her and forces her to doubt herself. Al-Hashimi is also very competent and does well until the health issue comes up and Robby attacks her as well.
Navy - Navy might indicate a struggle to fit into the ED, someone who has to fight to make it work. Langdon's s2 arc is all about struggling to come back and find his place Mohan's s1 arc is about whether she's "too slow" to work in the ED Santos' s2 arc is about being overwhelmed by the paperwork aspect of the ED (especially considering she is still gunning to do two residencies at once) Donnie has an arc in S2, and it's about struggling to be a father to a newborn while working in the ED Lena has an arc in s2, and it's about juggling the ED with being a Death Doola
Green - Hiding a Dark Secret (and/or) attempting to "physician heal thyself." Something they should not be handling alone. Robby's s2 is struggling to hide his suicidal tendencies and wears the dark green sweater until he's no longer hiding it. But he feels like he has a good handle on it (he's going to do it, he just has to get through the day) Langdon's s1 is obviously hiding his drug addiction. He also feels like he has a handle on it (he's convinced himself he's weaning himself off). Mel's s2 is about her no-good, horrible day and having no support system, trying to find a support system. Finding out things are not under control like she thought she had them.
Purple - Indicates that the character will Find Their Place Mel's wearing purple in s1 and finds that she does belong in the ED by the end of the MCE. Javadi's wearing purple in s2, and she realizes she wants to go into psychiatry. Mateo's wearing purple in s2, and he says that he's in med school and says he belongs on night shift.
Gray/Tan - Indicates someone who is competent and compassionate, if a little disillusioned with it all. Interestingly, a lot of characters wear grey in both seasons. See McKay, Whitaker, Perlah, etc.
Black - Lone Wolf indicator. I don't care to go into it, I think it's obvious.
Conclusion: Mel is attempting to work through the trauma of feeling displaced and needing a support system (white shirt). She will also have minor moments of being a foil to Robby's leadership (maroon accents), but Santos will bear the full brunt of this role in s3.
Moooooooooore DnD Pitt characters !!
Fascinating how what's considered feminine and what's considered masculine can change over time. The rebranding of being a horse girl into being a stereotypical feminine girly trait needs to be studied.
Look at classic children's novels. As recently as the 50s and early 60s, being obsessed with horses as a girl was depicted as strange and tomboyish, and the very concept of being obsessed with horses from early childhood and loving toy horses and desperately wanting your own horse being a "little girl thing" and not a "little boy thing" would send someone from the 1800s and earlier into a coma.
There's maybe a point to be made here somewhere about how when keeping and riding horses stopped being necessary to the functioning of society and became a more "frivolous" thing, it was rapidly rebranded as silly and girly and for women, but what do I know.
i wrote a paper in my masculinity studies class in college about this exact phenomenon, specifically about how high heeled shoes started as a practical way for Persian cavalry to keep their feet on their stirrups, then likely due to that association, became a popular fashion item and status symbol among the upper classes of Europe, before the Great Male Renunciation of the 18th-19th centuries, when men started shunning opulence in favor of utility, leaving them as a fashion item for women instead.
I've joked that the two genders are Aesthetic and Utility before but thats just kinda the case

I love it when I make a harmless post on this app abt a mel butch hc that I have and i get ridiculed by certain kingdns that i have internalized misogyny bc “mel doesn’t need to wear makeup to be femme” nd that im just using Mel as a self insert bc she obviously into men then I check out their page and its them saying kingdon gives them major butchfemme vibes 🙃 #OHOKAY
i cant find my old post but last year when i was into kingdon even i had to admit i couldnt delude myself into hitting kingdon with the butchfemme beam because langdon simply does not give butch at ALL like hes the most man man to ever man. everything about his character oozes cis man with cis man privilege going through life as a cis man </3 i could never put frank langdon in the same realm as butches </3
thinking about how king and santos are 2 sides of the same coin. king grew up with protecting and caring for her sister her main goal in life, because no one else would do it. santos grew up with protecting herself her main goal in life, because no one else would do it. king is learning to be sure and strong and steady because her previous purpose required her to be soft. santos is learning to be gentle and polite and restrained because her previous purpose required her to be harsh. both of them are desperate for friendship, for connection, to be liked, but they stumble with their interactions too much for it to be easy
the came back wrong trope except its just season seven emily prentiss
really want to read into this miniscule interaction but not quite sure the starting point
