i always fall for opening the comments section and then go ahhh right i forgot. the concept of nuance and non-universal experiences just doesn't exist to some people

i know the caretaker plot-line is meant to reflect mel and her feelings towards being her sister’s caretaker but the fact she gets so upset at a family member abandoning her disabled mother and her general upset at broken families and also her disdain of shouting makes me wonder if her father abandoned their family when becca’s symptoms became too much for him to handle? a childhood of arguing parents trying to navigate all aspects of their childs disability and how it affects them with dad ultimately leaving and mom dying a few years later.

thinking about this again bc I find this interaction soooo interesting. mel is doing her usual thing when she disagrees with someone— laying out the facts. langdon cuts her off with his own opinion— which is based entirely in how he feels about the situation. mel would usually object to this. but she doesn’t. why?

i think this meant to be him ‘snapping’ at her (of which he apologies for later) and ive been viewing/thinking about this clip in relation to how she deals with hostile situations such as arguments/shouting. these situations are uncomfortable for her to witness so to me it reads as her shutting down for a second to not make it worse but remembers langdon has never been mean to be before so she takes a breath before continuing. also feels like some minor parallel to how she snapped at becca merely hours earlier ?
