(cw: sexual assault) the pedophile -as it is understood outside of academic circles- is a mythical creature. the idea that a complete stranger who kidnaps and sexually assaults kids is their biggest threat is absolutely insane; not one case of CSA (child sexual assault) in a hundred looks like that. CSA is committed almost uniformly by adults in a preestablished position of authority (such as family, family friends, clergy, or teachers) and in a way that a victim who doesn't know what sexual assault looks like will be left unsure what happened to them. without knowing concretely how sex and sexuality works, would you be able to tell the difference between molestation and the various other forms of unwanted physical touch and abuse kids are regularly subjected to? would it even seem that different? but parenthood and the submission of youth to adults as institutions are threatened by the reality of CSA. adults need to justify their ownership of children through an imagined outside threat constantly held at bay through their diligence. the truth - that putting yourself in such a position of authority over children directly enables abuse (including sexual abuse) - is thrown aside.
i don’t know where the post this makes me think of is, but the general idea of it was that children aren’t properly taught how consent works, because if they did have a functioning framework to understand all the ways in which they’re exploited by adults—and continue to be exploited as adults, in different ways!—it would pose a serious threat to the social order, which is, i think, highly relevant here
favorite thing ever is leaving this gif in Ao3 comment sections
because A: a shocking amount of people don't know abt the 'img src=' trick to add images into comment sections, and B: well over half of the authors seem to really enjoy the sentiment
and this post has served its purposw
Here is your mission.
TSLA hit its all time high of $488.50 on 15 DEC 2024. To reach of a price of $114.00 would be a 76.7% drop. That's huge, right?
Yeah well, when I checked the price just now (12 MAR 2025 @ 1:31 PM EDT), TSLA is currently trading at $250.85. That's down 48.6% from the high.
Babes, we're already nearly two-thirds of the way there.
TSLA $114.00. I believe this is where I say 'like to charge, reblog to cast.'
I am spoiling the live action Lilo & Stitch. And I am doing it up front and plainly.
Do not fucking see this movie. Do not waste your money on this. Period.
They made Nani give Lilo up to the American government. They made Nani LEAVE Hawaii and pursue being a marine biologist. They made a native Hawaiian character give up her sibling to pursue a dream that she originally did not have. This is imperialist propaganda at its FINEST.
The original fucking movie is about family staying together. It's about indigenous people being able to stay with each other and stay in their home and be together! That's the whole fucking point! Nani is Lilo's last living relative on her homeland—it is jarring, it is disgusting and disturbing that Nani would not only leave her last blood relative alone, give her up to the very government that is harming native Hawaiians TODAY, but also travel to the "mainland" for her dream!
Not to mention, Nani's actress isn't fucking Hawaiian. She's much paler in photos and real life. They fucking darkened her for this movie.
Don't even get me started on the transgender subtext of Pleakley's "human" disguise from the original movie being completely erased in favor of him being played by a regular ass white man. Jumba doesn't have his accent, they made him more villainous, and his "human" disguise is a non-fat white man—which part of his original joke, I know, is that he was bigger and was more clumsy in the movie because of his size, but to have the main shape of his character completely removed is also fucking weird.
This live action movie is a desecration to the original. I encourage you to not see it, please. Don't give Disney any of your money on this one. Just watch the original. Please just watch the original.
The new message in the live action movie is disturbing and gross.
This is one of the most disrespectful live actions I've seen and heard of. I implore you to not watch it.

American healthcare is bad and expensive. It is atrocious and it bankrupts you. You will have to wait 8+ months to see a specialist only for that specialist to look at you for 5 minutes, say there is nothing wrong with you and decline further testing. God forbid you are AFAB or a person of color or gender nonconforming or look like a ‘druggie’ to the staff, they will treat you like something they scraped off the bottom of their shoe and bill you $3000 for the pleasure of being disrespected.
He's supposed to be invincible - DC X DP
Just something random that came to my mind.
So, Danny ends up being adopted/fostered by Bruce just months before Damian arrives at the manor, the how and why is your choice, but the GIW is still a threat.
Now, Danny catches Damian attacking Tim the first time and instead of telling the rest of the family or scolding Damian, he went lik:
“You haven't even defeated me, and you think you have a right to attack Tim? Get in line, kid.”
And so Damian understands that to get the right to fight against Tim, he needs to get rid of Danny first. Climb the power pyramid, if you will. And so, Damian starts his assassination attempts against Danny.
(This is my first time writing for either DP or DC but you know, I loved the prompt so much I wanted to give it a crack!)
“You haven't even defeated me, and you think you have a right to attack Tim? Get in line, kid.”
The words echoed in his mind, mocking and sarcastic, burning with derision, but Damian was forced to admit that he had been… hasty. Reckless, even. Whilst eliminating Drake would certainly help establish himself as Father's true and only heir, there was clearly a hierarchy to things.
Although he was the blood son - the true son! - in terms of age and seniority, it was clear there was a pecking order. And as the youngest, and the newest to the family - technically speaking - he was at the bottom. In the League, killing Drake would allow him to take his position in the hierarchy by demonstrating that he was superior to him.
Clearly that was not the case here. Clearly, if he wanted to assume his rightful place, he would have to work his way up. He could work with that.
this one liberal dude on twitter made the (correct) take that parents have overwhelming power over their kids and very often abuse it and restrict children's rights and he was ratio'd by conservatives, communists and liberals alike who made comments like "my kids will have rights when they pay the bills" to "aw are you upset mom and dad didn't you get you a lega set for christmas". way to prove his point lol! any criticism of the power dynamics adults and particularly parents have over kids and how it is often used to abuse kids or refuse to let them exist as themselves is drowned in mockery and the idea that parents have absolute authority over children and that any less than that is actually spoiling them.
i said it before: people only care about Children as an ideal. as property. as something that is Innocent and deserving protection From Evil Traffickers but also something Dumb that barely deserves the status of human with autonomy. and its fucking wild how even the staunchest communists think of this as normal, and how people refuse to understand that this dynamic is how kids are emotionally, physically and sexually abused, as well as robbed of their voices and too scared/ashamed to talk about it.
it's worth saying this dude is the parent of a now adult trans girl, and his reflections absolutely come from parenting as well as how he was expected to behave as the father of a trans daughter, how much power he had over her treatment and the refusal of doctors and teachers to listen to her and going over her head to him so they could misgender her and make him consent to conversion therapy.
he did not do these things, but the expectation and judgement that he as a parent was supposed to take away her rights and the sheer power he had over her as a minor made him reflect a lot. and now people are mocking him for sharing this reflection, even as black kids are killed or sent into the school to prison pipeline, as disabled kids are refused humanity, as parents kill their kids to spite their divorced spouses, as trans kids get their healthcare revoked, as migrant kids remain locked in cages. even as these same people panic over child trafficking and pedophile sex rings and refuse to admit how much csa and abuse is from family members.
The fact that this view is so rare despite also being, in my view, extremely obvious is I think a reflection of how strongly incentives mediate our beliefs. My experience growing up was that by six years old every single person I knew had developed a thorough class consciousness for the "child" class and as I've gotten older, everyone I know who's become a parent has forgotten it. Because ya know, it's not in their interests any more. The authoritarian structure of the parent/child relationship should also be the prototype for how sociological systems replicate, because parenting styles are so directly passed down generationally.
"empowering women by sending katy perry to space for 2 minutes" shut the fuck up. samantha cristoforetti was the first female commander of the international space station and she became an astronaut because of star trek. and there is a real chance she is a kirk/spock shipper

If OTW weren’t around, this wouldn’t be “scaremongering”: It would be the inescapable status quo.
The people who believe this crap are the anti-vaxxers of fandom.
Oh god. They kind of are, aren’t they?
I’d go bigger and just say that they’re the conservatives/reactionaries of fandom–or, to frame it differently, this is how conservative and authoritarian ideologies express themselves in the context of Fandom.
my opinion on AO3 is that it’s an important asset but i still find it scummy that they’ll ask for money but when their users try to ask for money they slam them with their non-monetization rules. Like Anne Rice is dead and this isn’t the 90s anymore, people are making money from fandom please catch up with the times.
I think you’ve misunderstood:
AO3 was built by a bunch of us with our free donated labor for the purpose of being a space free from commercial spam.
It’s not a public service. It was built by us to house the type of fandom culture we liked.
People who want to do fandom differently, including making money, are welcome to go build their own site with their own money or their own donated labor.
AO3 does not forbid commercial links because they think fans making money from fanworks is immoral but them making money (to run the damn site) is fine.
AO3 forbids commercial links because they are making a very specific claim about the legality of fanworks, and that claim is about noncommercial fanworks.
They’re not saying that commercialized fanworks are against the law. They’re just not prepared to host them–nor defend them in court.
In case people missed it: The OTW will not honor DMCA takedown orders that are basically, “I own X work and that’s a fanfic of it, and that’s copyright infringement so make it go away.”
The OTW says, lolnope, we don’t think that’s copyright infringement. If you disagree, sue us.
The OTW says: Disney - we will not remove explicit Mandalorian fanfic. Rowling, Warner Bros - we will not remove trans Harry Potter fanfic. Gabaldon - we are not removing Outlander fanfic no matter how much you think it’s illegal or a personal violation. Yarbro, if someone puts “The Adventure of the Gentleman in Black” on AO3, you will need to actually take it to trial to (try to) get it removed; none of this C&D order followed by fans caving because they can’t afford a lawyer.
…So far, nobody has sued them. (This is, in my mind, the strongest proof we have that fanfic is not copyright infringement. In 13 years, not a single person or company has scrounged up a lawyer and filed a lawsuit against AO3/the OTW for hosting fanworks.)
But they’re not willing to put themselves on the line for commercial works. Those get considered differently in copyright law. They’re not always infringing - there’s a whole history of parody books & songs to prove that - but the OTW is not dealing with them.
The OTW does not care if fans are making money. The OTW cares if fans making money interfere with its legal defense of its archive.
If you are not a copyright lawyer, your opinion about the situation is not going to be considered.
Also, it wasn’t just Anne Rice coming after fandom in the 90s as though this is some relic holdover terror from ancient history.
Events like Strikethrough and Boldthrough happened in the early to mid-2000s. It felt like you’d wake up every day in 2007 and find another fandom group on LJ gone. (And not just fandom groups either, important community groups for education and trauma survival were also wiped out in those purges as well.)
And while not exactly the same, Yahoo Groups–and yes Yahoo Groups was a major online fandom hub at one point–were deleted as late as 2019 with very little warning, leaving a lot of older fandom groups scrambling to back up decades worth of content.
I might be projecting, but Fanfic.net seems to be wobbling too. It wouldn’t surprise me to find out they go under in the next few years despite performing similar purges of adult content in 2012 and allowing for obnoxious ads, which made the site unusable on mobile unless you wanted to see an ad what felt like every couple of paragraphs. (It might be better now, I haven’t checked in a while.)
It has only been in very recent memory that fandom has gained any sort of foothold that isn’t poised directly over a precarious faultline that could at any moment open up and swallow entire communities whole, and a huge part of that is the volunteers at Ao3 who decided to play chicken with the likes of Anne Rice and won.
Ao3 at its core was and is built by fandom. Some people don’t like it and that’s fine, but to even suggest that the volunteers are lounging around eating peeled grapes and lighting cigars with hundred dollar bills making bank through fraud while fanfic authors are left out in the cold is beyond the scope of laughable.
It’s cute how people think that Anne Rice was the only one who did this. Look at what Disney does to people who they think are making money off fanworks (lightning Mcqueen dude on tiktok, for example). (now what really would be fun is if they found a way to claim that people who make money from their 50 minute long youtube vids about their Marvel predicitons (which IS FANFIC it’s just that it’s mostly dudes) are making money from thier IP. Because they are.)
IIRC, Anne McCaffrey, J. Michael Straczynski, George R.R. Martin and Marion Zimmer Bradley, among others, have also thrown hissy fits over fanworks (MZB possibly with some rational grounds for it, since I seem to recall she actually did get caught up in a legal snafu involving a fan who claimed she’d stolen their ideas.)
The MZB situation is… uh… complex, to say the least. Nobody agrees what happened, but it appears MZB’s people approached a fan about using her stuff in exchange for a thank you, and the fan wanted money and actual credit as a writer. (According to the fan, they then threatened her to shut her up, which makes some sense in the context of MZB being post stroke and hiding it at the time.) Basically, it was some kind of clusterfuck that probably involved covering up that MZB was no longer able to write.
Ngl the people who hate on AO3 *specifically* for the fact that they do fundraising and claim that they all must be rolling in money? They come off to me like the Fox News of Fandom.
Also we go through this *every year* and at this point it just feels like willful and malicious ignorance.
Also, Ao3 is one of the highest-visited sites in the WORLD.
AO3 experiences millions of page views daily, with peak days reaching close to 70 million page views, particularly on weekends.
JSTOR gets about 150,000 a month.
Ao3 has millions per day.
It has a tagging/metadata system and code that is the envy of databases worldwide, including academic databases.
They keep all those fics and podfic audio files and uploaded art on their server space, as well as which pieces are held in copyright to which author pennames, and ensure the security of this data to some of the highest standards in cybersecurity.
All of that requires a truly massive amount of server space. Server space is fucking expensive.
They also keep some very excellent lawyers on retainer in case anyone ever decides that they want to take this game of chicken to court. By hosting your fic, the OTW says, “we will go to bat FOR YOU and pay for the legal shit ourselves, it will not cost you a single dime to defend your work, even if you end up facing off against one of the creative giants like the fucking Walt Disney Company. We still have your back.”
And the only reason they can do this is because NO ONE IS MAKING MONEY on their archive. (You wanna make money elsewhere? A ko-fi, a patreon, selling fanart at cons, writing a fic and scrubbing off the serial numbers and then publishing? Ao3 has no problem with that, because at that juncture, the risk is on YOU. While it’s on their archive, the risk is on THEM, and they are not willing to risk the entire archive because you wanted to put up a link.)
That’s where the money goes.
Servers and lawyers.
The OTW is a volunteer organization. No one gets paid.
If you don’t like it, absolutely no one is forcing you to use it or read anything on it. But those of us who have been around a while remember how scary it was in fandom before the Archive, and not a day goes by that I’m not grateful for it.
