the
it looks and acts like the living embodiment of an exclamation point and well. that is its right as a creature on this earth but i do think it should consider perhaps calming down, like a little
the Hail Mary is the opposite of idiot-proof. she's built for very smart people to be able to do Whatever They Need with every tool they have in order to achieve their goals. fucking with the centrifuge settings? i'll warn you that you're messing with important stuff but go right ahead man. ripping up the floor panels and pulling out the electricals to make a really unsafe extension cord? sure why not. pop off the fucking fuel tanks? yeah ok you're the most qualified person here and if you say you need to do that who am i to argue. i love the utter lack of guardrails on everything
reading the bit where graces just goes, all casual, oh yeah we don't even have the heroin bc i chucked it during the starvation bit, and having several thoughts in my head:
man IS NOT handling this well no matter how much he's loving the terra's grace crew.
there is NO way the crew isn't compiling a list of uh-ohs, there's something going on here (re: ha-eun seeing his shivering, joey's careful watching during the medication discussion, ect). im sure the medical team is also holding each other by the scruff to stop them from going grace we need to discuss your diet plan
and also???? does that mean he ALSO chucked yao's gun? OH man, no one think about the implications that he was literally surrounded by means of going out easier while also suffering the very thing the phm crew was trying to avoid for an extended about of time
YEAH. YEAH. YEAH. The various crew members seeing bits of Grace's trauma shine through and running crying to Ha-Eun going YOU HAVE TO HELP HIM PLEEEEAAAASE WE LOVE HIM SO MUCH AND HE'S SO CLEARLY HURTING
But they're not going to force him into therapy. He has to ask for it on his own terms. Something's going to have to break a little further for him to be willing to do that.
But also yeah. I think about the gun and the heroin all the time. I think Grace was terrified of both of those items. I also think he kept them around for longer than he probably should have because of the "what if I need them for some reason" anxiety of the nitrogen was useful so maybe these will be too. But then he had a breakdown at some point right around when the first bit of crazies from being stuck in a small metal box in space for months and months hit and he experienced a fleeting moment of suicidal ideation, which caused just an absolute panic attack because he wants so badly to live and now he knows that he can't trust his brain and he flings them out the airlock in that panic.
So yeah he was being very flippant in that conversation with Marcus and Joey, because he cannot be serious about things that upset him for even One Second or he will Explode (<- guy with normal coping mechanisms that function just fine all the time don't worry about it no prablem)

i can’t get over how crazy much ado is sometimes. it feels like a deconstruction of shakespeare’s other comedies when you look at how quick and lovesick and beautiful hero and claudio are and how well they fit the script of just classic young lovers, things like how hero is one of the only characters to speak in verse, the way claudio praises her to all his friends etc. and then how in the middle of the play the script is completely flipped. now hero is in danger because of what claudio believes and no one can help her. and suddenly the love story shatters because the same willingness claudio has to fall in love with her at first sight is the same willingness he has to believe a baseless accusation and the love story starts to descend into horror because there’s no legal course of action hero can appeal to her and her own father insults and disowns her at her wedding and she’s quite literally left for dead fainting on the ground with her father saying let her die, what is it to me? it’s insane because like 30 minutes before it’s just a happy comedy love story but shakespeare shows a real darkness to the genre because claudio may think he loves her but when it comes down to it he will never trust her. her word isn’t good enough. no one is going to listen to the woman
Head in my hands. Do me a favor. Promise me that if you are ever getting read to by a child who is struggling with literacy, you won't jump straight to "tell them the word as soon as they pause or stumble over it, let them repeat it, and move on". Unless this is a really weird word that doesn't follow a teachable pattern, in which case you can demonstrate pronunciation and let the kid practice a few times, try to take the time to walk the kid through decoding the word! The goal is not to get the child to correctly speak the word out loud. The goal is for the child to practice the skill of decoding written language. Repeating a spoken word is easy. Actually reading the word by decoding the sounds the letters make is not easy, which is why they need to practice.
Someone to be brave for.

I think the solution to my chapter 10 woes is to make it two chapters and add a scene to both halves. Tonally and pacing-wise it makes the most sense to do it that way. But the problem *there* is that I know exactly what scene I would add to the second half but I'm not even finished with one of the two scenes that would be in the first half, and it has to be done by Friday (with the disclaimer that yes it would be fine if i had to delay a chapter but i dont *want* to)
Also if I *dont* add a scene to what would then be chapter 10, it would only be 6000 words. Which is fine. Just shorter than all of the chapters around it while also not hitting as hard as them, which is why I'd want to add a scene, which aauayggahh
Welcome back to the glass weevil zone.
Hello!! This is probably going to be a little rambling because I love Terra’s Grace and all the thought you’ve put into world building so so much. I don’t even know if I subscribed bc I just keep the tab open on my laptop and my phone and refresh it to see if it’s updated lol.
Anyway! I just wanted to say there was a little tidbit earlier on where Grace has a brief flash of fear where he’s worried they’re going to force him to go back to Earth and it has haunted meeee. It haunts me!! I think about it at least once a chapter, and every single time that Grace feels mistrustful of the ship’s crew like. Maybe it’s just bc that fear appeals to my tastes in particular and is so visceral, but it feels like it underpins so so much of Grace’s interactions with the crew and he has absolutely no idea that’s like. A fundamental belief he’s holding.
Love this fic love you byeee!!!
AHHHH thank you so much!!!!! Pffft I love that you just have the tab open, that's delightful. It does have a regular Friday update schedule! So that is when refreshing will yield results lol <3
and YEAAAAH ough I love knowing that moment of fear stood out to you. That is the undercurrent of the entire fic, honestly. Grace adores these humans and he is so happy they're here and he is grateful everything they're giving him and he claims several times to trust them, but he is in complete denial of one very important fact. They absolutely terrify him. And he has no idea how to fix that.
Thank youuuuu! <3
I guess this is more expressing excitement than a question, but wanted to say that all the great Terra’s Grace meta on here has me pondering again how much I love your take on Grace’s thoughts about the fact that he didn’t volunteer for the mission, and that he consciously considers it the brave thing to never ever tell anyone what actually happened, and is treating keeping the secret as a kind of penance for what happened there. And it is making me SO excited to see your take on Stratt and what kind of closure Grace may or may not be able to get about her. I know we’re not touching Stratt yet in this fic with a ten foot pole — Grace is not mentally prepared to face his interpersonal trauma final boss yet — but the way she necessarily haunts the story and Grace’s own thinking about his refusal to volunteer, as the person who asked him to/forced him, definitely has her on my brain from time to time, and I am SO curious to see where you may go with their relationship and both their reads on what it was/is. Because like, I love that the only way Grace can even be in this position is because he and Stratt both look at what went down in those days before launch and decided that the best thing to do about the worst thing they’ve done is to never, ever tell anyone, and then someday die with the secret. I’ve seen some fics set in worlds where Stratt did eventually publicly confess to forcing Grace to go, which is, ironically, convenient for a Grace who’s reuniting with humanity and doesn’t have to carry that as a secret, but functionally I could only see her being motivated to do that as a way to alleviate her own guilt (given that she’d have no way of knowing that Grace would ever see another human again), and I’ve always found that to be really, really unlikely where canon is concerned. She promised him statues & the reputation of a hero as some kind of recompense for her betrayal, knowing it wasn’t much but it was the thing she could do that she was willing to, so I really don’t see her ever being the one to present Grace as anyone besides someone who nobly volunteered for the mission (yet another reason that I LOVE that this is also a post-canon world shaped by the way someone else picked up the primary role of preserving Grace’s memory). Like, I do not see Stratt forcing Grace to go as at all morally equivalent to Grace trying to refuse, but I am not immune to what feel like possibly parallel thought processes in which both of them are keeping it a secret from the rest of humanity as a kind of recompense for what they did/said there. Wildly convergent behavior for two people who were on opposite sides of that situation. Just, generally, Grace’s thought processes are very cool and painful and interesting to ponder how influenced they still are by the way that choice was framed and presented to him by the primary person who did so.
>:3
I haven't forgotten about Stratt, believe me. I have nothing really to add to this excellent meta/analysis, just know that I am rolling it around in my mind like a giant marble and I am VERY excited to share chapter 10 (even if it is still kicking my whole ass rn)
Hello! Possibly somewhat random Terra's Grace question, but the Aviary having a mascot/thoughts in general about culture on post-Taumoeba Earth in the most recent chapter reminded me that I was curious whether you had any thoughts on what the Terra's Grace mission patches might contain/look like? I went down a bit of a rabbit hole about space mission patches recently, and was reminded that it's usually the crew of the mission directing the design even if they're working with a graphic artist to realize it, and it is. So interesting to me, imagining ways this crew might try to condense all the things their mission is visually. Would they include the ship itself? Presumably they don't actually know what Erid looks like, but they could depict the two stars? I can't help smiling over like, a cute depiction of a Taumoeba as the symbol of the thing that saved them/accomplishment of the guy the ship is named after and also the thing they're offering to their neighbors. Or maybe whatever they used to actually contain/deliver the Taumoeba would be a famous and visually iconic piece of tech to this version of Earth? I feel like there are many more symbolic directions they could've gone with the whole 'First Ever Planned Interplanetary Diplomacy' mission, though. Just something I've been having some fun turning over in my mind, lately.
:D WHAT A GOOD QUESTION especially because I have a very specific answer!
So, there *is* no one single mission logo for the Terra's Grace. The mission patch for each crew member's uniform is a little different, but they are all embroidered images of Earth/the blue marble from different angles. No two patches are alike, and they were assigned randomly, not centering where the crew member is from or anything. No single perspective takes precedence. Every part of Earth gets to shine on someone's patch. The embroidery is textured/raised enough to be perceivable by Eridians. "Terra's Grace" is written around the outside as black text in a gold halo. On a screen, the mission logo would be a gif that slowly rotates to show every part of Earth. If it was printed, it would be captured at a random moment in that rotation.
It's not terribly artistic or cleverly symbolic. It's just Earth. Just Terra, with no piece of her prioritized over any other piece of her. (You can see Imara and Yiming's patches in the art I've posted of them!)
Thank you for asking! I love getting to talk about the thoughts behind some of the things in this story that don't really get the spotlight on-page because it's plenty long as it is, lol. <3

22 year old: I'm 22
High schooler: and that's okay! It's crazy that you haven't withered up and died yet
hi! im reading your terra grace fic, and i'm not sure if maybe you've addressed this before or not, but am i reading it when it seems like rocky doesn't know about grace's being forced onto the hail mary? or has he just not clocked that That is the specific issue at hand? im LOVING this fic and your characterizations of everyone, and ofc all of the crew!! tysm for all the effort youve put into this, it absolutely reads how much you love and believe in the good in people <3
You are indeed reading it correctly! Grace in The Chronicles of Terra's Grace has told absolutely nobody in the world that he was forced onto the mission. It kind of floats by in the background of the whole fic before being made a bit more explicit in chapter 8. Not, it seems, as obvious as I had thought I was making it 😅 you are not alone in being unsure/startled by it in the more recent chapters! I think Grace and I both fell into the trap where something seemed so obvious to us that we just kinda forgot to ever mention it explicitly in the narration. But I'm not mad that it turned out that way. I think it's prompting some challenges to assumptions that a lot of the fandom makes about Grace's character and his and Rocky's relationship, and I do love to challenge an assumption.
But yeah. My Grace fully intends to take that secret with him to the grave. Who would it help to say it out loud? Rocky told him once "You and me are good people [for being willing to die for other people]". How could Grace possibly shatter that fundamental belief that Rocky has in him, especially after proving to himself and Stratt and the universe that he HAS changed and he IS a good person now and he is no longer a coward?
And that is the other thing: he's brave now. Surely the brave thing to do is to bite his tongue and hold that secret in and never risk hurting Rocky with it or risk receiving any compassion for it (I talked more about that fear of kindness in an ask I answered last night). Surely bravery looks like bottling up a major trauma because it's something he's ashamed of. He's never going to be cowardly enough to break down and beg for forgiveness and reassurance for choosing to doom his entire species. That's not who he is anymore. He's changed. He's *brave* now. He's a good person.
That is all, of course, his own deeply broken and traumatized self-perception speaking. Crucially, he is wrong.
Also ;-; thank you so much for your kind words about the story! I am putting so much thought and effort into it, and I am so grateful and happy that it's all being appreciated and enjoyed. I do believe in the good in people and I am pouring my love for humanity into every word of the fic <3
(We're talking about This Fic Right Here btw)
