Hey i’m a fashion design student so i have tons and tons of pdfs and docs with basic sewing techniques, pattern how-tos, and resources for fabric and trims. I’ve compiled it all into a shareable folder for anyone who wants to look into sewing and making their own clothing. I’ll be adding to this folder whenever i come across new resources
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16uhmMb8kE4P_vOSycr6XSa9zpmDijZSd?usp=sharing
Updated just now with new hand sewing resources (mainly buttonholes) and textbook pdfs on fashion history, fashion illustration, and thinking through designs!
ok so, I approached my local library with a proposal to donate a mural as a way to A: build portfolio/gain practical experience and B: give back to a beloved public institution. The director was very enthusiastic about it and i've been working on it since the beginning of March. Come with me as I endeavor to paint what is in all honesty an excessive amount of birds
I wanted the birds to look like they were actually in the space so first thing after doing the draft was to do a lighting study
after that I covered the walls in letters in lieu of a projector/vr headset bc i have neither of those :) Then i take a picture of the section of wall and superimpose the lineart over top of it so I can pencil in the lines
et voila
and that was a whole week on it's own so next comes the paintin' >:)
She got the idea for the study while walking with her advisor at Stanford to discuss her thesis topic, and the paper she eventually published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology in 2014 is sharp enough that it should have ended the seated meeting on the day it came out.
She ran 4 experiments on 176 people. Same person tested twice. Once sitting, once walking. The creativity tasks were the standard ones psychologists have used for decades to measure how good a brain is at generating novel useful ideas.
81% of participants in the first experiment produced more creative ideas while walking than while sitting. In the second experiment, 88%. In the third, 100%. Every single person walked into a more creative version of themselves. On average, people generated 60% more novel useful ideas the moment their legs started moving.
The skeptical question is the obvious one. Maybe it was the fresh air. Maybe it was the scenery passing by. Maybe it was the change of environment doing the work, not the walking itself.
Oppezzo killed every one of those explanations with one experimental decision. She put people on a treadmill facing a blank wall. No scenery. No fresh air. No environmental change. Just legs moving in place while staring at white drywall. The 60% boost held.
Then she ran the experiment that closed the case completely. She took participants outside in two conditions. Half of them walked through a Stanford courtyard. The other half were pushed through the exact same courtyard in a wheelchair. Same outdoor stimulation. Same scenery passing at the same speed. The only difference was whether the legs were moving.
The walkers produced dramatically more novel high-quality ideas than the wheelchair group. The outdoors did almost nothing on its own. The walking did everything.
She also tested the opposite kind of thinking. Convergent thinking. The kind where there is one right answer and you have to narrow down to it. Word puzzles where 3 words share a hidden fourth word that connects them. The seated participants did slightly better on these. Walkers got slightly worse.
Walking is not a general intelligence enhancer. It does one specific thing. It opens up the divergent search inside your brain. The part that generates options. The part that produces unexpected connections. The part that takes a problem and finds five ways into it instead of one.
When you need to converge on the single right answer, sit down. When you need to find the answer in the first place, get up.
The mechanism is now well understood. Walking selectively activates what neuroscientists call the default mode network, the system inside your brain that runs when you are not consciously focused on anything. The DMN is where mind-wandering happens. Where memories cross-reference each other. Where ideas that have been sitting in separate folders inside your head finally bump into each other.
When you sit at a desk and force yourself to concentrate, you suppress the DMN. When you walk at a natural pace, the executive part of your brain gets just busy enough handling the walking that the DMN comes online and starts doing the work that focus was blocking.
The most useful finding in the entire paper is the one almost nobody quotes. The boost did not turn off the moment people stopped walking. Participants who walked first and then sat back down stayed elevated. Their next round of seated creativity work was still significantly better than people who had been sitting the whole time. The rest lingered for at least several minutes after the legs stopped moving.
You do not need to do creative work while walking. You need to walk before the creative work. The brain holds the state.
Edited down a long tweet. (x)
ok so this is another long shot but a few years ago there was a twitter post (in japanese i think?) that had measurememts for how to make this book stand thing out of cardboard that you could use to double up books and use up more space on shelves
back then i made a bunch of these but by now i lost the pic and dont know how to find the original post anymore
if it comes down to it i can just take one apart and get the measurements from there but i would be very grateful if anyone happens to have the original post or something similar??
don't mind how long it's been since i made this post, anyway i realized that i don't even need to take one apart to get the measurements when i can literally just unfold it and refold it /FACEPALM
so anyway here is the diagram for anyone else who is interested!!
this requires pretty big carboard pieces, if you have a really big box or something you can make it from one piece, but if you don't, you can also just make each of the pieces individually and then tape them together
and then in the end you put it together like this!!
and then when you make a bunch you can put them all next to each other and stack your books like crazy
EVERYONE START GETTING MORE USE OUT OF YOUR SPACE NOW!!!!

I love you sci-fi with aliens. But I LOVE you sci-fi that is conspicuously absent of aliens. We’ve pushed the boundaries of what humanity is capable of and voyaged out beyond the stars. And yet we’re alone. We’re still alone. What happens when there’s no one to save us from ourselves or even bear witness? Is there a line we can cross to recognize each other as “aliens” anyway? What makes us human?
Yes, hi, hello!
What are your thoughts on the notion that we are alone in the universe, not because life can't develop elsewhere, but because it simply hasn't yet?
That, in relation to it's potential, at approximately 13.8 billion years estimated, the universe is still so very young. That in time, by chance, other 'Earths' will form. With new oceans; new primordial soups; new, truly new, life — built from scratch beneath Suns that will not burn until long after our own has yielded all it's energy back to the folds of space. And that new life, whatever form it takes, may never even know that we were here, simply because we arrived so early.
What are your thoughts on the loneliness of First?
What about the thought that, if we truly did get to explore to the ends of the universe and we were the first, when we return to the planet we left in search of more, that we became the more we were looking for?
Returning home, unrecognizable by our own species. Either because of changes on earth, or changes in space.
That we ourselves, though the first, became the second and third and so on?
What would still make us human? Or would we lose that?
I’m kinda surprised that nalbinding isn’t as popular as crochet and knitting tbh because it has an even lower barrier of entry tools wise and unlike crochet and knitting it makes fabric that you can cut.
I guess it’s because it’s slower or something.
Nalbinding aka needle binding is when you use yarn and a big sewing needle to make fabric btw
It also has a lot of different kinds of stitches you can do that make different densities of fabric.
Some people even make rugs.
I feel like part of it might be casual people are generally aware of the existence of crochet and knitting, even if they don’t know very much about either, but have never heard of nalbinding
Yeah I hadn’t heard of it until recently and I ordered a big bone needle for myself to try it out and that should be arriving soon.
I was surprised that I’d never heard of it though. It’s older than knitting and crocheting and even though it’s been done all over the world it’s super relevant to Nordic culture and my grandmother and I are both into keeping in touch with our roots a bit so I’m surprised I’ve never heard of it.
It seems like the sort of thing that would be popular even if not as popular as crocheting and knitting, considering the low barrier of entry.
You also don’t need a bunch of different sized needles for nalbinding or whatever. The size of the stitch is controlled either completely freehand or by pulling it against one of your fingers. Most people who have a lot of nalbinding needles seem to either have tried out wood, bone, and metal ones to see which kind they liked or they enjoy carving wood or bone and like making their own needles as an extra hobby.
It’s also a lot easier to freehand and adjust as you go than crochet or knitting and you mostly go by inches instead of rows and number of stitches so a large number of accessories like stitch markers or whatever isn’t really necessary.
Maybe the lack of accessories also makes it unpopular idk. People do like collecting things in their nests.
I've been wanting to do so, I cannot find anyone who can teach me, and any books I can find on it are Ass in the Visual Learning department. Otherwise I'd be making the hell outta some nalbinded fabric
I found this channel by a nice man who makes up close tutorials
I create videos on YouTube to learn people how to needlebind using two fingers and your thumb. Needlebinding helps people to relax, relieve
I thought this would be kind of a niche post to make but I was quickly reminded that I’m on tumblr, the website full of gay people with one billion hobbies.
a scene from Survivability Bias by Audliminal on AO3. This fic scratches an itch I didn’t know I had. I love it when superheroes work with first responders, AND I love DPxDC fics where Phantom gets some actual support and help. Phantom getting training from firefighters? Genius.
Agreement!
@summerssixecho tagged me so here we go. Let's see if any themes come out:
(Highlight your preferred fanfic trope between the two listed. For example: // angst or crack // means you enjoy angsty over crack fics) (Feel free to highlight or indicate however you want.)
slowburn or love at first sight // fake dating or secret dating // enemies to lovers or best friends to lovers // there's only one bed or long-distance correspondence // hurt/comfort or amnesia // fantasy au or modern au // mutual pining or domestic bliss // smut or fluff // canon-compliant or fix-it // reincarnation or character death // one-shot or multi-chapter // kid fic or road trip fic // arranged marriage or accidental marriage // high-school romance or middle-age romance // time travel or isolated together // neighbors or roommates // sci-fi au or magic au // body swap or genderbent // angst or crack // apocalyptic or mundane
Some of these were quite hard because a lot are romance-aligned/romance-adjacent which I don't read a lot. And I don't like sci-fi NOR magic au's, so it's like the lesser evil lol. I very much live in the canon-compliant niche which just fleshes out the canon in more detail or explores what's possible within canon-established rules.
@arkyn-99 @weshney @tytach @the-outcast-ed @stillebesat @hipstergecko @asexual-insomniac @1800gotspook let's keep it going
@agentianlegend you tagged me awawawawa OKAY HERE GOES

This was so haaaaard. I enjoy many of these contradicting themes. Especially when written well! I guess I just went with what I've been reading lately.
Looking over them all at once, I feel like Icould write a story that hits every single one that i picked... probably end up a crack fic. XD
And now for some no judgment tagging! Just for funsies! @dcxdpdabbles @modmad @impyssadobsessions @snuffysbox @albinotopaz @agentchimendez @bludragongal

I haven’t been much active in the DP Fandom so I don’t know if anyone has been thinking about this but, here’s an AU where Fenton Works is SCP Foundation and Danny/the other ghosts are SCPs.
Since Danny can transform into a human form & do the ghostly wail, he’s considered as the most dangerous SCP.
Here’s where he gets his name “Daniel”(with nickname Danny). Combination between danger and thaumiel, the object class he was in.
Since Danny has never shown anything harmful, the foundation trusted him & trained him. Even treated him like a son.
Even tried bringing him to school, to see if he can work with human… Slowly he follows the human’s rule.
It was between life and death but, he managed to interact with humans & became friend~
(Also, to prevent Danny from school depression, a tiny clone of him was created)
Last but not least, here I am playing with the acronym(I don’t think the pic 100% fits in the acronym’s meanings but oh well)
AU source
DCXDP fanfic idea: The Forgotten
Danny Fenton is nothing special in Gotham. Just another face among the homeless population, slowly making his way through different parking lots at different hours of the day. He can't linger too long, because people start to throw him dirty looks, as if his lack of home was a personal sin Danny committed against them.
He didn't like to stay in one place for too long. Danny learned that was only asking for trouble. So he wandered, moving throughout the city in a directionless march, settling down for the night where he could.
It was easy to tell he was homeless, given the fact that he carried everything he owned in a stolen shopping cart. There were nights when he had to fight off other homeless people from stealing his things. It was easier to beat up adults, but sometimes his bleeding hero heart that was buried somewhere deep within his core would allow a child or two to make off with his hard-earned panhandling money or even warm articles.
ok so, I approached my local library with a proposal to donate a mural as a way to A: build portfolio/gain practical experience and B: give back to a beloved public institution. and that was a whole week on it's own so next comes the paintin' >:)
and now, the birds
Birds 1 and 2/14: Red Winged Blackbird, Male and female, Agelaius phoeniceus
Bird 3/14, American Robin, Turdus migratorius
hoo boy, ok *out of breath*
GIVE IT UP FOR BIRD NUMBUH 5, THE CANADIAN GOOSE, Branta canadensis!!!!
this guy took me about 4 days to completely finish, all of those freakingk coverts were a bear to render
speaking of obnoxious coverts:
bird 5/14, Bluejay, Cyanocitta cristata
the friggin stripes almost got me chat, i may not make it
Madam....
birds 6 and 7: American Goldfinch, Spinus tristis, male and female
pleasantly simple to paint! next is the flickerrrrr
*melts into goo*
BIRD NUMBER 8, (yellow shafted) NORTHERN FLICKERRRRR, Colaptes auratus
genuinely made me start questioning my sanity around day 3, it's half the size the of the goose, WHY did it take me 4 days to finish??
nothing but pain and suffering, i'm sure hope the next bird will be much easier and with FAR less barring :)
in other news, I am losing my mind hairline
SHE'S DONE!!
Bird number 9: Red-tailed hawk, Buteo jamaicensis
my chains are broken i am FREE. although i did have a great deal of fun with this, the barring on the wings itself took me like four days and i am READY to move on
this was a week and a half of continuous work so please excuse me for getting a little emotional in the bg 🙏
Hey guys,
You may be wondering why I haven't posted much in the last few days.
Unfortunately, I hurt my back and developed sciatica. I've spent the last four days sobbing, lying on the ground, and medicated to kingdom come. It doesn't feel like it's getting better. It actually feels like it's getting worse.
Idk how long I'll be away, but it may be a while. Thank you for understanding .
Soooo another update:
Turns out it wasn't just sciatica. One of my discs pushed out and was pinching my spinal cord. It made my leg go completely numb and I had to rush to the ER again due to the pain.
From there, they decided that my small town ER wasn't enough support and had an ambulance transfer me an hour and a half away. I spent the last two nights here waiting to see if they would clear emergency surgery, while being pumped full of pain meds. They decided to go with a steroid shot and physical therapy after getting the inflammation down, but it's going to be a long road to recovery.
I'm not going to sugarcoat it. I can't afford all of this, and due to my injury, I can't go to my second job.
I am going to try to do my best to write up a storm now that I'm bedridden. If any of it brings you joy, or even a slight amusement, I hope you would be able to leave me a small tip on my Ko-fi.
I am not doing commissions because I can't generate coming through on the writes (it's going to be a challenge to do it on my phone, since I can't really move too much on a keyboard) but I am pretty desperate at this point. The ambulance ride alone was nearly 5k.
Again, it's only if you can and if you like to. I love writing and want to make sure fandom works stay safe.
Thank you everyone

The biggest disservice the DP x DC fandom has ever done to me was have a character that can throw other characters into a novel, and not have Jason Todd and Danny Fenton be thrown into Pride and Prejudice
CAN YOU GUYS IMAGINE JASON GEEKING OUT IN EXCITEMENT CAUSE HES IN HOS FAVORITE ROMANCE NOVEL?!?
Danny: Help, Ghostwriter threw me into another book
Jason: I’m going to marry this man, the book told me to.
It would be a really cute will they won’t they romcom, with Danny acting all like Lizzie, trying to speed his way out of the book, Jason with his Bat brooding act, blushing like a fool on the inside, wanting to live out every single part of the book
WOULD DANNY EVEN REALIZE THERE WAS A ROMANCE PLOT????? WOULD HE BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE BOOK???
The potential for comedy of errors and misunderstandings from this alone has me cackling.
K but this puts Danny more as Mr Darcy than Jason does.
Danny: i don't want to go to a ball in the countryside, im in the middle of a crisis and this one guy I hate keeps trying to take advantage of my family by trying to abscond with my sister for cash(either vlad trying to do a custody thing with dani or Johnny 13 doing the bs he did with jazz with trying to make her possessable by kitty). My best friends dragged me out to the countryside to go clear my head but it literally happened so recently it's making me hate everything bc the fallout was so bad
Jason: i love to dance and my siblings and I get to dress up and have a good time AND WHO THE FUCK CALLED ME BARELY TOLERABLE??
The main reason why I think Jason would be Darcy and Danny Lizzie, is because Jason knows how the story goes.
Ghostwriter wouldn’t like that, he wants their slow burn to be real.
If Jason is Lizzie, he would know that Mr. Darcy calling him barely tolerable would mean to the story.
Danny doesn’t.
Danny would be absolutely pissed off when he hears Jason talk about him like that.
There is also the fact that Danny does not know what the characters look like, so when Danny sees Jason he’s just like “dang, I guess Mr. Darcy is smoking hot…”
Jason would know instantly that he’s not the only one stuck in the story, and that would make him even more excited, cause his Lizzie Bennet was a real person on the outside, that he could introduce his family too, and marry in real life.
The man is swooning
What if ghostwriter gets so fed up with them that he takes them out of the story before it ends. Imagine Jason extremely pissed off going "nope, you promised me a Jane Austen romance, I'm having one, i don't care if I have to make it a thing in the real world" and so he keeps doing stuff to get Danny to follow the plot points they missed.
Not sure if ghostwriter lore lets him take people out of stories while in the middle or if he has to let them finish but if he can't, I think it'd be fun for him to switch the books on them once he's annoyed enough. Like either the plot just changes to the new book completely or they're in a story inside a story and will have to go back and finish the plot of the 1st one before they can go back to the real world (not that Jason knows that)
Jason, trying to think of how he could recreate the plot point of Lydia marrying Mr. Wickham: …
This made me think, it would be pretty funny that instead of Ghostwriter getting so mad he takes them out, he goes to Jason while Jason is home alone when he’s waiting for the next plot point to argue with him.
Ghostwriter: bro, you’re blowing it
Jason: I know!! How do I get him to like me???
Just Jason not realizing until way after that the mysterious guy who visited him to give him dating tips was probably the guy who trapped him in the book
Okay but consider: all the Bennett sisters. It would be so fun to slot the Batfam into the Bennett roles. Ghostwriter chose the Waynes because he wanted Brucie as Mrs Bennett (totally unaware of Batman), and the brood is large enough he can fill out the rest of the cast pretty easily.
You'd think that this would automatically make Damian Lydia, but once the Bats realize what book they're in, both Damian and Tim are fistfighting (and knife fighting) each other to get to be the one to elope with their superboy.

The Monday Period: Part 1 of 6
Part 1: you are here
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
Part 6
I'm putting a leather cover on my thread book to make it more durable, and debating a layer of board between the paper and leather for extra rigidity.
To answer some questions: this is properly called a Chinese Thread Book, or Zhen Xian Bao. I followed the tutorial below when I made mine several years ago. It's not one single piece of origami, it's actually 31 (very repetitive) pieces that lock into each other. (If memory serves, I believe I added a bit of glue when I attached them to make it extra secure.)
The only modification I made to the pattern that's demonstrated is that I took the largest bottom layer, and added about an inch to its total length so that I would have a gap between both halves and could "close" it like you see above. I used a large pad of manila drawing paper, and just made my proportions as big as I could on the paper--I think I was somewhere near 24 inches on the longest side of the biggest piece, and the book is about 12 inches square.
It does hold objects well! Nothing big or bulky, but I usually have stickers, postcards, pressed flowers, envelopes and stamps in here; I emptied it mostly out because I'm thinking about bringing it to the hobbit larp in the fall. It is a bit delicate--it is just paper--but it's also really fun!
Because the pattern is modular, you could basically stop or continue at any stage--mine is five layers deep, but you could stop at three, or continue to ten, if you could find big enough paper.
