“no feedists in fat liberation” really echoes “no kink at pride” sentiment to me. feedists and freaks have been in both the fat and queer liberation movements since the beginning. the founder of the first fat acceptance organization, naafa (founded just 2 weeks after the stonewall riots), was a self proclaimed ‘fat admirer’ who wanted to create a better world for his fat wife. not to credit a thin white man for the legacy of fat lib, really the more influential figures branched off of naafa were the fat underground: politically radical, fat lesbians who had regular retreats & were very open about fat sexuality. we had the gay chub/chaser scene which originated with girth & mirth in new york and san francisco the 1970s, some of the first spaces where fat men could feel accepted and be desired openly. for as long as there’s been positive ideas about fat, there have been people who love it.
#as a fat butch dyke #i want to feel desired #and i don't want people to have to step on eggshells and want me the right way #so basically i want kink at pride #feedists at fat lib #and freaks and weirdos on either side of me #honestly imo saying feedists don't belong in fat lib feels a lot like saying lesbians can't be a part of feminism

So many little ways that hatred of some underclass — immigrants, the homeless, the young — requires making things worse for everyone so those in the under class don't get anything nice either. Whole smorgasbord of shooting yourself in the foot out of spite
have to keep ourselves poorer just to keep brown people out. can't have public bathrooms because the homeless might use them. have to play high-pitched noise to keep teens away. we are letting the cruelest people among us make our lives worse so they can be hateful

oh my fucking god
if i had a time machine, first thing id do is obviously kill hitler. even if germanys fascism was caused by complex socioeconomic factors itd still be worth doing for the bit. then id go even further back to the early 20th century and become one of those old timey bank robbers, when they had names like 'pretty boy floyd' and 'baby face nelson' and id make sure people knew me as 'sweet baby ray' just to see how it fucks with barbeque sauce history
This is for new foragers, like my coworker:
'Medicinal' does NOT mean 'good for you and safe to eat all the time'. A plant being 'medicinal' does NOT mean that eating it, without any idea of WHY and HOW it's considered medicinal, is a good idea. It is UNWISE to consume a plant that has a long history of use in a way that DOES NOT have a long history of use.
In addition to learning that a plant is edible, you need to learn how it is eaten, what part is eaten, when it's harvested, and how to harvest it sustainably and in a way that supports its continued existence (unless it's invasive). If people only eat the ripe berries as food, then don't eat unripe berries. Don't. Eat. Unripe. Berries. UNLESS! There's! precedent! For that plant!
I know there's this idea going around that Americans only eat sweet or salty things, and that we've eliminated bitter things from our diet, and we should thus be eating more bitter things. But! Bitter things are bitter for a reason, and sometimes that reason is poison! Some of them are medicinally useful at the correct dose, but! You need to know what that is! You need to be doing it on purpose! DO NOT! Assume that bitter means that it's good for you!
Yes! Foxgloves can be medicinal in the right dose but they're also really poisonous if you just eat them randomly. Willow bark has the compound that can be refined into aspirin but if you eat it it's really easy to give yourself ulcers. Also, you must get a foraging book that is specific to your local environment, poisonous lookalikes vary by region
Eliminated bitter things from our diets? Nonsense, what about coffee?
Anyways, yes. Medicinal plants are medicines. They have drug interactions and side effects. You can overdose. Modern pharmaceuticals are a good thing because you know exactly how much of the active ingredient you are consuming, and there is a lot of information on the safety.
Also, like any food, you can randomly have a sensitivity or an allergy to a plant you haven't eaten before, so maybe only eat a little the first time you eat it.

Man who was a Blackwater Mercenary, 3 times Iraq veteran, who served as a guard at Abu Ghraib, one time Afghanistan veteran, who said he loved it, and got a Nazi tattoo to celebrate it, and was accused a couple months ago of sexual assault and abuse - which the Yankee left were cool with and defended - is also a rapist
I sincerely believe you should go to hell
I want to add one thing to this which is.
"As someone from Maine" creates the rhetorical impression of the value and worth of what a person has to say as directly impacted by this subject.
I find it especially nasty because the real value and worth of a lived experience in this context is of somebody who lives or lived in the areas he was deployed to.
Speaking about the lived reality of Maine again simply reinforces that american lives are worth more than anything else.
There is a really frustrating thing where some kinds of speculative story are hard to write because they will be assumed to be bad (clumsy, harmful, regressive) metaphors for real-world events or people, rather than exploring completely speculative ideas. Like:
"What if a small group of religious extremists, persecuted in their own country, moved to an inhospitable uninhabited island and had to rebuild society there?" - But the Americas and Australia weren't inhospitable and were full of Native nations, why are you perpetuating the idea of Terra Nullius and manifest destiny? - Yes, that's because this isn't a metaphor for the British invading other countries, it's a metaphor for finding out how much of a person's religious practise is rooted in worldly concerns, vs how much they will really stymie themselves for the sake of God.
"What if 1/100 children born was a werewolf?" - But queer people are no danger to straight people, and disabled people don't have predictable patterns to their illnesses, and most people who have uncontrollable rages really CAN control them and are just lying, and no minority group has superpowers... - Yes, but that's all immaterial, because I wanted to talk about a load of other metaphors about the passage of time and responsibility and the relationship between humans and wildlife.
It almost feels like death of the author, like "Death of the most obvious metaphor" - If you couldn't reach for the (tormented) parallel between being an alien species and being stateless, what stories could someone tell? If your changeling-baby was neither disabled nor adopted, what would the story be about? Etc.
All these industries with shortages of workers and they can’t figure out why.
Im proposing the hypothesis that the reason we don’t have enough doctors/pilots/bus drivers/etc is that maybe, just maybe, having your entire industry function as a lifelong hazing ritual isn’t the best recruiting strategy.
Doctors are subject to 8 years of post-secondary education and are forced to work 48 hour shifts.
Pilots and other transportation workers have absurd hours of service requirements that start your rest period as “the moment you shut the vehicle down” and can be as short as 9 hours in some cases.
Railroad workers have to be available on-call 6 days a week and be ready within two hours notice. They don’t get sick time.
Retail workers have to keep a veneer of politeness against any and all abuse or they can be fired.
Truck drivers get paid by mileage and rarely see pay for shipper or receiver delays.
Work should not be designed to make you a miserable burnout and yet here we are.
Silly phone, you're not detecting an analog audio accessory, you're detecting soup, from the bowl of soup I dropped you in.
