i think we as modern humans have a tendency to forget that historical people were also humans who had thoughts and feelings and dreams just like we do
bear in mind that i'm mostly interested in medieval english history, but... do you really think that all women suffered miserable, joyless lives? that no man ever loved his wife? that no gay person ever lived in peace? that no child ever grew up to live a life they loved? that no parent ever saw their disabled child and cared for them anyway? that nobody ever had sex, and enjoyed it? that no priest was ever truly virtous, that nunneries were always places where women were sent away to be locked up? do you really think that it was just suffering day in, day out, unless you were the richest of the rich? do you really think that simply living in a different time made people stupid, senseless, violent? do you really think that people living in the past were so different from us, that they never had thoughts and feelings and dreams to rival our own?
do you really think that people in the past were not people?
In the first four episodes, every single episode has Stede having at least one flashback to his family; clearly the guilt is weighing heavy on his mind. Then he and Ed have the moment where they think they’re about to die and Stede pulls out Mary’s painting, telling Ed he was should have been a lighthouse to guide his family. But Ed points out that technically you’re supposed to avoid lighthouses, which leaves Stede taken aback in a positive way; he’d never thought of it like that before.
From that point until episode 9, there are no more flashbacks to Stede’s family, no more mention of them, we don’t even see the lighthouse painting again. Ed was able to reframe the situation for Stede such that Stede was finally able to give himself permission to let go of the guilt he was carrying around. With Ed, Stede is finally able to allow himself to truly enjoy his new life and new freedom to be himself.
And then episode 9 happens and the man signing them into the naval academy says, “Wife, Mary Bonnet.” Hard cut to Mary, her face slamming onto the screen with the same force as the guilt slamming its way back into Stede. Guilt that’s twice as strong now, since he also has to feel guilty about having ever let it go in the first place.
Really, it’s no wonder Chauncey was able to rattle him so deeply.

I will miss you if they finally realize about you, Tumblr the website and app Twitter account. You shined bright, you magnificent being.
And some of you may not have heard this peak of human culture, but... just after Twitter purchase by Elon Musk got confirmed, a bunch of (serious) journalist put together a Twitter Space (a live audio streaming where any of the attendees can ask to participate) about what was going to happen next, and ... @tumblr joined. And... they invited tumblr to speak. I can't describe how much joy this moment brought me and how fucking proud made me of being part of our little entropy generator here:

thinking about how klingon courting works by the female roaring and throwing heavy objects and the male reading love poetry
gay klingons:
lesbian klingons:
Do gay Klingons ever get frustrated/dejected because their gentleman caller hasn’t so much as kicked a pebble their way or uttered the slightest growl?
Do questioning Klingons ever show their crush their poetry, only to have their crush assume that he’s helping them proofread or something?
Is there ever an issue where a lesbian Klingon tries very awkwardly to recite poetry to her lady love?
Or instances where two lesbians are basically beating the shit out of each other and both thinking “I know she thinks this is just a regular old gal fight, but no, seriously, I’m trying to declare my intentions here”?
Are there euphemisms for LGBT Klingons? “Don’t try to win her over, Riker. She reads poetry.”
This one of the best things I’ve ever read

There was an old menorah hidden somewhere up here.
Bruce lifted another dusty box out of the way, avoiding the cloud of dirt it flung up into the attic. He tried to recall where Alfred had carefully buried the box—a soft velvet, inlaid with silk—decades ago.
Perhaps he’d blocked it from his memory. Perhaps he’d merely forgotten.
“What are you doing?”
Bruce looked up from the boxes. Dick was standing at the attic door, a lone eyebrow raised. His hair was wet, like he’d just gotten out of the shower.
“Looking for something,” he muttered, turning away. Another box—no, this was china. Why did they have so much china? “How was patrol?”
“Quiet,” Dick replied with a shrug. He stepped into the attic, circling Bruce’s position. “You do realize it’s four in the morning, right?”
