1) Eyam the plague village

I assume this is commonly known in the UK, however, i am not British and would not have gotten this one probably ever if I didn’t read a snippet about it in Paige Lewis’s new book Canon 20 minutes ago (very good and coming out May 19th btw. I think queer long live evil fans who like lit fic would fuck with it).

In it there is a minor reference to Eyam, a village with a huge bubonic plague outbreak in Derbyshire in which people tried to prevent transmission by dousing coins in vinegar when they paid for things.

I assume this is just inspiration for the combination of a country marked by a plague (the undead) and magic stones/metal sealing the undead in their graves, but cool to know the historical connection.

2) Victoria Broccoli = Emily Spinach

Our iconic snake Vicky B is a reference to President Teddy Rosevelt’s daughter Alice’s green pet snake. (Yeah I learned this one from red white and royal blue. That’s where we all probably learned it in 2020).

3) Lord Popenjoy

Refers to this book, about a possibly illegitimate son who is named heir to the Popenjoy title (aka Eric’s name for his fake lord identity is a reference to another fictional character with a dubious title)

4) Infante Pedro & Ines

Where the inspiration came from for Key’s fucked up thing where he made people stare at Lia’s corpse on the throne in the Rae’s version timeline.

5) Dancing to death in iron shoes

Her eyes were level with his mouth. Villains often had cruel mouths. As mouths went, Key’s was a homicide.
