as someone who has definitely been guilty of this in the past it's so clear to me now how so much of modern online discourse can basically be boiled down to people who want to do "good" but have no clue how to go about it and so they fall back on either societal values that they've never investigated or personal experiences without applying any level of introspection whatsoever. the result being everyone perpetuating ideas and talking points that make no sense once analyzed critically but they seem morally correct under a certain subjective lens, and everything else is not only wrong but also something to feel guilty of if you even dare entertain the idea. because being "good" is about appearances and being reassured as a good person first, and the actual reality of the world second.
and the only conclusion to this mentality of self-flagellating into being good as defined by an ethereal vibes-based morality is to start policing other people for not being in line with you because "good people" repress all of their feelings and desires even if it sucks ass because sacrifice is a virtue and if you can't do that then that means you're Selfish and Bad. and thus, discourse is born.
