When you are approved for the DTC, you can open an RDSP and get those matching funds from the government for 10 years retroactively. Because you can also claim the DTC on your taxes for 10 years retroactively, you may get a lump sump you can use to open an RDSP and claim those sweet, sweet retroactive grants and bonds. Because this is intended to save for retirement, the money has to stay in the RDSP until you're 65 or you forfeit the grants and bonds. This means you can make investment decisions that benefit from money being invested over the long term and get yourself some higher return rates. You will be able to make use of this 300% matching only until you're 49 years old. I didn't admit/realize I was disabled enough to need a government stamp of approval until I was in my mid-40s. The government read my application and determined, on the first submission, that I've been capital-D Disabled for the last 20 years. Do you see where I'm going with this? I won't make it to the lifetime cap of $70k in matching contributions, but I could have if I'd applied earlier and all that money would have been sitting there working for me over a longer span of time. But you can learn from my mistakes. Carney even just made the DTC easier to access. Many advocacy and professional organizations have guides to filling out the DTC, a websearch will give you some options and you can pick the one you feel best fits your practitioner (length, language, etc.).
