My posts have gotten tagged LGB more and more often lately. Usually accompanied by the worst additions imaginable. People are starting to whittle down and choose who they think of as disposable, so let me say this:

Queer as in trans people

Queer as in asexual people

Queer as in aromantic people

Queer as in nonbinary people

Queer as in bisexual people

Queer as in unlabled people

Queer as in anyone who counts themselves as queer.

Tumblr is such a unique confluence of queerness, youth culture, internet culture, and art that it is imperative it is preserved for future generations. Tumblr is often forgotten, derided “Who even uses Tumblr anymore?” Queer people, artists, disabled folks, indigenous and POC peoples, people who are pushed to the margins in general society and forgotten about, is who uses Tumblr. Because this is by definition a vulnerable population, our culture is also vulnerable. Vulnerable to erasure through censorship, capitalism, and technological drift. But we do not have to be forgotten. We can take our culture in our own hands and preserve it in the way that makes the most sense for us and that centers our wants and needs. Our community has exhibited great power in the past, and we can do it again. This is, without doubt, a matter of survival: survival of our culture, yes, but also survival of individuals who find comfort and inspiration by learning that they are not the first but rather the latest in a long line of people just like them. More importantly, we must begin doing such work sooner rather than later, or risk all of Tumblr queer culture going the way of so many smaller sites and forums before it, defunct, erased, and forgotten, leaving holes in the record of the history of the queer community (Wexelbaum 2015).

Preservation of Tumblr Queer Culture is Important

Would you believe me if I said that the Utena movie makes a lot more sense to me than the show does, as a whole? Many fans of the show were disappointed with the movie version, saying it was “too weird,” or it “didn’t make any sense.” In this post, I’ll be writing about my interpretation of my favorite anime movie, The Adolescence of Utena, and what I think this movie is trying to show (yes, there is a pretty simple answer to this). Naturally, spoilers for the whole movie will be included, as well as a few from the TV series.
