Earth gets the beetles back, fixes the dimming sun, and slowly starts to recover. The astronauts who carried out the fatal mission are gone, surely, either due to coma complications or starvation, but their sacrifice saved the Earth. They were heroes.

Many years later, Earth picks up an approaching object. It’s not a comet nor space debris, but a spaceship.

An alien spaceship.

Space agencies manage to make radio contact as they approach. A musical hum, like three chords played on top of one another. Then:

“You are all a staggering waste of carbon.”
