Parasites seem to be much smaller than their prey. They need the future food supply, so the goal is not to kill their prey but just mildly annoy them.

With human victims the same size this is difficult. Even if they used only a small knife or, ok, "a bite", people would then go "argh I was attacked by a vampire" and the whole community would become vigilant and hostile.

Fangs are super stupid. With fangs you would inflict much larger damage than necessary and couldn't be subtle at all. Fangs are definitely made for killing if you're not much smaller than your prey.

Mosquitos are also much smaller but a man sized mosquito vampire... mosquire... vampito... could still have a proboscis the girth of a syringe needle, leaving only a small puncture mark, and with a bit of experience and skill leave the victim asleep. (If you don't go "wheeeeeeeee" around their bedroom, like a mosquito, that is.)

this particularly works with anything negative i’ve forecasted. “i woke up feeling like shit today, so my day is gonna suck” isn’t a particularly helpful thought, but “it’s a great day to be alive!!!!!” feels hollow and insincere when i have a pounding headache & am running on three hours of sleep

instead i’ll tell myself, “i really don’t feel good right now, but i’m open to the possibility that coffee and breakfast might perk me up a bit.” or “i’m in a lot of pain today, but i’m open to the possibility that my workday might still have fun parts despite that”
