I went to a trans variety show with my friend last night! All the preformers were fantastic and I had a good time. Afterwards we got to talking and noticed that there werent many POC queer/trans people. We both wished there were more POC queer/trans specific events in our area. Ultimately we concluded that we would probably have to make our own.

Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer is such a great book and is honestly a breath of fresh air after reading YA slop. The world VanderMeer creates is so compelling and full of mystery. The hypnosis, transitional landscapes, living tower/text and uncanny human like Area X flora/fauna are some highlights.
The way the characters are written is one of the things I like most about this book. The biologist has this complexity and depth to her. Her struggle to be vulnerable and self-sabotaging and isolating behavior are so relatable. By the end of the book she learns more about herself than Area X.
Shortly after reading the book I re-watched the 2018 film directed by Alex Garland. I had seen the movie when it came out and thought it was good and evidently it inspired me to read the book many years later.
Upon watching it a second time I think its just an OK movie. I want to preface by saying I know they had to make changes to adapt it to film. However, there are certain elements I wished they kept. For instance, not knowing the names of the characters and the tower/living writing.
I found it interesting that they changed/added the biologists/her husbands background to military. I also think making the biologist(Lena in the movie) not know where her husband went completely changes how we interpret her character and her motivations!
Honestly I have a lot more to say but this is all I can write for now.
