This is a Dieffenbachia seguine, cultivar "Camille."
Well, actually there are three of them, very small. And very, very battered. Sunburned, with dry, thin leaves that almost look like wet paper, the extremely dry soil that looks like a single compact tablet.
How did it get like this? Well, someone probably forgot it in the sun without watering it. And that someone isn't us, because that's how we bought it.
That's right: bought it. We have to create a jungle on a very tight budget, remember? And so when we saw this dying plant in the local DIY store, offered at the modest price of just one euro (a steal for one, or rather, for several Dieffenbachias) due to its pitiful condition, we couldn't resist and bought it.
We think we can perform a miracle, transforming these three tiny masses of limp, withered leaves into spectacular adults. They'd been sitting on the shelf for too long… no one would take them, and they were teetering on the brink, with one foot (or rather, a root, or rather, almost all of them) in the grave. They'll be perfect for our low-budget jungle house.
We bought this plant about four days ago and… ooohh… things are already starting to change, don't you think?
It looks like it's already out of danger: a little ugly, but at this point it'll definitely survive. What a relief! All we had to do was leave it all night with the pot soaking in a saucer full of water, then bring it back inside and place it in a very bright spot, among its other jungle companions, which keep it humid.
Of course, we also trimmed off the damaged leaves, which were further curling up and yellowing, so as you can see, the foliage is much lighter.
But we're confident that in a week or two it can be replenished without any problems, considering that, as you can see, it's already putting out new leaves, with beautiful shoots!
We'll keep you updated ;)
