thank you to this amazing person who sent this in. please PLEASE be careful online, especially in religious spaces. hellenic polytheism isnt immune to cult-like behaviour. learn the signs and call them out. it is the only way to keep everyone safe.
even if you hate me and my blog, please share this. this information is so, so important and it goes beyond my blog. everyone needs to read this. take it from someone LITERALLY QUALIFIED in these subjects (this anon) if from no one else.
Can we include darebee.com with ao3 and wikipedia on our list of really good nonprofits with excellent services that we stan?
It's a free, no sign-up, no ads fitness resource created by professionals who view this as activism (fitness should be accessible to everyone), and it's very thoughtful and thorough.
Features I really like:
- all instructions for workout routines are diagrammed on single pages with a clean, easy to read layout
- there's 30 or 60 day programs you can follow if you, like me, don't know what to do. they take you through a rotation of workouts so you're working different muscle groups on different day for a specific purpose
- there's so much variety and there's a filter so you can find the level and your goals and type of workout you wanna do
- you don't need any equipment
- some of the programs are RPGs or adventure stories! How's that for motivation. There's also badges and achievements or something but I haven't looked that closely at how that works yet
- they're nerds. they name workouts after D&D classes. There's a Lannistrr workout, a batcave workout, a witcher workout
- I've only scratched the surface
I'm doing this really easy one to start out
Darebee, darebee, fitness, visual workouts, workouts, fitness challenges, fitness motivation, training tips, recipes, nutrition
If you don't understand from the picture they have an Exercise Library playlist in YouTube so you can see what all the moves look like in motion!
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQSMS0J6JbrKdSOSbyJXaQ_zN_HSSp7zZ
Also a reminder that they desperately need funding. They're at 39% of their goal. Throw them a buck if you can.
"Punishment works!!!" We're drowning in three to four generations of people so pants-shittingly terrified of ever being wrong that half of everyone has constructed a worldview wherein they never even consider the possibility that they could be wrong and the other half behaves like one wrong move will make anything or anyone explode violently into a million irreperable pieces. I don't think it works guys
I know this might be a bold take but maybe teaching everyone from a young age that ever making a mistake will be met with unimaginable pain and misery doesn't actually encourage learning or correct behavior. If anything it creates a sense of terror so powerful it completely suffocates curiosity and exploration, thus leading to people knowing absolutely nothing but whatever is brought directly to them, which is a big problem in a world where information is so tightly controlled that a very small number of very powerful people basically have complete power over what people see and hear on a day-to-day basis when not actively seeking new and rigorously verified information from diverse and trustworthy sources.
if any of this sounds like you, start by looking up the definition of words you've heard and are pretty sure you know what they mean, but haven't actually double-checked for yourself. Just like, whenever it occurs to you. Great first step
This post goes out to the "we need to bring back bullying" crowd. Just because you aren't hitting someone physically doesn't mean you aren't being punitive. Maybe it isn't actually healthy to believe it's necessary to harass and humiliate anyone who makes you upset or uncomfortable. That sounds like a you problem actually.
Anyways, breaking the cycle of abuse starts with you and how you treat yourself. You have to give yourself grace and room for error or you'll never be able to cultivate a healthier mindset than your trauma left you with. It's not easy, but you have to trust yourself that whatever seems kinder than however you usually treat yourself is probably a good enough start. Doesn't need to be perfect, doesn't need to be The Correct Answer, just needs to be a step in the right direction, y'know? We'll figure out the details along the way.
Hey so remember when the current wave of anti-transmasc discourse appeared and a bunch of us were like "this sounds exactly like baeddelism"
And how some of us were like "declaring that half of the trans/nonbinary community and everyone outside of it is Out To Get Transfems is bad because it makes socially vulnerable transfems even more isolated! Just like with the original baeddels who used it to abuse people!"
And how we were like "saying trans women are ontologically incapable of evil is going to be used to cover for abuse, just like the original baeddels did"
And how we were like "making it so that any accusation of abuse against a trans woman is written off as transmisogyny is also going to be used by abusers, just like the original baeddels did"
And NOW the neo-baeddels have one-upped the originals by defending pedophilia and saying anyone who disagrees with them is transmisogynist! Y'know, like someone who definitely isn't looking for young victims would do (WINK)
It's almost like we knew what we were saying when we said "hey this is a rancid philosophy and it's going to harm a lot of people! Mostly young trans women!" Because we'd seen it happen before!
I hate it here!!!!!!!
(Further reading if you aren't familiar with baeddels.
Also it should go without saying but: obviously I am not saying transfems/trans women in general are abusive. This is about a relatively small and very specific group of extremely online trans women. I am also saying to never trust anyone who wants you to buy into a philosophy that says Only The In-Group Is Trustworthy And Safe, for any value of "in-group.")

september was practice… in october I’m getting my shit together
in november I'm getting my shit together
in december I’m getting my shit together
A closely watched class and collective action against the HR management services company Workday, Inc. reached a new milestone recently, whe
Question, and forgive me if this has been asked already, but how do I unlearn intersexism as a trans perisex person? I’m not exactly sure where to start. I follow a few blogs like yours but I don’t think it’s enough in terms of unlearning all the ways society is inherently intersexist and how that’s been ingrained in my psyche (personally still struggling with unlearning agab stuff since that’s how transness was first explained to me like a decade ago)
hey that's a good question!
it might be worth seeing if your local library, or online library programs like Libby, have books written by intersex people that you can borrow!
i personally have picked up these two so far:
Nobody Needs to Know: A Memoir by Pidgeon Pagonis
From intersex activist Pidgeon Pagonis comes a candid a…
Inverse Cowgirl: A Memoir by Alicia Roth Weigel
From a celebrated activist on the forefront of fighting…
there are also a few organizations and websites that you can also look into for research:
We see a world in which intersex people make their own choices about their bodies. interACT advocates for children born with unique sex trai
Intersex is a general term used for a variety of conditions in which a person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’
this isn't a comprehensive list by any means, but i hope that some of these can be of use to you! if i think of or come across more, i'll be sure to add them! as always, if anyone else knows of more information and places to learn about intersexism and what life is like for intersex people, please feel free to chip in!
@queerliblib also has a couple books abt intersex stuff I believe! They’re based on Libby (online library service for ebooks and audiobooks) and anyone in the US can sign up for a card.
(just checked and they have Inverse Cowgirl as an ebook (two copies, both on hold) but not Nobody Needs to Know. searching “intersex” returns 22 books. some of those are clearly intersex-focused, but some of them look to be more trans-focused, presumably with intersex people as a side note-type mention or discussion, or more broadly lgbtq-focused. the search did not return Inverse Cowgirl tho, so there may be other books related to intersex stuff that didn’t show up in the search)
thank you!
I keep thinking about all of the disabled activists and people before me who stranded themselves on the 4th floor of buildings for weeks and crawled up stairs and fought with airline staff and schools and doctors and refused to stop existing in the face of injustice and bigotry no matter how big and scary and hopeless it seemed. Every time I get angry and scared the protests that lead to the creation of the ADA pop up again and remind me that disabled people are so much fucking stronger than anyone has ever given us credit for, and I can't help but be proud of that. And I know not all disabled people feel like we should take pride in our disabilities and have flags or whatever, but I think not just living, but thriving, in spite of a world that wants us dead and gone, in the face of both illness and persecution, and how we've not only bought ourselves forward, but uplifted the disabled people around us, secured more equal futures for everyone who will come after, and truly changed the way so many abled people have seen us for the better is something to be damn fucking proud of.
We have always been here and we always will be, there will never be a world without disabled people because being disabled is not bad, it's a natural part of the human experience and yeah it sucks some times but even when it sucks we have fought to build beautiful, unique, happy lives with people, both like us and not, and that should be celebrated.
The first sign of human civilization is the healed femur. The body of the profoundly disabled person who would have needed help to even just eat being carefully laid to rest after decades of a full, happy life. The medicinal plants showing even before we were entirely human we were doing what we could to not just survive, but alleviate suffering while we're at it. Above everything, evolution selected not the baby who can walk and eat and be quiet, but the one that can ask for help.
Disabled people are not just angry cockroach motherfuckers who refuse to die, we are proof of humanity's HUMANITY. Proof that natural selection selected a species that takes care of each other. From healed femurs and medicinal plants to vaccines and IVs and insulin to now, we are driven to help one another, we are at our strongest when we don't leave our most vulnerable behind. And I am living proof of that. My mother is living proof of that. Every disabled and chronically and/or mentally ill person I know is living proof of that.
And I don't know about the rest of you, but will carry that shred of humanity's true nature inside me like it's my fucking soul. I am scared and angry and hurt, but I have a lifetime's experience being scared and angry, and I can shake off the kind of pain that would make Atlas crumble to dust like it's nothing but a stiff fucking breeze. Disabled people have always been here, turning fear and anger and pain into joy and beauty and connection, and I'm not going to let everyone who came before me down. I'm not going to give up. Not now, not ever.
It's okay if you're disabled and you've hit your limit, you're too scared and tired and hurt, I won't blame you. But I won't abandon you, either. I might not be able to right all of the wrongs in the world, but I'll be strong, I'll carry all of you with me, I will not give up.
As I've said before, society hates a cripple who won't die, so we must spite them and live anyway.
Please, live anyway. I know if anyone can, it's us.

Fun, sparkly, casual gender nonconformity is awesome and wonderful, but it's also not the only type. Gender nonconformity can be serious, and it should have a respected place in society.
It's not inappropriate for a man to wear a dress to a business meeting. It's not inappropriate for a woman to wear a three-piece suit to a funeral. It's not inappropriate for someone to dress androgynous for an interview. Gender nonconformity is, for many people, just a part of expression. It's not just a performance or a fun weekend thing (although, again, that's good too)!
If gender nonconformity is only viewed as "casual", and is still punished in professional spaces for being "inappropriate", trans, genderqueer and gender nonconforming people will never be free. If you only treat gender nonconformity with respect in drag bars and pride festivals, you don't actually respect gender nonconformity.
i have understood so many things about online leftist culture by the fact that when i said "your local community has people you will morally and politically disagree with but you cannot lock them out of accessing any tangible service you’re organising" one of the tags responding said "this isn’t about proshippers in here you’re not welcome" like. folks. focus with me. some of us are homeless here.
There's a disconnect happening here because the primary function of social media for most casual users is to form a circle of friends around the usual things that friendships are built on: shared interests and lifestyles and ideas of what is important and what is unacceptable. When people are mainly doing leftism on social media, this encourages thinking of leftism as centered around establishing high-minded social clubs.
For anyone who still isn't getting it from someone who helps people IRL: There's a difference between whom you're helping to feed at the mealshare and whom you're choosing to hang out with for fun after the mealshare. You don't have to invite a hungry person with opinions you don't like to play board games with you, but you do have to help keep them from starving if you're serious about leftist organizing.
I think we should call out women's misogyny more often. My mom was the most misogynistic person I had ever encountered growing up. At herself, at other people. like she's better now, but woman left me some deep scars.
"but women need protecting from men! bear in the woods etc" no I will BITE YOU. I'm biting you so hard right now. I'm femininely beating your ass. I don't need "protecting" from men. i'm not a child. Or a dog or something, I'm a grown ass biting you machine. The amount of women who just said stuff like that still makes me sick.
See, this is also bad actually. The whole concept is flawed. Instead of seeing a random man and treating him as an individual who makes his own decisions, It's a biased assumption that says "this guy is a man, and there for I am unable to trust him to act good." instead of biessentialism, you just switched it out for gender essentialism. It was flawed concept to begin with. It's still terf ideology. It's based on the misogynistic idea that women are weaker and should be weary of strange men, that women are safer with other women. It makes it easier for women to be abused and abuse other people. These ideas at their very core are bunk. If you are in the woods and you would rather meet a bear than a strange man, seeing him as more of a threat instead of a positional ally, you are the problem. Mainly, okay, you're saying a human man is more dangerous than a wild animal. Are we not seeing this? we're saying that a black bear, or idk polar bear, a bear that has and will eat humans, is better than some guy. it's.. are we not seeing this
The idea that women are weak and in need of a protection began in the patriarchy. You can rebrand it to sound feminist, but the idea will always be sexist to its core.
Hot take, but everyone should be taught the symptoms and signs of a stroke. This should be a mandatory lesson in school.
Anyone could have a stroke, at any time, including you, the person reading this! If you were having a stroke wouldn't you want someone to be able to quickly identify it and get you help before it got really bad? Brain damage is fucking serious, and yet it's the butt of so many jokes and ehat most people know about it is the "burnt toast smell" which can be caused by many things.
So, as someone who has forced my mother to let me do her annual stroke test assessment to make sure she still knoes the stroke signs and everything, here are some things you can do to try and determine if someone is having a stroke. (Yes I passed the test everytime I did it and my mother would watch it with me)
Has their face drooped? Ask them to smile wide and if one or both sides of their face are drooping, they may be having a stroke. Call 911 or whatever emergency services
After this, ask them if you can touch their arms and legs to see if they can feel it. If they do not say yes or some affirmative DO NOT TOUCH THEM. Consent isn't just for sex, and this person is most likely going through a very traumatic sscenario. If they say yes, have them close their eyes and tell you which body part and or side you are touching them on. Let the 911 operator know your findings, and if they say no move on to the next step.
Test their speech. Have them say "I want my mother/mama" Can they say "a cactus is prickly"? If their speech is slurred then this is a sign of a stroke. Tell the 911 operator how severe the slurring is.
Have them try to raise their arms and legs. Let the operator know if they can or cannot raise any of their limbs, or if they have any difficulty.
Finally, ask them what year it is, what day it is, who's the president, where they are, etc. If they answer any of these questions wrong (especially if it seems like a really random answer) let the operator know.
Hopefully this helps someone. And please, for the love of fuck, treat stroke patients and survivors and people with brain damage like normal fucking people. Don't baby them and shit, and treat then like how you'd treat anyone else.
In addition, if you realize that you are suddenly realize that you cannot move part of your body, the wrong words are coming out of your mouth, you can't identify something that you think you should know, or you hear your words slurring immediately call your emergency services. If your words are coming out wrong, see if there is a way to text them instead or try to find someone to help. Single someone out to help call.
As someone who has experienced all of these symptoms for reasons other than a stroke, I know it's scary as fuck, but it's going to be ok. The important thing is that you get help as quickly as possible and tell them that it is a stroke.
Get yourself a fabric store that will light your fabric on fire for you
No but legit I asked what the fiber content of something was and the guy didn’t know so he cut a chunk off and lit it on fire and felt the ashes and was like. Yeah this is mostly cotton with a lil bit of silk. And that was the moment I knew. This is it. This is the fabric store for me. Also that guy is marriage material. Not for me but damn some person is gonna be so happy with him.
Ok but this is actually one of the easiest ways to tell what something is made of! I did a textiles degree and one day as part of a class we all went outside with a pile of scrap fabric and set fire to the little pieces and recorded how they burned. We were given a chart that looked something like this to tell what each fabric was (it gets a little tricky is it’s a mix of fabrics though). Why did we do this? There is very little regulation in the textiles industry so a lot of materials are mislabelled as something they aren’t and sold for more than they should be, also sometimes people buy fabric second hand or discounted which doesn’t have any label at all. If you have a fabric you are having doubts about, cut a tiny piece off and do the burn test and you should know pretty fast what you are dealing with. Anyways your fabric store should be lighting things on fire because this means that they are actually checking what the fabrics are and aren’t trying to pass cheap stuff off as more expensive than it is.
Ooh! I knew it was a standard test but I hadn’t seen a chart as detailed as this thank you!

Hey you know what sucks is predatory companies that make you enter your email address so that they can harass and advertise to you to access resources you might need to keep track of expenses after a disaster. So, uh, fuck them.
If you need to track the cost of things like hotel stays, pet kenneling, medical care, etc. after a disaster you can use this worksheet.
If you need to create an inventory of your home for an insurance claim (and if you'd like to do this to keep someplace safe before a disaster) you can use this worksheet (two pages, instructions on the first page, worksheet on the second).
And here's a FEMA document with numbers for disaster relief groups and a checklist of documents that you may need to have replaced as well as a description of what to do if you had cash in your home that was destroyed and can possibly be replaced.
Bringing this back because there are a ton of people who are going to need it. A lot of stupid bullshit disaster recovery companies will be reaching out to people whose homes burned down. A lot of people whose homes burned down will be searching for resources that come from websites that require them to give up personal details in order to get worksheets and tools.
These are free documents you can download to keep track of disaster recovery expenses or make a list for insurance claims.
I know people are exhausted and frightened and not thinking about stuff but start a folder in your email for receipts for things you're paying for right now so that you can fill out these forms later.
Don't enter your info on a random website or you're going to start getting calls from scammy companies.
And here's a story from the LA Times with advice for people who lost homes or businesses during the fire; one of the primary pieces of advice is DON'T RUSH. Take your time to make decisions and look over any paperwork that anyone wants you to sign.
If you need to send people a link to these documents that isn't a tumblr post they're collected here on my website with links to archive.org instead of gdocs.
