"You need me to walk with you?" Asher asked as the two of you stepped out of the carriage, making your way to the palace where Rowan was waiting for you.
In your last life, this had been the day you revealed yourself to him. When you confessed all your feelings, because he came to you crying that he was being forced into an arranged marriage if he didn't pick his own mate. You, having been in love with him for years, and not wanting him to have to marry someone that he didn't care about, that didn't care about him, you admitted the truth. He confessed he had been having feelings for you, and it was such a relief that you were really a woman.
You pushed that memory out of your head. You had lived most of your life as a man. Why had he just assumed that you were really a woman because you physically were sometimes? Your physical body didn't change the fact that you were raised a man. Interacted with society as a man. That you... well, that you felt like a man.
No, that was all too much to deal with right then.
"I'm alright, but if you wanted to come say hi to your brother, I wouldn't be opposed to walking with you," you finally said to Asher when you realized he was still looking expectantly at you.
Asher smiled, smoothing down his ears that had popped up earlier and he still hadn't been able to retract. "Alright. I'll come with you again."
Walking with Asher was comfortable. Familiar. It felt like stepping back in time to when things were simpler. No conversation was needed for you to feel comfortable around him. There was no need to use chatter to fill the uncomfortable silence, because there was no discomfort.
"I miss you," Asher said suddenly, making you stop in your tracks.
Asher smiled shyly, glancing at you out of the corner of your eyes as he too came to a stop. "I only mean because, you know, we haven't had much time to spend together lately. We used to spend every second together and it feels like now we live on seperate planets with how little I see you."
"Yeah," you agreed finally, the word rolling around in your mouth. "I... I miss you too, but we're going hunting this weekend so you won't have to keep missing me."
"I'll always miss you," Asher said, his tail wagging nervously. "The second you go away I miss you."
"You saying things like that will make people think things, Ash," you whispered, a smirk tugging at the corner of your lips.
"People in the palace? Think? Please," he scoffed, unable to stop a grin from spreading across his face. "I think I'm the only one in the entire palace that can do that."
"Shh," you laughed, squeezing his shoulder. "Your brother will hear you."
"Who cares? He won't do anything," Asher snorted.
You covered your mouth to hide a laugh. "Ash-"
"Beta, you're here," Rowan said, cutting through the mirth of the moment. "I've been waiting. Come with me to my office. We have much to discuss."
"Yes sir," you said, immediately bowing your head. You wave to Asher, who looked dejected but forced a smile. His ears flicking back. "I'll send a message to you later, Asher. We'll get this weekend sorted."
While you and Rowan were walking away, a scowl formed on his face. After a few moments, he said, "what is this weekend?"
"Asher and I are going hunting," you rertorted, hands clasped behind your back.
You weren't sure what to say, brows furrowing. Rowan didn't know that you were a female (had a female form?) yet, so what right did he have to be jealous?
"Anyway," he muttered as he opened the door to his office.
The office was exactly as you remembered from before, but you didn't focus on any of that. Your favorite chair was positioned towards his desk so you could sit in it while you talked, but the idea of sitting in that seat, where last time you had confessed everything, made your stomach churn.
"Anyway," you echoed as you stood in front of his desk.
He looked confused but sat down in his desk, looking up at you. "I wanted to talk to you about something."
"Yes, I was told it was urgent Pack Business," you said smoothly, keeping your tone professional and polite.
"It is," Rowan said, his jaw working. Something had already changed, because his next words were not what he spoke last life. "I want to mate you, Y/N. I don't care if you're a male. I'm in love with you. We can adopt pups, or I can give up the position to Asher. I just... I can't live a lie any longer."
