This is 40
I am at the (age) stage of my life where I rewatch a movie and get some kind of extra meaning out of the rewatch. This is not an endorsment of the "Rewatchables" podcast, but it's not not an endorsement of adding additional context to items of culture that you consume. And ya know, just spitting it out on the internet because who gives a shit?
The movie I half-watched while couch-rotting, switching between and scrolling through various feed-based semi-surreal venues of supposed connectedness was "Gladiator" (did you know a sequel is coming out? I looked up some actors and saw that was a search result, I did not investigate any further).
The moment of zen/realization/understanding of the connectedness of all the culture that I've consumed in my life was the meaning behind the mask that MF Doom wore. I just took it at its face value, it was a way for him to hide his identity. He used it as an object to create a new identity and layered a Dr. Doom-type identity on top (? maybe below? (Not sure which is the secret identity)). But like it was also a parallel narrative between his life and Maximus. He was the leader of an army (KMD) and lost everything (RIP Subroc, Fuck Elektra Records) and was thought dead. He came back through the gladiator pits in some far off nowheresville (Open mic nights in NYC) and ended up back in Rome to face the Caesar (?, I still don't really understand Roman stuff, I don't have a passion for Euro-centric history of people talking).
Anyway, coincidentally, I also saw this:
I am probably not going to buy it, but like THIS IS 40! I make enough money slaving away in the capitalist mineshafts that I can burn it to provide enough light/heat/energy to support the arts.
