the way ozempic has finally made the fact that eating healthy and exercising doesn't necessarily make you thin well known and society's reaction to this is not "oh i guess being thin or fat doesn't actually show if you're healthy" but "oh i guess everyone should be on this drug"

I hate that this is infact how ozempic is viewed now because I watched, in real time, how my mothers diabetes got significantly better on ozempic, she didn't start it for weight loss, infact she started it before it even got big for weight loss, but all people can talk about is the weight loss on ozempic and not how good it is as a diabetes medication. Watching my mom find energy and happiness because for once a drug wasn't making her lethargic and miserable was wonderful, she was able to feel better, but then it was spouted as this miracle weight loss drug, and suddenly she just couldn't access it anymore at a good price. Not only has the ozempidemic made fatphobia normal in an already fatphobic society but it's making it harder to access for people who genuinely need it because it's seen as a luxury cosmetic drug.

Something I think ppl who aren't used to it struggle with when it comes to ancient history is that frequently 'we do not and cannot know this' is the only truthful response a historian can give. People severely overestimate how much we actually know about Ancient Rome.

I remember talking to someone at a party once about the debate over Septimius Severus's ethnicity (whole other can of worms) and they asked if genetic testing of his remains was not a way to settle it and I was like oh. Oh okay you are under the impression we have the physical remains of Roman emperors from the second century AD alright then. (We. Do not.)

Can't stress how much of high level study of Ancient History is devoted to trying to make sense of what actually factually happened. When I was at university (10+ years ago now) the discipline was embroiled in the lengthy and ongoing process of trying to unpack not just the biases in ancient sources but the centuries & centuries of biases within the field itself. I don't imagine this process is ever going to Stop. It's not uncommon for historical accounts to be so garbled & contradictory that it's not possible to reconstruct the real events behind them.

Once in an introductory lecture one of my professors was talking about this problem and articulated it very simply as 'we know real things happened between real people, but we aren't sure what they were'. Sums it up really!!

suggestion! When writing a fic set in the USA before, say, 2015, with same-sex marriage, maybe look up when that was legalized in that place. Because as a middle aged person, the presumption that these boys can get casually stroll in and get married throws me right out of a story.

If one of your characters is Shane Hollander, same sex marriage was legalized in his home province when he was 12.

Short timeline

1969: same-sex sex acts decriminalized in private, though remaining indecency laws continued to be used by police to criminalize homosexuality (ex the Toronto bathhouse raids)

1971: We Demand rally, the first gay public protest (August 18, still the date of Pride in Ottawa)

1981: Toronto Bathhouse Raids and resulting protests

1999: civil unions. They had most of the legal rights of marriage but weren't called marriage.

2003-2004 various provinces and territories legalized marriage

2005: Same sex marriage legalized by federal government

You'll notice Alberta didn't legalize before the federal law came in. In early 2005, my friend Christine from Alberta and a bunch of her friends wanted to show that support for gay marriage existed in Alberta, so they sewed a 4 foot tall, 150-meter long rainbow banner which they brought to Parliament Hill to show support for same sex marriage. It encircled all of Parliament Hill!

Pieces of it were used in people's marriages afterwards. There's a piece of it in the Canadian Museum of History.

Actually I think it was mostly sewn by Duff Bond, Christine's awesome mom.

Kid today (probably like 6 years) came up to me and was like "teacher teacher what's your name" and i was like "asha :) also im not a teacher" and he was like "okay asha asha asha I need help" and i was like "okay buddy what's wrong" and he showed me this chunk of metal he'd found sitting in the sun that he was just carrying around and it was super sharp and super hot from the sun and he was like "my hand hurts :(" and i was like "ok. put that down. does it still hurt?" And he did and was like "no." and then he picked it up again and immediately went "my hand hurts :(" again and then I was like "kid. put that down and stop touching it" and he was like "ok but when I touch it my hand hurts :(" and i was like "Please Just Stop Touching That. If you dont touch it your hand won't hurt" and this went on for like another 2 minutes before i got him to realize that if he stopped touching the metal it would not hurt. Kids are so fucking weird man
