But that's the thing -- successful puppetry is all about the details! From the design, to the construction, to how they're acted; every little aspect contributes to the overall believability of the end result. It makes absolute sense to me that this crew would latch onto making the costumes as accurate to timeframe as possible, because that attention to detail is what makes the Muppets themselves so convincing.
