Fabric Moths

The sun bear it's native to the tropical forest in the southeast Asia! And their unique, although kinda scary, morphology suggests that they are actually made for climbing! They make sleeping plataforms high in trees made out of branches and leaves.

They are also quite small, in fact they are the smallest bears out there! They are about 4 to 5 feet tall and go from 6o to 150 pounds (the males are slightly larger than the females).

Sadly, according to the IUCN red list status, they are vulnerable and their current population it's actually decreasing, this is because they habitats are being lost rapidly due to poachers hunt them mercilessly for body parts and fur, and some farmers kill them on site because they often eat crops such as oil palm, coconuts, and bananas. Adult females are also frequently killed so their cubs can be taken and raised as pets. That's why, no matter if they aren't actually photogenic (yes, they look like a human in a bear suit), we need to take a time to appreciate this cool looking bears!!

you have this mysterious fish that  no one really cared about, because everyone assumed they’d gone extinct with the dinosaurs. an interesting footnote, but one of many, many fossil species. 

and later the coelacanth gets some fame as a so-called “missing link” species, a theory which is now outdated (and not accurate for coelacanths) but was really influential at the time. because they have some weird biological quirks – bones in fins! – people were like “oh, they must be a missing link.” so the coelacanth was launched into some fame with the theory of evolution. it got brought up a lot. drawn in old textbooks as proof.

and then a fisherman finds a weird fish off the coast of south africa and calls a local fish expert who had let it be known she was interested in weird finds, and he brings her the (unfortunately badly rotted) corpse and she’s like “well, this is sure weird,” and sends off the bones to other experts, who start to quietly freak out, and rush to south africa, and rewards are offered for another one, any other one, and a few years later one is caught and frozen before rotting.

and it’s this incredible discovery, this extinct creature come to life (the prehistoric coelacanth lived in swamps and marshes in south america; these now are deep ocean fish in and around the indian ocean, but it’s still recognizably the same species)!

but it’s also blue.

I’ve missed this (I’ve been taking a Twitter holiday for the last month, for my own mental health), but I can imagine. I’m sorry. 

I mean, it’s actually not funny. Stoats were introduced to New Zealand by idiots who brought them to try and deal with the rabbits they had previously introduced to New Zealand, who were breeding like rabbits. And the stoats went “hurrah! A land where birds have no predators and some of them even lay their eggs in burrows! Let us feast in this new land!” So dealing with stoats is a real problem.

not only are stoats lose in New Zealand, this poster is talking about the Predator-free islands - small island off the coast of New Zealand that are nature reserves, many having populations of animals extinct on the mainland due to predators or extremely vulnerable to them - eg nesting grounds for endangered birds and such. Even ONE predator here could wreak havoc to a native species with such a small, at-risk population, AND GOD FORBID if a breeding pair somehow gets loose. 

Those little fuckers may look cute and innocent but they are VICIOUS and go after wildlife not even to eat them, but for fun, they’ll leave killed animals (they seem to kill, at least the one that lived in my area, by tearing their prey’s throat out) on our lawn otherwise untouched. Just. Dead animals, not even killed for food cause they weren’t eaten. WTF stoats?? Who hurt you??

Then there’s -excuse my French - FUCKING possums. Those little shits decided that “when we eat leaves, lets do it to trees who can’t support having so much damage done to them! Also, LETS JUST COMPLETELY CHANGE OUR DIET FROM VEGETARIAN TO OMNIVOROUS BC FUCK YOUUUU BIRDS WE’RE GOING TO EAT YOUR EGGS” bitch, why

tangent aside, I know stoats, ferrets, rats, mice, rabbits and possums are cute, but man you have to get over it. They don’t belong here and they’re driving native species extinct. I know its a harsh take to have little to no sympathy for these invasive buggers, but there’s an entire country’s ecosystem at stake!! All the birds, bugs, plants and reptiles!! More and more of them are being driven extinct every year!! Keep your goddam cat inside if you live in New Zealand  it’s killing the native birds too!!

On a related note, next time you travel to new Zealand, don’t complain about the strict restrictions on what you can take in, AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON’T SMUGGLE STUFF YOU’RE NOT ALLOWED TO BRING IN. Bacteria, tiny bugs and other small organisms can still be invasive and cause just as much havoc, and those protections are there for a reason!! FOLLOW THEM!

We need to take responsibility for our local and global ecosystems. We need to look after, restore, and protect them. Not introducing non native species and reducing the impact of those allready killing native wildlife is a great way to help.
