I would like to share the story of a very understandable but unfortunate mistake i made at work recently
So I'm weeding our ancient and terrible collection of children's books for the first time in possibly ever, and I'm making a decision about a book about migrant workers by Sandra Weiner, called Small Hands, Big Hands. And I'm not 100% sure and I go to just see if there's anything out there about this book's being notable in any way so I do an open web search for
"small hands big hands weiner"
And then I look at my results for a moment
and then at last I somberly add to the end of my search, "BOOK"
I have one like that:
In mathematics, you often consider the two-dimensional plane - you know, the idealised flat two-dimensional object that extends infinitely - which can be real or complex (doesn't matter what that means)
On this, you can perform a mathematical operation called a "blow-up" (resulting in a more complicated geometry)
I needed to look up a formula related to this, so I confidently typed into the search bar:
"Blow up real plane"
The results were not what I wanted and I am not sure if I'm on a terror watchlist now.
This reminds me of my corsetmaker days when i found myself searching for "extra thick boning."
Today's wasp of the day is Ropalidia jemmae!
Credits: photo 1, photo 2
You may remember the extra green green wasp Ropalidia saussurei. Now, its close relative Ropalidia jemmae may only have a touch of green on their bodies, but what makes them special is their architectural talent. Wasps within Ropalidia have quite a range in styles when it comes to how each species constructs their paper nests. Many, like our beloved greenie R. saussurei, decide to play it discrete and camouflage their nest by using lichen to have it blend in with the tree. R. jemmae gets extra crafty by flipping their nest around so that the open cells face the tree instead of out. This is extra costly both resource and time wise but provides shield-like protection and effectively mimics the look of lichen, hiding the nest in plain sight
WASP BLAST! I got bored, and crammed together every single wasp drawing I have done so far. A collage, if you will. Enjoy!
So cute! I love all the different shapes and colors :D
These 3 are my favorites (a hard choice indeed!)
Personal story under the cut
This reminds me of elementary school; one of my school's playgrounds had a plastic slide set that was infested with these fuzzy, black, flying ant-like bugs (I thought they were termites for some reason, but now Im pretty sure they were wasps).
I used to go to sit on the slide and pet them, they were very docile and "friendly"
I loved them, they were so soft and fuzzy 🥰
I changed my mind, this ones my favorite
I cant believe I almost missed her, look at that face 😭
Way ahead of you! 😜
My love for Thomas the green moray eel who lives at the New England Aquarium continues and grows and knows no bounds. He is my muse. This is a plow book I made featuring my guy for my art books class, I love how I can fold him up in many funky ways

Being an advocate for any Hymenopteran that isn't a honeybee is so exhausting. I saw someone post a picture of a queen Vespa crabro on Reddit, and to my dismay, I saw a comment stating to "kill every one because they kill honeybees which are vital to the ecosystem." I tried to politely educate them, but these situations often seem futile, as they retaliated with a very rude and ignorant comment. Someone else agreed with me, to which I replied and said that honeybees compete with native pollinators, and can spread diseases to native bees and wasps as well. I also defended wasps and native pollinators because they are more crucial to the ecosystem. For some reason that comment got downvoted. I just find it amazing how so many people are uneducated when it comes to nature in general, but especially towards wasps and other Hymenopterans. It's definitely an uphill battle, and quite discouraging. I couldn't just ignore that comment however, since it was totally misinformed, and I felt it was necessary to provide some education, even if it fell on deaf ears. It will be so refreshing to see the day where someone posts a photo of a wasp and the general consensus isn't to immediately eradicate it. I'm so tired.
Kind of fucked thinking about the fact that there is one single American legally authorized to research the critically endangered pygmy raccoon in Mexico and it is, in fact, the same person who did Dashcon.
This person is also this person
And is currently the only person from the United States legally permitted to research the critically endangered pygmy raccoons (Procyon pygmaeus) in Cozumel, Mexico.
For reference, this is me, BTW! I was 15 when I started Dashcon and 17 when it actually happens, and now study tourism’s impact on the critically endangered pygmy raccoon. I’ve been researching them before now, but due to Mexico’s laws, I’ve only been allowed to do data collection from abroad (so think surveys to tourists and video analysis on social media.) But now I’m authorized for in situ research!! Yippee! I even got a grant through my university as well to fund the whole project 🥺
This is the reason this hellsite is truly a homesite. We grow here. You can go back and see how it happened. I was a Bachelor’s student when I started my tumblr. Now I’m an Associate Professor and Curator, with my own lab and Denmark’s national collection of 70,000ish reptile and amphibian specimens in my care.
For anyone interested, here’s a little video of me walking a geoduck bed. It might not mean much to most but this is a beautiful sight to me.

Non-binary flag made from ladybugs! (And one lady beetle)
Watercolour, gouache and Procreate
Commission Info
From left to right: (near as I can tell, anyway)
Propylea quatuordecimpunctata
Anatis labiculata
Coleomegilla maculata
Something from the subfamily chilocorinae, maybe Chilocorus nigritus?
All are members of the beetle family Coccinellidae- so all are Lady Beetles. Ladybug is just a term that shows up in the common names of a lot of different species within the family!
Propylea quatuordecimpunctata, fourteen-spotted lady beetle
Anatis labiculata, fifteen-spotted lady beetle
Coleomegilla maculata, pink spotted lady beetle or twelve-spotted lady beetle
Last one may be Halmus chalybeus, steelblue lady beetle (which is also subfamily Chilocorinae)
they are awarding me an honorary doctorate for my work on tumblr.com
this makes me want to cry
First of all, “…they were surrounded on all sides by echoes and images of themselves, in a world where image and object had not yet torn themselves apart” is one of the most poetic phrasings I’ve ever heard.
Second, here’s the original source, “What the caves are trying to tell us” by Sam Kriss.
Third, the original opens with: “Every so often, I get the urge to drag someone into a cave, and show them something unspeakable.”
I had another point, but it got lost in the artful prose of this article.
I feel like “every so often, I get the urge to drag someone into a cave and show them something unspeakable” is something that’s okay for a paleolithic cave art expert to say, but like, absolutely no one else
A little obsessed with the "utterly burnt out & can't quite figure out how to make it work in this in this economy" depiction of Mario in the concept art.
Look at him. He's so tired.

How an angelfish gets a CT scan at the Denver Zoo
Watching the Ultraman Teo English dub (very well done, as is par for the course for TsuPro's Ultra dubs for the last few years), and they continue to do an amazing job with translating onscreen text.
