There are multiple chapters that are set in hospitals where the characters are attempting to recover from injuries that never fully heal. I must once again stress that my experience in WWI was perfectly normal.
There is a giant horrible mudplain full of unrecoverable and perfectly preserved dead bodies that the characters have to walk through in a land where the air is poisoned gas, and on a compLETELY UNRELATED NOTE: WWI WAS TOTALLY FINE AND NORMAL!!
And why are you all saying lotr was also a way for me to process the trauma and horror I experienced watching my own sons and students fight in WWII. Just because one of my characters longs to fight alongside her loved ones to save her country instead of being told to stay put, keep calm, and carry on while the world around her completely falls apart and all hope seems lostâŚ..made to silently bear witness to the death and destruction of her people and the lands she is unable to protectâŚ.
Yes, I began writing these books during WWII while my sons were actively on the front lines, but my experience watching the young people I loved and taught dying to save me and my country from invasion in WWII bc my generation did not in fact end all wars WAS TOTALLY FINE AND NORMAL!!

This very production of Orpheus & Eurydice is now available to stream, free, for the month of June.
everyone talks about how strong and great Aragorn was for refusing the ring when Frodo offered it to him as if this man has not spent his entire life dodging leadership and responsibilities like bullets in the matrix đ

love it when shakespeare's mysterious and dodgy. something is rotten in the state of denmark. something wicked this way comes. do you think he just didn't wanna conjure up a word for it
Shakespeare character: the vibes are rancid
I don't know who needed to hear this today but this is your reminder that Polonius đ From đ Hamlet đ Is đ Not đ An đ Idiot. Is he a genius? No. Does he think he's way smarter than he actually is? Yes. Does he love to run on at the mouth? Yes. But if you actually listen to what he's saying, listen to his speech to Laertes, especially, especially listen to his speech to Reynaldo, he's dumb like the fox. He's getting older now, but I think he was very good at gathering information for most of his life. And his actions reflect this. His telling Ophelia to dump Hamlet... It's patriarchy, obviously, and he's coming at it from a place of selfishness, his reputation, but the observation itself never seemed ridiculous to me. Like if I were Ophelia's friend I would also be telling her "you know he can't marry you right? You know he's gonna have to marry a princess? You know if he gets you pregnant you're totally fucking screwed right? Are you being careful? Do you promise you're being careful?" He's also... on Hamlet's trail you know? "Though this be madness; there's method in it." I think it's a better story if Polonius isn't a bumbling idiot but instead is a competent but aging advisor. It adds a layer of threat to story if Hamlet isn't running laps around a total idiot, but deftly staying ahead of a smart man who is sniffing him out.
the scene contains two people who are BOTH feigning some degree of madness/senility to make the other suspect them less and honestly itâs brilliant. Hamlet is turning Poloniusâ own game against him, but heâs also very much risking Polonius seeing right through him because he knows the game so well
yayyyy
Basic Fandom Etiquette Everyone Needs to Remember:
Creators do not owe anyone content. Do not ask writers when they will update.
If an author did not ask for criticism , do not give criticism.
Read the tags carefully before reading a fanfic.
If you ignored the tags and were upset, that is your responsibility, not the creatorâs.
Disliking a ship does NOT give you the right to attack people who enjoy it.
Do not tell authors or shippers that their ship is âdisgusting,â âwrong,â or âshouldnât exist.â Shipping fictional characters is not a moral failing.
No one is obligated to justify why they ship two fictional characters.
Headcanons are PERSONAL interpretations, not universal truth.
Dark themes in fiction do not equal real life beliefs or intentions.
Leaving kudos or short positive comments genuinely matters.
Not every fanwork is made for you, and that is okay.
Scrolling past content you dislike is better than engaging negatively
Enjoying a fandom later than others does not make someone less of a fan.
Disliking a fanfic does not entitle you to announce that to its creator. Sending hate comments to authors is NEVER justified, even if you disliked the work.

having anxiety is like being given permanent unwanted custody of a halter arabian. like okay buddy is it panic time again. cool you probably need more exercise and an apple and then maybe you'll calm down.
taking my stupid walks for my stupid mental health with my stupid hypervigilant brain horse
thoroughly enjoying the notes on this post because it's equal parts people with anxiety going "yeah that's what it's like" and people with arabians going "yeah that's what they're like"
âThe daily routine of most adults is so heavy and artificial that we are closed off to much of the world. We have to do this in order to get our work done. I think one purpose of art is to get us out of those routines. When we hear music or poetry or stories, the world opens up again. Weâre drawn in â or out â and the windows of our perception are cleansed, as William Blake said. The same thing can happen when weâre around young children or adults who have unlearned those habits of shutting the world out.â

Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as âproblematicâ in class and our professor was like, âThatâs cool, but âproblematicâ doesnât really mean anything. It means that the thing youâre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatâs not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itâs not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youâre trying to say that this is bad, but you donât want to say âbad.â Is that right?â
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the âbadâ thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, âIâm uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.â
Once we stopped calling things âproblematicâ and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, âthatâs racistâ or âthatâs misogynisticâ or âew capitalism grossâ out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, âUhhh... Iâm not sure whatâs so bad?â and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canât help but think of this professor being like, âGood starting point, now letâs get specific.â I think when we have to commit to saying âthatâs ___â it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weâre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itâs art, and it should be full of problems, because thatâs what art is.
I once saw an article put it this way: often "this is problematic" is used to shut down discussion of a thing, by casting a sweeping but vague judgement. But really if used at all it should start a discussion about what the problem is.
âDo you like that show?â
âI certainly enjoy the self indulgent version of it I wrote in my head after it began to disappoint me.â

Fanfiction is supposed to be cringy. You're allowed to write bad. You're allowed to be cringe. Fanfiction is supposed to be self indulgent. You're allowed to be cringe. Let yourself be cringe. Fanfiction is supposed to be fun. Stop putting arbitrary rules on yourself and be free.
