Got to be one of my favourite films of all time. Originally I thought it was good fun, pretty funny, didn’t think twice about anything else. That was before I got into photography & video. I lost count a long time ago of how many times I must’ve seen it now, every time still picking out something new. The writing, delivery, direction, composition... I love every aspect of this film.

Far too many great frames, but Tumblr only allows 10 images 💁‍♂️

Baby Driver

I bloody love this movie. I saw it three times in the cinema, and I saw a different film with each visit.

The first I saw was a heist movie. Cunningly planned jobs masterminded by Doc, bringing together unlikely heathens to rob banks and post offices - all getting their cut except Baby who’s paying his debt behind the wheel.

The second time I saw a musical. Every beat of this film is choreographed so perfectly to Baby’s soundtrack, I honestly think it gives La La Land a run for its money. Indeed music is a driving force in most of Edgar Wright’s films, but Baby Driver raised the bar to 11. I had the Spotify playlist on repeat for months in the car.

The third movie I saw was a car chase romance. Baby has to do what he does best to keep his love interest from harm - drive. The film is both of those - a romance, and a car chase film - but it truly is an homage to the classic car chases that inspired this movie into being. The Driver, Blues Brothers, Freebie and the Bean, Bullitt, The French Connection - all are present.

I’m still so happy that this film exists. This is the film Edgar Wright had always wanted to make, and walking out on Antman really gave him the freedom & determination to make it. With Bill Pope in his arsenal, his love of film gave us Baby Driver - and I’m thankful for that.

Prisoners

I re-watched Prisoners last week having only seen it once a few years ago.

The first time the story gripped me from the off and it stuck with me for weeks.

The second time, the lucid imagery hasn’t left my mind at all.

Every shot is crafted as astutely as the story, adding to the suspense and bringing real fear and emotion to the viewer. Obviously the performances from Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Melissa Leo & company are terrific - I’d say among the best of each actor - but the arresting visual storytelling of Villeneuve & Deakins is second to none.

If you’ve not seen “Prisoners”, I implore you to do so.

Chester - Sights & Sounds at Christmas

I'm really proud of this little sequence. I filmed it all totally on a whim while out Christmas shopping in Chester, and got so carried away I forgot to do any shopping 🤦‍♂️

I especially liked playing around with the ambient audio to match the video - the video is mostly slowed down, but the audio remains at normal speed.

All shot within 2 hours, edited in about 5 hours.

Shot on Sony a7iii in S-Log2, graded using Phantom LUTs.

I've spent the last two weeks watching nothing but Roger Deakins' work, trying my best to figure out what exactly draws me in so easily - and I honestly couldn't put my finger on it.

I think he explains it perfectly himself here - he just follows the script, learns the characters and interprets the mood of the story perfectly through lighting and simple, effective camera movement.
