Engineering: The Cantalloc Aqueducts and Puquios System

The Cantalloc aqueducts, constructed by the Nazca culture approximately 2,000 years ago, are located about 4 km north of the modern city of Nazca in southern Peru. Part of a larger network of underground and semi-underground aqueducts known as Puquios, the system originally comprised more than 46 structures. Today, 32 of these aqueducts remain operational, demonstrating remarkable long-term functionality.

In this arid region, surface rivers flow for only around 40 days per year, creating severe challenges for sustained agriculture. The Nazca engineers developed the Puquios to capture and channel groundwater to agricultural fields, enabling the reliable cultivation of crops such as cotton, beans, potatoes, and maize. The structures consist of carefully engineered underground channels lined with stone paving and reinforced with huarango (Prosopis pallida) wood, a durable local material resistant to decay in dry conditions.

A distinctive feature of the system is the presence of spiral-shaped ventilation shafts that descend into the ground. These shafts serve multiple purposes: they facilitate airflow to maintain water quality, allow access for maintenance, and help regulate pressure within the subterranean conduits. The precise geometric design, consistent gradients, and integration of mathematical and architectural principles reflect advanced knowledge of hydrology, geology, and civil engineering.

I’d like to add this photo I took last night in Victoria of the statue of Captain Cook. Though I myself am not indigenous, I 100% agree that these murderers, kidnappers and rapists shouldn’t have huge statues and plaques that decorate them and say how “great” they were.

I went to a “Cancel Canada Day” event and burst into tears - not because I was surprised to learn of the unmarked graves (survivors told us they were there. Our government pushed it aside, and we let them), but because seeing all the people gathered in mourning drove it home: They. Were. Children.

This is my country’s legacy - and it’s not history. The last schools closed during my lifetime. My Father went to school with students who lived at the local residential school, after it was changed to a boarding house (read: holding centre) for indigenous youth who went to local schools.
