idk if i told the full story on here but i signed up for a research study where they were testing a new opioid, and it was supposed to be up to 5 injections increasing the dose to see what people could tolerate
i got the first dose and almost immediately fainted. they had to call in a whole medical team and it was a huge fucking deal
i was kicked out of the study and got a phone call later where they were supposed to tell me what the drug was, so i could avoid it in the future. they told me it was saline water. a placebo. i fainted from the placebo effect.
anyway, it's been a few months and i just got an email from the same department asking me to be a research participant in a new study: testing the effects of open-label placebo.
open label placebo is when the subjects and the researchers all know it's a placebo. they're testing the power of my mind. my power to imagine anything.
i like to think that they chose me for this specifically based on their past experience with me. "get the guy who fainted like a little bitch boy from saline water." anyway i just submitted all my info and i'm looking forward to getting started.
i lied a little bit ok because the most embarrassing thing about this was that the fainting wasn't even right after. it was 10 minutes later. i had fully gotten the injection, walked back to the study room, sat down, and started doing the preliminary questions with the grad student.
i was partway through answering a question when i felt a rush of heat travel up my core. i said out loud "...whoa. that's strong." and then my head dropped. the grad student called everybody in and they leaned back my chair, blood pressure cuff, etc etc.
they called in the MD who did the whole "do you know where you are? do you know where you work?" questionnaire. i got confused and couldn't answer where I worked for like 10 seconds.
because this was a double-blind study, they were also convinced that i'd had an adverse reaction to the opioid, and that i wasn't safe to go home. they made me stay over an hour until "all the effects" had worn off and for my confusion to go away. i was completely experiencing opioid-like loopy-ness paired with weak muscle sensations. it was fucking wild.
anyway. yes thank you to everyone in the notes, this is just like cops hearing the word "fentanyl" and fainting.

Nature Documentary: these deep sea creatures can withstand crushing pressures of thousands of pounds per square inch!
Me: they’re not withstanding a goddamn thing. The pressure is a part of them. Their interiors and exteriors are equalized. Just because your respiratory system is built around a pair of fragile poppable bubbles-
You don’t know me
hopefully i'll get to do something other than endure soon. that would be really nice

Kinda sick of jesters. We got too many jesters this year
This is how I feel
Rest in peace Akihiro Miwa (1935-2026)
I haven't seen anyone talking about this and just wanted to make a quick post on here.
Akihiro Miwa recently passed away peacefully june 20th, and was not only a drag queen and a queer icon, but also the japanese voice of Arceus in the movie Arceus and the jewel of life, as well as the witch from Howl's moving castle and Moro from Princess Mononke.
Rest in peace and thank you for the wonderfull impact you made in this world.
Also worth noting that Miwa identified as "genderless" in later in life interviews and appeared "en femme" basically 24/7 for much of her life
Like, I know its frowned upon to assign genders to historic queer figures but you have to understand that in the 50s and 60s the line between trans woman and drag queen barely existed, and given her chosen presentation for most of her life and own statements on gender, I see her as a trans icon
Anyway watch her play a femme fatale in the 1969 melodrama Black Rose Mansion, one of my all time favorite films!
Thoughts about Sherlock Holmes, having now listened to several of the audiobooks of the original series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
First and foremost, Sherlock is actually nice? Like, he is never deliberately rude to people. He can be quite blunt, direct and to the point, but he's never going out of his way to be rude or dismissive of people. (He has immense amounts of cheek and sass about the competencies of the police officers once they are no longer present, but he is always perfectly polite to them when they are speaking.)
He is especially kind to people in the cases that they are working on. He tries to be respectful of people, particularly those who have been traumatized by the event that they have just experienced. He is very kind to women, and has great admiration for smart and competent women that he encounters in his work, regardless of their social class. (In the adventure of the copper beeches, he allows the woman to take a suspicious job, because she is in desperate need of the money, but makes sure that he is available to her night or day in case she runs into any trouble.)
Sherlock genuinely likes John. They are actually best friends, and Sherlock treats him as such. Sherlock is proud of John when John figures things out and offers him sincere praise. Sherlock genuinely enjoys John's company and makes a point to express that fact on multiple occasions.
The cases are often simple, but never stupid. The cases are interesting to read, and it's satisfying as a reader when you figure something out alongside the characters but before the big reveal. They're not trying to twist you in knots, tricking you into thinking that your first thought is going to be absolutely wrong because it's way too obvious. The stories make sense, but are layered with more complexity and clues that you might not have caught.
Sherlock does a lot of moral questioning and struggles with some of the implications of the cases, such as the adventure of the Abbey Grange. In that case, a young woman's admirer murders the woman's abusive husband. Sherlock makes a point of not telling the police about it because he thinks that that would be the wrong thing to do. He lets the man go and encourages him and the young woman to make a better life for themselves. Sherlock quite openly struggles with the results of his cases, the implications of them, their impact on him and the people around him.
Sherlock openly admits to his faults. And not in an “oh I'm so much better than you all but I have to keep my mind occupied somehow” kind of way, he is quite willing to admit where he struggles and where he considers himself to be weaker, and often asks for help.
John Watson is very much an equal partner, and Sherlock is openly quite reliant on John for a lot of things. Obviously, Sherlock's detective abilities are the star of the show and that is what Watson focuses on in his recounting, but Sherlock actively seeks out John's involvement and opinions on the cases, and relies on John's protection and support on many occasions.
Anyways. I'm not entirely sure where the idea of “Sherlock Holmes the genius asshole” comes from but it's very distinctly NOT the impression I get from the original stories.

We need an alternative to doesthedogdie cause they’ve started fucking paywalling warnings that include timestamps for triggering moments.
Like what the fuck
I just checked and
Need to read about trigger warnings? Please click the whimsical dog icon for more information!
I recommend Unconsenting Media. Not as comprehensive as DoesTheDogDie, but if sexual assault is a trigger for you, it’s a good resource
rbing again real quick--i and other(s?) have noted in other rbs that this is almost never done. it's for very few properties, and it's only for timestamped warnings that are done in-house, not by users.
there are still timestamps available for warnings on those same triggers for those same properties. just bc there's a paywall on something doesn't mean other comments and timestamps can't be posted or read for free on that property or that trigger.
see here:
i don't have an account and haven't paid for anything on the site, so all of those comments are what i'm seeing for free.
i had to search and search to find anything that had paywalls, and had to resort to looking at The Substance, as referenced here. i've been using the site regularly since the op posted and have never organically encountered a paywall on anything, including on very popular properties.
i don't see any reason to stop using the site--everything is still available for free. they just have added another way for some ppl to choose to pay some $ (in addition to ads), since this is a completely free service, and no website is free to maintain.
as an example, someone with the money could pay to see the timestamps, and then leave a free comment with the same timestamps for others if they wanted to.
I've seen this post on my dash a few times now and I want to boost this specific addition. I've emailed the owner of the site to get clarification on this, and I was told the motivation behind this. He wanted to start paying some people to memorize all 200+ triggers on the site, sit down and watch popular movies/shows to thoroughly analyze whenever any trigger pops up, and note down timestamps and details of them. Ads unfortunately do not cover this (they probably only cover the site's base upkeep), so the subscription service is specifically to pay these people. Community comments have never been paywalled and are still accessible.
He thanked me for my feedback when I expressed confusion and concern about the paywalled comments being mixed in with the free comments, and has since updated the site to make them clearly distinct, along with a preview of what the paid comments look like:
He was very transparent about it all and very kind. He also said this was his mistake and is trying to clear it up. Please continue to use DoesTheDogDie.com, it is an excellent resource and there is nothing else like it!
one of the many reasons to insist upon chronological timelines is that it's much, much harder to scroll forever if you can catch up with yourself. if you can run out of tumblr because you reach yesterday, that is a good and helpful prompt to do something else.
