it's weird that so few people seem to know that mormons largely run the troubled teen industry. ppl will imply that I'm religiously intolerant when I badmouth mormonism and it's like well. they child trafficked me. so. lol
it's why Utah has the worst youth rights laws in the country; bc the troubled child industry lobby fights all legislation designed to give kids more rights. it's a state-supported industry of child abuse run by the Mormon church π€·

As another LDS person (or, a mormon), please elaborate on what you're talking about. There are reasons for things that I can politely explain if given the information you have.

One thing I've had a hard time explaining to my still very active Mormon family is that the queer community still experiences hurt from the church and its members. And because of that, they may distance themselves from anyone who is still an actively practicing member.
My sil is frustrated that at UVU people see she's active and assume she's homophobic. My mom is hurt on behalf of her friend who's child is obviously transitioning but won't come out to her. My brother doesn't understand why it took me an entire year and being two states away to tell him I was queer.
These are not isolated incidents. The Mormon church actively is against queer people, talks are being given from the pulpit about how we are sinful and fallen creatures. So no, we won't run to you with open arms. That is the baseline queer people start with in regards to the Mormon church. You have to do the work to show us you are trustworthy and safe. And until that happens, queer people will be hesitant and weary and I get you think that sucks but your church is bigoted and you cannot blame people for not wanting to come out to you instantly even when "you can tell".

Quitmormon.com (the pro-bono legal team who made it so the Mormon church couldn't stalk me after I left the church) is fundraising to get a full-time, paid lawyer, AND provide free mental health services to people leaving the Mormonism (mostly LGBT people and our allies)

Getting a lotta queer//stake posts on my dash rn and I just wanna make my stance on the topic clear. Yes you can be queer and Christian. Yes you can be queer and believe in a God like the one the Mormon church talks about. But the LDS church itself is a violent, bigoted institution and I do not want to associate with anyone who thinks they can fix/change it. Worship your god all you want, but you cannot profess yourself to be an ally to marginalized communities while belonging to and believing in a church that directly harms them. Joseph Smith was a con man and a pedophile. Brigham Young was a violently bigoted man. The foundations on which the church was built are inherently harmful. You cannot change that, no matter how progressive your personal politics may be. I know it's tempting to try, I wanted so badly to reconcile these two parts of myself as well. But sometimes it really is one or the other. I'm sorry. Your god will not damn you for leaving, and if you think he would, you should really question why.
