You want to treat housing as an investment ? Housing literally becomes public debt this way , which is like a rather safe investment that is also not shooting too fast past inflation , because it's used to check inflation ...

No , because that's not making a significant chunk of your livelihood from it , if anything you're paying for a future service like your retirement , which is if anything something that should be covered socially .

Because they do so by gatekeeping essential services , and profiting off an essential part of any economy that being housing supply ,

Essentially liquidity for people to move ,

It's all well and good having the legal freedom to travel , and having your infrastructure of choice to move there ...

But if once you get there you lack shelter to sleep , clean themselves , eat and do most other things people need to live acceptable lifestyles , Then freedom of movement is virtual .

And since we saw from history that privatisation makes services worse,

and nationalization actually brings improvements in service and efficiency .

It's better to nationalise it ,

To double up : this class of people that profits off others rent, will also use their free time and disposable income to push for laws that benefit them personally, they wouldn't be rich if they were doing charity , meaning that yeah the rules will always tilt to their advantage and will tend to tilt to their advantage eventually .

I live somewhere humid and insanely hot , like 96° hot. And the air conditioner broke during the hottest days of the year several times. He would get the cheapest option available , hire whoever owed him money (not even people experienced with air conditioning) , and make them replace it. It would keep breaking. (Also he even hired people with no experience to replace our roof since they all owed him money , and they left my dad to do all the work while they smoked meth. I'm not even joking)

One day , cuz the house was getting to 85° (and we have no shade to cover our house) , we had my brother and his childhood friend , BOTH ENGINEERS , fix the air conditioning. It was so bad that it took them 1+ days and numerous hours , because the insulation was also FUCKED.

My landlords response ? Raising our monthly rent by I think $100 , and saying he refuses to help us next time the air conditioning breaks. My parents hate our landlord , but say this is the best landlord they've had. He raised rent again ON MY MOMS BIRTHDAY (they knew it was her bday btw) and implied they were going to start doing this more often.

Also , he took the gutters away over 5 years ago and STILL hasn't replaced them. He said he was going to renew the carpet TWELVE YEARS AGO , and DOESNT ALLOW US TO HAVE INDOOR PETS TO " not ruin the carpet " HE NEVER FUCKING INSTALLED. HE THREATENED TO EVICT US OVER THIS. THE CARPET IS BROWN WHEN IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE WHITE. THE FLOORS ARE SLOWLY FALLING APART CUZ OF WATER BUILDUP BC WE DONT HAVE FUCKING GUTTERS.

Whenever we decided to build our own fence and decorations in the yard , our landlord RAISED THE RENT because our work " made the property value go up. "

Finally also he only rented this house out to my dad cuz he didn't want an interracial couple renting it :/. Deadass , when an interracial couple arrived after my dad got a tour , our landlord switched up immediately and said " oh sorry , I already accepted this guy's offer. " Piece of shit.

THEN my sister has had problems with her landlord too , but with her heater. The thermostat broke , which means that , if you used the heater at all , it would NEVER stop going up. My sister has a disability heavily dictated by temp , rheumatoid arthritis , and she would have to sleep in the FREEZING cold because otherwise it was a fire hazard.

She emailed her landlord everyday for WEEKS , and they did nothing. It took my MOM harassing the landlord too in order for them to do anything. When that is a BIG problem , especially when one of your tenants has a disability so bad that your negligence can make it near impossible for them to leave bed.
