i am having an art conundrum
how do you decide what color for inside of mouth when making a comic? like for a simple shape. how do you know when to put inside mouth color vs teeth color? is it vibes? pls sir i beg you advice if you have any thank you
you know, i've never really Thought about this, but i have thought about it, if that makes sense. you got me to draw this just to see how the differences feel.
i think it is ultimately vibe and also what tone you're trying to impart to the character's dialogue, and what emotion they're expressing.
like, A gives a feeling of grinning, she finds what she's saying funny or clever. B looks a little off for its lack of teeth, but it's definitely a different tone. C is just normal talking. and meanwhile D is just bad to look at.
then we go down to E, and the all-white mouth does look a little strange, almost like she's got a mouthful of marshmallow. you don't read it as her teeth at all. i've seen this done usually in anime and manga arty styles, and it tends to look okay there. F looks pretty normal without the teeth. her expression feels more exaggerated, she's really amused with herself. again, like C, the presencec of teeth makes G look more like normal talking. and H... well, H actually doesn't look too bad. it'd probably be better if she's further away.
yeah i dunno, it's definitely vibes. just Look at what you're drawing and think to yourself 'does this match what the character is saying and how they're feeling?' and if the answer is yes than you're probably right. it'll be second nature eventually.
thank you for answering so thoroughly!!! i shall keep vibing it out and practicing!
