Just watched Adam Conover (of Adam Ruins Everything) make such a solid point that I think we should spread far and wide. Yes, having AI write your emails is lazy, sure, but people love being lazy. We need to really emphasize that sending AI emails (or using AI responses on social media, or publishing AI flyers, or or or) is rude.
It's rude. You're making someone take their time to read something you couldn't bother to write. You're telling them they were so unimportant you couldn't be bothered to actually take the time to say something yourself. And frankly, you're lying about it while you're at it.
It's rude.
Can't let British people have air conditioning because first they'd call it something twee like "the climate fixer" and then in 20 years they'll call it "the climb" or "the climmy"
French kids would call it "le climot", frustrating language officials who would prefer they call it "machine pour le contrôle du climat froide à l'interieure de l'édifice"
i think there’s something kind of neat about the way arr is written a bit in that early 2010s very edgy “apolitical protag” life is super arbitrary and cheap way for the most part…like hearing about adventurer parties you briefly met all dying brutally in copperbell mines & edda’s entire situation, and much of the poverty, prejudice, and general other sufferings all throughout eorzea are seen as nothing more than an immutable prop of the world that, most importantly, has nothing to do with you beyond an isolated quest. this still continues a bit onto heavensward, starting with the early coerthas quests, learning about the way ishgard frames heretics and tortures them into madness and how soldiers die for nothing and lie about their deaths to their parents, deluded in their beliefs and whatever. people ate each other when strongholds were abandoned to the horde. you hear about it, you turn in the quest, you move on. still, you do all these little duties, meet all these people, and some of them tell you some things that are oddly poignant or honest or grateful or funny or meaningful in return…
you fetch a ring from snowcloak and learn about some dude’s love through his belief and actions, you go check out a dead goobbue and you get someone empathizing very eloquently with your wanderings in return, you throw a bucket of water over a miscreant’s head at a bar and the duskwight guy getting targetted on feels a little less alone in that moment, you hunt some birds and learn the bitterness of workers getting booted out of costa del sol by the wealthy. like you do stuff, anything, and it matters to somebody and you gain a place in the world through every connection you make….through them, this world you knew nothing about slowly starts to make more sense. and even if it all comes off as arbitrary and shitty, you still get curious about their lives, and what they’ll say to you next. the scions are really pretty much the same, but they stay a little longer; their sense of a greater purpose ever hovers in your periphery. the soldiers you fought with are all euthanized for being tempered, livia massacres the waking sands…again, no different from all the other tragedies, but then again, you remember their conviction and through the echo even bore witness to some of their last words and wishes. you understand it happened because of something. it may not hit for some people yet, but these things are already the wol’s tragedies as well.
and then you meet ysayle, who calls you a fucking idiot and leaves. LMFAOOOOO
and then HW hits and the whole bloody banquet ordeal and suddenly, you are taken in by one of those random people you helped out. and like stuff really starts to matter because of this connection you have to this friend of yours, because once again, your involvement was returned, and this time when you reallllyyy needed it. and it’s not just a one off favor this time, it’s like…I care about the household my friend grew up in, I care about his duties at work, I care about the society he lives in and the framework in which he’s expected to be born and die in, and how to free him and the people he knows, the people in the place that took you in, from this endless war. that arbitary suffering suddenly becomes your personal concern where it used to be a backdrop. like you were already very much a part of eorzea by the time of operation archon, but this time, you’re not in it because you’re a hero, you’re in it because you kind of owe it to someone. and then you think about that random woman who called you a fucking idiot a little while back and you understand. you get that this could happen to anybody with anyone at any time, this giving a shit so much, because you inevitably met them, and that the same thing happened to her. she bears the echo as well, so she knows it very much like you do. You get that it was impossible to live in that selfish, detached, apathetic, mindless way you began. you get that you’d be an idiot to not try and understand the truth of your circumstances.
FOR MEEEEE [pic of long skeleton] personally this point came way early in arr due to a select few quests to where I felt like my character really was obligated to the world of this game for the experiences they gave me alone, and because I was personally invested in edda & the ala mhigans & the tribes, but I can recognize that HW is when the writers themselves switch gears in this regard. And as time goes on irl, when some people slowly start saying, hey actually caring about some shit is good, this is reflected directly into the story. the wol from this point only ever gets more deeply entangled in the lives of others, and their journey is all the more richer for it. If you gave me 2.0 alone, I never would have believed that we would get to liberate ala mhigo, but that’s where we went. And with shb, would the adventurer you were, who took quests off the board for the reward, for “a living”, risk your life and soul for this random ass world you dropped into now? and this reaches its zenith in EW where it’s like…you saving the world is also saving yourself. and the idea that heroism is not anything more than recognizing and offering hope for the pain & joy of others, who all live in this world you love so much, and seeing it in yourself…the thing you were learning to do since the beginning…LIKE THE fact that it got there from the arr wol is so crazy 2 me. our little guys gained meaning and purpose just by scuttling around and meeting people

“If only your dear son was as ardent with his knightly training as he is with his idle tinkering…”
very happy to see more people find my ffxiv lore insanity posts because this means my ishgardian analysis thesis post has an audience and i can talk about the importance of the firmament questline because it involves house durendaire (powerhouse of ishgard under the holy see's influence, enforcing their doctrine thru a constant output of dragoons, which are the literal symbol of the dragonsong war and everything ishgard stands for) and house haillenarte (struggling family accused of being heretics, literally creating a job that ERASES the importance and dependance on dragoons thru the machinist guild)
like. when i say house haillenarte is queercoded its not because stephanivien has cunty green mascara and looks like a lesbian i'd find at the bar. its because every fucking haillenarte child thats alive is, unconsciously, one massive fuck you to the church and everything they aim to impose on the people thru ideals of knighthood and glory. i havent gotten that far into machinist yet, but stephanivien is actively (though i cant say if he does it consciously) giving the common folk the means to fight back. which highlights how dragoons are a privileged position for nobility (order of the knights dragoon states theyve only RECENTLY gotten lowborns to join bc dragoons are dying faster than they can be trained) and/or those in vulnerable positions whose trauma and pain are exploited for profit (estinien. just. estinien as a whole) stephanivien is out there creating weapons and gear and jobs that will erase everything that dragoons stand for
laniaitte is possibly the only responsible level headed and competent one, the closest thing to a knight they have and shes stuck in the one camp that is furthest away from dragons. which could also hint towards the sexist ideas that ishgard holds even if implicitly. bc they put their only fucking daughter, who is clearly equipped to do more than stand around, in the one place where shes supposed to stand around. i dont fucking know what aurvael does but it speaks volumes that his most important contribution is to help the firmament gather resources for ishgard
and then francel. god. francel. runt of the litter youngest child kidnapped at 11 years old. accused of heresy bc his family flopped at protecting two vigils. but also best friends with another out of place man who is a bastard child. francel, who sucks at everything that his country tells him to aspire for. francel, who symbolizes ishgard's reform and hope of change in the firmament quests
house haillenarte hurts me because ofc they struggle under the holy see's doctrine. ofc they flourish once the country is allowed to heal and grow. ofc the only son that ever became a proper ishgardian knight in their father's eyes is the only one that died and i cant even spell his name bc all theres left of him is one or two quests of laniaitte mourning him. it started with a c. chloroform. columbo.

i feel like a lot of people see it as a flaw in storytelling when an actor's personality bleeds into or eclipses the typical characterization of their character but personally i think one of the funniest things abt taako adventurezone is that he is sometimes temporarily possessed by a deeply socially anxious nearing middle aged suburban father . its a core component of the character that i feel cannot be ignored
the irredeemable pervert is generally well regarded among their friends for their insightful thoughts and all around pleasant demeanour
Wick's occasional outbursts of anger are such an underrated aspect of his characterization. Beyond just being something refreshingly different from his usual sweet/sad/scared trinity, I think it shows A LOT about the environment he was raised in.
Wick is a patient man, he only actually breaks down into anger when he's already been pushed to his limit with stress. His grandmother refusing his pleas to spare Thjazi and Tyranny continually ignoring him, his first time on death's door, being insulted (and even punched) constantly by his allies, etc. And when he snaps it only directed at the cause of his frustration (Tyranny disobeying him, Thaisha killing one of the luxes in a spur of the moment, Julien punching him). And when he doesn't have someone in particular to snap at, he just simmers in self-resentment.
When he does lose his temper, it reflects on Yanessa in a couple interesting ways. For one, it honestly makes him resemble Yanessa's aggression a lot. It's quick, it's loud, and it's mean.
But moreso it reflects the effect growing up around her anger had on him and his ability to stand up for himself. He may have been his family's favorite child, but his reaction to Yanessa's outburst in episode 3 reads to me as someone who is used to seeing it and being cowed into submission by it, or seeing others be cowed by it.
It explains a lot about Wick, despite sometimes having misplaced confidence, being so hesitant to actually stand up for himself until his stress boils over into rage and he can't stop himself. Then he usually feels the need to apologize immediately afterword. Being in that environment trained him to be obedient and passive, even in the face of anger and insults.
He never learned to stand up for himself normally, so now he just lets his stress build up continuously until it boils over into aggression.
Angry Wick you'll always be famous I love you.

"In order to know your enemy, you must become your enemy."
i dont think estinien is stupid. I think his thought processes need to be studied under a microscope though
